Benack III, trumpet & vocals, Russell Hall bass & vocals *Emmet, Russell, Bruce, and Benny:* When we think it’s impossible to love you cats any more, you *give us an historic evening,* unlike the many we’ve adored. *John Birks Gillespie* lives in the *musicianship, joy, & unity of spirit* that you dropped on our jazz family Monday night. *Bruce Harris* - your *scholarship, resonance, and Diz-like charm* connect us to the trumpet master in a way that ever-unites the ‘cool’ with the ‘craft.’ *Benny Benack, III* - your *lyricism, language, & swag breathe life into Gillespie’s legacy* and the hip sanctity of the trumpeter-vocalist tradition. *Russell Hall* - you kept this entire train moving, as the badass bassist you are. *Celebrating Dizzy’s bop brilliance, wouldn’t be possible without your scathing rhythm, scatting, & skill.* *Emmet Cohen* - *there’s not a time signature you can’t conquer nor an atmosphere you can’t create…* Dizzy is inimitable…but so is your vision for this music. It is your brotherhood & commitment that makes his spirit accessible to us all. 🙌🏽 *We love you cats - and Happy Birthday, Diz…the one and only 🌎🎺*
…so *grateful* for this music & each one of you:..jazz devotees are the coolest brand of souls in this life. @Graham, anything to keep our jazz family connected is golden with me…anything less is off-time jive, man 😂…thank you ;) @Etta, lovely, - No Salt-Peanuts but Bruce & Benny did such a *righteous* job with Umbrella Man & Pretty-Eyed Baby… how fortunate are we that Dizzy’s body of work can be shared with us, at this level 🙌🏽 and the original is a *treasure:* m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZO1uMjz3n3w.html
The coupling of two trumpet men who are true boppers is perfect . Although both of these guys are NYC based , this is the first time that I’ve heard them together . Thanks !
Beautiful trumpet harmony and Bruce and Benny outdid themselves in their solos. Russell holding down the fort brilliantly and Emmet is his usual fantastic.
This bruce harris and benny benack III duo is just insane. This rendition is definitely better than their previous dizzy celebration with patrick bartley.
Brings back to me all my years of BeBop listening - and especially the three nights I spent with Diz back stage. It was just him and his girlfriend Ingrid from Brazilia and me having a ball during each break. We were in good mood and more than that. Diz had all this good humor, that has become rare anywhere. After the master had left I took over the girl: but unfortunately our romance did not last very long. I could not keep up that level of natural fun all by myself. I guess I am more of a team player. Olden days, golden days - days of mad romance and love and all of that. Dizzy was just great all the way. God bless his soul!
I switched feom the sax to the trumpet and I don't regret It , I love brass instruments , this video Is so cool both trumpeters are extremely proficient and they play differently and I like this fact , I can't go Watch live gigs bevause I chose not to be vaccinated but these live gigs are wonderful
great tribute to the Diz man. I do believe it's pronounced, sha-RAW'. Not certain but i do live about an hour's drive and have been there many times. My favorite, well, one of my favorites; I Can't Get Started. has anybody heard the Bunny Berrigan version? Original big hit.
