Hi guys, thanks for having me be a part of this! One correction, Alain and Chris played the guitars on Euphoria Morning which came out.. in 2000 or 2001. I wasn’t in the picture til 2007! :) I did record with Chris, and of course toured but all those killer guitars/tones/parts on Euphoria, many of which I learned for tour, were Alain and Chris. Rock on dudes! 🤟

After a long week at his dental practice, Rhett likes to bring this ‘small travel version’ of his board to worship band practice.

Colin's board rates Pegasus Llama. You guys should be rating in Cheese Balls. It's food and episode relevant. RJ's board is what Neil Peart would have used if he played guitar.

Rhett's rig is the guy at the gym who wants to be seen working out and always glances at the mirror when he walks by hahaha! Great stream.

Be careful wearing a Sweetwater T-shirt and any jacket or cardigan over the top. ‘Swee’ and ‘er’ can be covered up too easily.

The "happy kid's smile" on Josh face when he's trying to sound metal is my favourite moment here.

Absolutely agree on talking heads. Stop making sense show has some amazing rhythm. Even that acoustic psycho killer opener with just David Byrne. And then countless live shows from the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir.. especially the entire decade of the 70s. Insanely good. The whole band's rhythm section is firing in 77-78, go back to 1972-1974 for very unique rhythm work paired with Jerry Garcia's lead. It's incredible. I'll also throw in Hunter Brown from STS9.. his live use of the wah pedal is the pure funk. He took inspiration from the early James Brown vibe and then totally turned it on its head. He stole it and now owns it! For those sounds I would check out live shows from 2005-2007. Not that the other years aren't good, but a good starting place.

Colin Scott is the man. He's awesome at explaining the science behind gear in an engaging and truly interesting way. Also dig his goofy humor

Bummed I missed this live! When I saw R.J. Ronquillo on the pedal board I got super excited!

I know it's old-school, but I love John Fogerty's rhythm playing in Creedence Clearwater Revival and later. He is so in the pocket and sometimes the rhythm is so good that for the 2nd guitar solo he just plays a rhythm part (Down On the Corner).

On a non-guitar pedal related note, Nick's snare is sounding particularly sweet in this video - nice and warm!

It’s hard to be scathing on anyone’s board. I guess you could give Rhett the Felix Unger award for annoyingly tidy :) great stuff all around

Pedal rating system (uncool to cool) Higher the number the more uncool you are 1. Knob rating - is proportional to the average knobs per pedal - High number means you’re a knob (uncool) 2. Snob rating - Is proportional to the average cost per pedal - High is uncool - original Klon would rate a 10 (uncool) 3. Boring rating - unique sounding pedals are required to achieve a low rating or a unique pedal combination or weird signal chain structure eg Miku has low rating, as does stacking 6 flangers etc 4. Clone Rating - Use of original pedals scores high, use of clones or cheap pedals that sound close are much cooler. If they are plastic that’s insanely cool. PS If you paid someone to build your board you need to take a good hard look a yourself, that money could have made hundreds of buskers happy especially as you didn’t give me your old board. Uncool as Brett Boils

I missed the live because of stupid work, but my scathing review of Rhett's board would have been, "It's not a pedalboard; it's a product placement for Strymon."

Lab Series amps are very kewl! It was integral to Ty Tabor’s tone for several King’s X albums. He now lives in KC. There should be an episode with Ty! A pedal collab would be awesome too!

My favorite rhythm guitarist is my all around favorite player: Steve Cropper of Booker T. and the MGs. Grooves for miles.

Back in the earliest 80s, when i was but a yute, i read a biography about Jimi Hendrix. In it was an account of an episode where Jimi's 'man bits' were being cast in plaster for some purpose i cannot recall. But, i do specifically remember that they referred to his... parts... as his "rig." So, whenever anyone now says they wanna 'get a look at some dude's "rig,"' i kinda giggle a bit, on the inside. *"He does something cool with his rig."* - That's what _she_ said / Addison

Best Rhythm Guitarist: Pete Townshend comes to mind because his rhythm playing is exceptional and he doesnt do much lead at all. Whereas, Hendrix, John Mayer, Jimmy Page, etc are fantastic rhythm players but they are also known for their lead playing.

What I love about Ronquillo’s pedalboard is the fact that he has two and still need to put one more pedal on the floor. This is 2N+1!

I thought RJ said his new pedalboard he did with Mason was gonna be permanent. That was obviously crazy talk for a pedal lover. I think 1 week is the longest I've gone without swapping something.

RJ wins! Definitely fun just to look at. You guys didn’t even mention his Amplified Nation Steel String Sultan. Five Guys < InNOut. Can’t believe people are still so naive in a the world we live in. Pete is cool and his pragmatism is why I subscribe to him.

You know what would be worth the price of admission? Music is Win trying to pick a Centaur out of all the clones that Josh has.

I think RJ does the best guitar demos in the business...

One thing that kind of annoys me about videos with the Boss Heavy metal is that no-one ever mentions Swervedriver and My Bloody Valentine, both renowned for it being part of their core sounds. The heavy metal genre connection has been done to death (pun intended - see what I did there?) and I just wish someone would sidestep the tropes and show how this pedal can be amazing as a part of a heavy alt-indie thing, I won't say shoegaze cos I'm not sure Swervedriver are shoegaze, if they are, they're on the really super-duper heavy side and if you don't know them, they have the most amazing albums ever (Raise 1991, Mezcal Head 1993, I Wasn't Born to Lose You 2015 and a few others but they're my faves) but you have to acknowledge the power of the influence of MBV and it is a common misconception it's all about Kevin Shields and reverse reverb into fuzz, there's a second guitarist BILINDA BUTCHER and her two distortions are the Boss Heavy Metal and a Marshall ShredMaster. please check this out, it's a hugely important part of music history, and pushed people like me to get into pedals in the late 80s and early 90s.

If the phrase "mud butt" was a pedal board it would be Rhetts. Beato was whipping him with that string right before that picture was taken.

I know it’s too late, but Rhett, your rig is the musings of an indie musician wannabe with the erroneous envy of a worship guitar player’s pedalboard. Add a dash of high-brow Strymon fanboy-ism.

A really good example of rhythm and lead guitarists are Nick and Albert from the Strokes, they alternate roles a lot, and show good examples of polyphonics where one plays higher notes and lower notes that compliment

East Bay Ray from Dead Kennedys used a Heavy Metal pedal (and an old tape echo). I jammed with him in 1986 when he was trying to start another band when DKs were falling apart the first time. I though it was pretty fun that the key to one of the biggest punk rock bands guitar player used a Heavy Metal pedal. Must have not been on all their albums though because the pedal came out in 1983 and a lot of their best albums were behind them. It sounded just like his playing on the DK albums in my living room live though.
