Great explanation ... but information overload, so many useful tips. The key lesson here is: you don’t need a lot of gear, but they need to be flexible and you need to know each piece deeply.

A lot of people wondering why the DAW shade..? For me it has to do with computer meltdowns. Too many times I have been performing with my computer and run into some computer related tech glitch that completely took me out of the vibe, or out of the mix entirely. Hardware has been far more reliable. Plus there is a tactile satisfaction to it. Same reason people don't typically just use their computer keyboards but instead opt for midi controllers. It quite literally FEELS good to create on a dedicated sampler or other piece of hardware by comparison with creating exclusively in a DAW. A lot of people also appreciate the limitations hardware presents, forcing you to be creative within the bounds of the gear. This can be a lot of fun, especially when you get to know the gear and start hearing what everyone else is doing with it! Sometimes if I'm producing just within Ableton it can feel a bit too open ended and rather stale to try and start a new jam.

Awesome vid! Great way to get some ideas for a live setup. I got into synths and making electronic music only about a year ago, and coming from a Rock / Hardcore Punk background getting a setup like this working for a live set still feels alien to me. It’s an inspiring journey though. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! 🙌🏽

This is awesome. Already subscribed, and I probably need to delve deeper into your channel, but it’d be cool to see your whole process-creative, technical, booking gigs, packing-up to go to a gig, setting up at a gig, performing at a gig, getting paid for a gig, packing-up from a gig, resetting back at the crib-that’s all😆😆 that’s a lot, but I’d Patreon the hell out of that👍🏽

@Avalon Bassline Problem. Sometimes machines had problems with "fake"-NOTE-OFF messages. Many controllers send NOTE-ON message with velocity = 0 instead of a real NOTE-OFF message. (for example-AKAI MPC 1000) This causes problems to some units. To map/transform MIDI correctly, i use a "midi solutions - eventprocessor (plus)" Maybe it's worth a try.

@@jumpkickinfernospeedcuber6999 Do you guys know of any courses or videos where people actually step-by-step explain various techniques a lot of people use to perform live in setups like this? I love messing around but I have a very difficult time getting much variety or musical completeness. My setup is: Novation Circuit, Korg Volca Modular + FM + Sample + Mix, Minilogue, Behringer Neutron + Arturia Keystep, Casio CZ-101 (which I can't figure out how to program), and Korg Wavestation (ditto), a Boss PH-3 Phaser pedal, Korg Monotron Delay (ports are iffy so can't use it as a delay fx unit anymore), and Behringer Xenyx 1202FX mixer. So I know I have what I need, but I guess I lack any decent keyboard playing skill or a box with deep sequencing and FX capabilities like the Octatrack. And the built-in sequencer for the Minilogue is not good for live performance (can't switch patterns seamlessly). I guess I just need someone to guide me in the right direction when it comes to editing electronic music gear on the fly.

Ya the Circuits' scales does come in handy with midi. I recently picked up a FH-1 for my modular and tried it out with my Octatrack. It was alright. I then dug up my Circuit and MAN I am surprised how easier and better it is to make actual music from my modular. I think the Octa and Digi are not true Chromatic but actually pitch.

Hey Ricky, do you know of any other dawless musicians out here besides yourself? It's ashame that you and dawless jammer are the only one's that I can find on youtube that do not use a computer. It really blows my mind because everybody uses a computer, and I here a ton of people complaining about not wanting or liking to use a laptop or computer. I'm one of those people, but I know that I can make some really nice stuff without one, and just thinking about using one makes me feel some kind of way. Anyway, if you do know anyone else that goes dawless, to maybe help guide me a little bit on how to get set up completely and know the ins and outs, I'd appreciate it. Thanks brother. Enrique Martinez one question where do you have the midi Going from and to the circuit, I ask because I have the bs2 and circuit, been playing with the ext in filter and using the bs2 as midi controller to setup my patterns, then playing synth1 back through bs2.
@RickyTinez
@RickyTinez 6 лет назад
Jason Thorpe nice! That’s another setup I love using. In this setup I have Clock from Digitakt going to Circuit’s midi input (No notes just clock). Then I have Circuit’s midi Output going to the Avalon Bassline. Just so I can use Circuits ‘scale mode’ to enter in the bass notes on the Avalons sequencer.

Sadly the video is not all that noob-friendly. You named the modules, but I knew nothing about them, so did not know what they were. I would have enjoyed it more if you had played each module solo, so I could see what it did. Once you showed each one, then playing them all together would have been fabulous. Are they all sequencing? Where are the sounds created? Do all the modules have internal sound-oscillators? But it needs to be said, the music was absolutely wonderful and I was dancing along with it in my head. I will definitely subscribe, to listen to more of that and see if your other videos are more instructional. Thank you.

Ricky how does the lack of overbridge support not drive you stark raving mad? I love the octatrack but not being able to multitrack in almost 2022 is insane and theres no excuse so I sold t. In order to have a complete dawless with some more channel without buying lots more stuff the octatrack wasnta great pic. If i didnt like the 'quirk's of the octrack, what would you recomend forthe brain of my setup? Deluge or MPC LIve Two or something else? I hate memorizing combos of buttons and i LIke things laid out intuituitively. Sorry I know this is a a tall order but you're one of the few good unbiased hardware youtbue channels and I appreciate ya homie. Keep up all the good work. I have a nice modest and mature 7k modular rag, a 303 clone and the new drum machine from erica synths. That should do it with thesampler/sequencer/etc right? My moular has an instruo cs l,an antlantis, lots oof juuicy filtersa modulation etc, im good to go in that regard.
@MrKjDrake
@MrKjDrake 6 лет назад
Good work. But there is nothing wrong with using a DAW live (as long as you don’t solely rely on it). Any beat or synth you’ve preprogrammed for live use is nothing different than using a DAW that has preprogrammed arrangements. “Song” mode on Elektron and Circuit would be a perfect example of NOT creating live. So unless you start all your machines with a blank slate and create live as you go then a DAW is basically what you’re still using just in a different format. But then again you can start with a blank slate in Bitwig or Ableton, etc... and create a live performance from scratch as well. At the end of the day it’s apples and oranges. Some people hate working in the box. I used to be one of them, hence my collection of hardware synths and samplers. But the power of manipulation within the box with some awesome VSTs is incomparable to any hardware setup. I like to rant. Just make music however it works best for you. No more DAW bashing. Haha.
@RickyTinez
@RickyTinez 6 лет назад
Completely agree, It's all about the process and how others have fun making music. It is nice learning a machine though and improvising on the spot!
@gossamyr
@gossamyr 6 лет назад
I disagree with 'incomparable', IMO it's the other way 'round, vst's can fake things from the hardware world. Stack enough fake, yeah, pretty...uh, complicated. But live, no one wants to watch someone use a mouse, that's an aspect of the daw hate you are inferring, the other half is latency. For me the box is a toy, if I stumble on something worthwhile it gets done on a dedicated piece of hardware. The box is not a holy place, and I will voice otherwise to anyone who even hints at suggesting the idea. There is also the 'oOooh pretty' gui ignorance, albeit more inline with the younger set. To think this flashy pirated expensive vst is the chet, and not realize it's a clone of an analog synth that just added fm. The kid never realizes the fm aspect is routable, never learning more than how switch patches, thus from a standpoint of musicianship...doesn't stand the test of time, and he or she will have to get a real job someday. All of you daw happy people have shot yourself in the face, every vst costs 10-100 times what it should. They're bloody aps, 2.99 tops, 4.99 if its stellar. anything more and it's bloody robbery, but you all fed it, now look at it, lmao...
@MrKjDrake
@MrKjDrake 6 лет назад
Gossamyr Thorne I get where you’re coming from but there are VSTs that will perform just fine with zero latency. And I think most (besides DeadMouse) use a dedicated keyboard 🎹 instead of a mouse. I think JunkieXL uses his hardware integrated with Cubase and VSTs perfectly. Build up sample libraries of your hardware and then tweak them some more through the magic of the “toy box”. Lol Now for your “price” comment. I agree. 90% of the VSTs out there are overpriced. Only a few deserve the $150+ price point and those are things like Omnisphere. I actually enjoy using HELM which is a free VST and does a wonderful job compared to some pricey softsynths. And Audulus can compete with a wall of modular if you know your shit and can use your brain.
@gossamyr
@gossamyr 6 лет назад
Not that it can't be done, exceptions being what they are, most don't use their brain. Sad fact along any 'thing' people get into. Accessibility and uncreative people are the recipe that can and have killed genres, due to copycat oversaturation. Instead of pushing innovation, it's just copying a popular track, and flooding a genre so it 'all sounds the same' and people walk away(minimal, trap, etc). The record companies are just as bloody guilty, only pushing things that follow 'what worked'. We as music creators kind of have a responsibility, and those of a lesser stripe are hurting us, whatever the mechanism. So, I think that's my point. I want more thinkers, and I say this realizing the biology of primates, that they(we) learn predominately thru emulation. Take a jazz class. All you learn is how people in the 20's-40's innovated. There will be a little theory, but most of it is more of a history of jazz. Now just for a moment jump back into that time, how much did they emulate? I think some of it might actually be inline with dragon force pulling in a mario bros synth line, and bending/speeding it up, which is funny. They did that too, they used popular songs and bent them which lead to other aspects. Now the secret. Pick any song with a cool hook that you dig. Plenty of vids out there how to learn it. Once you do you realize it's just a handful of notes. Not that hard, right? So the question, what the hell makes it cool. The secret is putting your being into those notes, the expression. It's something you can hear. Think. Innovate. Express. for god's sake... ps, no disrespect to the original commenter, just engaging in conversation. :)

man, I love your videos, going through them constantly and hey! kudos on the work, really. So, now that you've taken your modular bassline to most of your shows, how do you keep that one in scale with the rest of the song and whatnot. Been really cracking my head around that one. Anways, congrats on the content and thank you for sharing :)

Thanks for saying "Dawless Forever". Some youtubers have been trying to insult the idea of making music the way I do.

I'd say jealousy might be a factor, most wannabe producers that produce exclusively in the box and have never used real hardware are out of there element and wouldn't know were to begin. using hardware in a live context and making it mesh without hiccups isn't as easy that one would think.

There's no one way to make music. As long as the end result works for whoever is making the music then all good.

The classic "Just do it in Ableton in 2 seconds" but that's not the point. It's how we have fun making music that counts.

That's because some youtubers are looking for reasons to be insulting. There are many ways to make music and each comes with its specialities and its limitations. Obviously you'll never get all the super tight tricks you can program into a DAW, but just playing back canned music doesn't allow the in the moment finesse of live manipulation.

Great video! I am just getting into the OT and it is pretty confusing. This was super helpful. Can you do a follow up or what not where you talk about routing in the OT? What machines do you use on each of the 8 tracks, and the one thing I was really hoping more info on was track 8 and your crossfader setup. How do you use it as a master? Is everything routed to that?

Thanks Enrique! I didn't think about using the cue track, I'm going to see what happens if I feed the cue signal to the op1 as external effect and back into the octatrack ;)
