LIVE: Chancellor Rachel Reeves To Set Out Her Plan for growth in Big First Speech | UK News | UK General Election | CNBC TV18
Britain's new finance minister, Rachel Reeves, will set out her plan for growth in a speech on Monday that is expected to be attended by some business leaders.
Rachel Reeves will vow to end the blocking of housing development and major infrastructure projects today - with parts of the green belt targeted for building.
In her first major speech, the Chancellor will put her faith in a dramatic overhaul of the planning system to boost economic growth.
Before MPs break for the summer, councils will be issued with mandatory targets to clear the way for hundreds of thousands of new homes. And ministers will begin work on controversial plans to weaken protections for some parts of the green belt to make room for development.
Ministers are also looking to relax planning rules for major infrastructure projects, such as the installation of hundreds of miles of new electricity pylons needed to link up wind and solar farms to the grid.
Starmer has appointed a record 11 women to his cabinet, including Rachel Reeves who became the first female chancellor, Shabana Mahmood as justice secretary, and Yvette Cooper as home secretary.
"The work of change begins immediately," Starmer said in his maiden speech outside Downing Street, pledging that his would be a "government of service".
Pat McFadden, who was named chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, confirmed that the cabinet would meet on Saturday - which is also when the final constituency is set for a recount.
Britain’s Labour Party seemed poised for a landslide victory in Friday's parliamentary election, as indicated by an exit poll released after voting ended at 10 pm (UK local time) on Thursday. The poll, released just after voting ended, suggested that centre-left Labour leader Keir Starmer would be the next prime minister.
Keir Starmer cabinet List
Angela Rayner: Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities; Deputy prime minister
Rachel Reeves: Chancellor of the Exchequer
Pat McFadden: Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
David Lammy: Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs
Yvette Cooper: Secretary of State for the Home Department
John Healey: Secretary of State for Defence
Shabana Mahmood: Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice
Labour leader Keir Starmer declared the country is ready for change as he addressed his own constituency of Holborn and St Pancras in London. In a brief speech, Starmer stopped short of declaring victory as prime minister, but said the country had voted for change. After his speech, Starmer shook hands with his local opponents including Nick the Incredible Flying Brick of the Monster Raving Loony Party and Bobby “Elmo” Smith, who came dressed in an Elmo costume.
