Gautam Gambhir's tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team is set to commence with a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, starting on Saturday (July 27). Rahul Dravid stepped down from the coaching role following the T20 World Cup victory, and the BCCI has appointed Gambhir as his successor to lead Indian cricket into its next chapter.
India will also have a new T20I skipper in Suryakumar Yadav who is set to replace his Mumbai statemate Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20Is after the T20 World Cup win.
Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain in the T20 World Cup, was the front-runner to lead the Men in Blue in the shortest format of the game but owning to his fitness challenges, chief selector Ajit Agarkar gave the role to Suryakumar Yadav.
This series will give youngsters a chance to cement themselves in the top-order in the absence of Virat Kohli, who also retired from the shortest format after winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados.
