To me, this song is a perfect encapsulation of how one person has a tragedy in life while another person can have a triumph. And, how when neither of them are aware of the other. It shows how life is so precious and how you should live each moment the best you can.
Most favorite Live song of all time (and there are so many good ones). She needs to do I Alone. Interesting tidbit I heard on the radio last week. Live and STP (not sure who's going to be singing) are teaming up for a tour this year! I've only seen STP once before, but I've seen Live half a dozen times, and they never disappoint.
This entire album (Throwing Copper) was huge in 1994. It is a masterpiece from front to back, no filler. Certified 8 × platinum. There were 4 or 5 top 20 hit singles off of it, iirc.
You beat me to it. Throwing Copper album was on repeat for me as I entered high school. One of my top 5 albums all time. It’s a little funny she has mentioned multiple times it feels early 2000s like. Live was cool before it was cool😂
Mental Jewelry is soooo much better though for a CD. I know just an opinion but I can't think of one bad track on Mental and it's flow just dictates ya play it cover to cover while driving through the Midwest with the windows down.
This was from 1994... Live (the band) were part of the 90's grunge rock scene, even though they were from Pennsylvania (not Seattle, Washington) formed in the 80's by Ed Kowalczyk (vocals & guitar), Chad Taylor (guitar), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass) and Chad Gracey (drums) ... the band was signed in the early 90's after changing the name to Live and debuted in 1992 w/ the album 'Mental jewelry'... they had a minor hit on MTV - 'Operation spirit'... The album would sell platinum (1 million copies) in the US after Live broke big later on... Live was one of the grunge rock bands that broke big in 1994 after Nirvana's demise... Their 2nd album 'Throwing copper' became a #1 hit and sold 8 million copies in the US and a huge success internationally... w/ the hits - 'Selling the drama' ... 'I alone' ... 'Iris' ... 'Lightning crashes'... etc. Live went for a different sound on their 3rd album 'Secret Samadhi' in 1997 attempting to get away from 90's grunge rock... a modern rock sound and hit singles - "Lakini's juice" ... 'Freaks' ... 'Turn my head'... pushed sales to 2x platinum and debuted at #1 on the charts. However, the end of the 90's brought in new trends away from 90's 'alternative' rock... Live released 'The distance to here' in 1999 and it sold platinum w/ the single - "The Dolphin's cry"... but the band was in commercial decline... In the aftermath of 9/11 attacks, Live had a minor hit 'Overcome'... from the 2001 album 'V'. Live carried on making records and touring before a split w/ mainman Ed Kowalczyk in 2011... Live released 1 album ('The Turn' in 2014) w/ singer Chris Shinn... but soon opted to reunite w/ Ed Kowalczyk. The situation got worse as no new music was produced... By 2022, Ed Kowalczyk fired guitarist Chad Taylor... Gracey and Dahlheimer also quit and Kowalczyk announced that he would put a new Live line-up to tour as legal actions were being taken by past members.
This song always makes me cry. In 95 an express commuter train going 70ish hit a bus from from my hs school, killing 7 and injuring in excess of 25. I lost three friends that day. A major chicago morning radio host dedicated this song to my town and school as the news broke of the accident around the world
I hate that this happened, and hope you and all the people who lost someone are doing well. I know it's been a long time, but some things never leave you.
I remember that. I'm from Texas and that was my first year in a new school. 7th grade in a Christian Academy. We held a prayer vigil in our bus yard and canceled classes for the day.
Lightning Crashes by Live, One Headlight by the Wallflowers, and Freshman by Verve Pipe, and you have all of the Jaded Soul of the 90's. Then you hear Sellout by Reel Big Fish and realize 90's music was an amazing rollercoaster
White, Discussion is one of the best and most underrated songs of the 90s. Saw them in Austin, TX in 95. epic road trip. got a tattoo. had to beg for gas money home. almost went to jail.
The video was actually meant to show a hospital-like setting, with a death here and a birth there. It's not meant to be about death in childbirth. The video was dedicated to a childhood friend of the singer, who was killed by a drunk driver.
These guys are one of THE all-time true UNDERRATED alt rock bands of the 90s and early 00s, producing some true BANGERS that us more discerning rock fans really treasure. This whole album, Throwing Copper, is a genuine masterpiece - also DEFINITELY check out I Alone, Selling the Drama, Dillar of Davidson and White, Discussion from it - as were their next two albums, Secret Samedi - see Freaks, Ghost, Lakini's Juice, Gas Hed Goes West and Rattlesnake - and The Distance From Here - see sort-of-title track The Distance (my personal favourite Live track), Run to the Water, Feel the Quiet River Rage, The Dolphin's Cry, Face and Ghoast (The CHildren's Song) and They Stood Up For Love. There are also similarly AWESOME later songs worth checking out, such as Deep Enough, Overcome, Forever May Not Be Long Enough and Nobody Knows.
You're right about that moment where it gets quieter. I've always noticed the same thing every time I listened to this song, and I assumed it was to allow it to do a build again at the end.
This album came out in the mid-90s. I know it because I was born in 1990 and as a little kid my older sister loved this band. And I mean diehard fan loved them. She played this entire CD and another one of the band's earlier albums constantly on the stereo in the house and in her car.
Was in High School when this came out. As a sophomore my mama passed due to cancer. Then as a senior i had a baby girl who was underdeveloped (skull didn’t form) that passed a couple hours after she was born. I have played this song more times than i can possibly count. Yet it was written because a friend of theirs died in a car wreck and donated his organs and thats why they wrote it. As a junior i had a buddy have an accident with a fire arm and pass to. So i kinda just close my eyes and go back in time and see all 3 of them when i hear this one.
Yes! I love these guys! Not to sound like I'm bragging that I knew them before they were cool, but they became much more well known and mainstream with this song and their 3rd and 4th album, their first album was an indie produced thing that I don't think ever saw the light of day, and I never heard, but I remember buying their second album, "Mental Jewelry" at the same time as the Pearl Jam "Ten" album, when I was 14 years old, and I listened to it much more than I did Pearl Jam. They were very significant to an impressionable young Richie, and that was honestly, one of the most significant albums of my life. By the time this came out, I of course liked it, but I'd kind of already moved on to whatever else I was now in to, but I still occasionally pull out that "Mental Jewelry" album and have to jam out to it.
I showed a friend this song and they listened to it for a week and then passed away. Still love the song, but just always think of her whenever I hear it. She also liked Dolphins Cry
It would be truly magic if Rachel did a full cover of this song since she enjoyed the original one from LIVE Lightning Crashes & Her voice is incredible good. At 7:35 she might be thinking it's like a mirror affect during the song.
One of the Best albums of the entire 90’s by far, and their first album (Mental Jewelry) is my top 5 all time… I am HIGHLY biased but they wrote most of the songs when in High School and my best friends had a band at the same time where they’d all play in Philly clubs (before certain hours as under 21). I’ve seen them like 50 times live and hung out with them many times in our teens. They were so talented. White Discussion from this same album is one of my faves if you want to react.
They never forgot where they were from. Playing the college scene all over Pennsylvania and always seemed to prefer somewhat smaller venues. Went to college in Philly and I went with mates to so many different colleges and fairgrounds to seem them. Shows were always a great time.
This song specifically reminds me of the Murrah Bombing. I was there for more than a month. Clearing the daycare haunts me still. On the radio station 100.5 the KATT THIS SONG was played, I’ll never forget this song
I think the whole holding the baby upside down is what they used to do in the old days. They would hold it upside down and swat their butts to get them to cry so they could start breathing on their own.
This song, and the album, Throwing Copper, actually came out in 94, and was huge for them. This song went to number 1 on numerous charts and the album spawned a few big radio hits that were played for over a decade, and can still occasionally be heard today. Some of those songs are, I Alone, White Discussion, Selling the Drama and All Over You. I'd recommend any of those songs. And their best song in my opinion came from the album that followed this one called The Distance to Here, song called Dolphins Cry. And they've had several other radio hits through the mid 90s to early 2000s.
I have seen these guys in concert 3 or 4 times. They are an awesome band. They are actually playing a concert with Incubus about 5 hours drive from where I am tomorrow night but I can’t make it to see them unfortunately.
I know I’m dating myself, but I caught this band in concert, the night before the start of my senior year of high school. The first week of which was actually hell to be honest, and the rest of the year wasn’t much better. But that show was like one last bright light of the summer, and they closed with this song. I just remember looking around at everyone, because it had become a big singalong. P.S. Nice glimpse of the singing voice.
also, a little fun technical stuff: if you listen to the song with headphones you will hear the rhythm guitar going back and forth between the left and right ear, such a cool effect. not sure though if they kept this in the music video version but it's there on the album version.
When I get upset I play the Dam at Otter Creek. That was my teenage fail default. It's not the best it's not the worst it's The End. One of the times I deeply disappointed my grandfather was when I put throwing copper above the Beatles Sergeant Pepper's. 30 years later I hold firm. It didn't break ground, but it broke my heart.
+Live+ was known for the way they would build and pull back each verse, yet consistently be building towards a peak. White, Discussion is a great example of this.
Released in 1994, so no surprise you are not familiar with the entire song. But, it explains why you thought you have never heard it. Songs like this linger around, get sampled, covered, played incessantly, and spit out again in various forums. It's a classic to some, but modern to me (I.m 52) lol. Nice reaction!
ughh, that brought me back a few! so strange how music, even if you didnt listen to it alot, can take you back to times and feelings you had during that time. this is one of em. good morning miss. have a great day!
LIVE are definitely an underrated band. They have SO MUCH music that ppl will say “oh yeah I know this song” to so many songs but at the same time say “LIVE? I don’t know that band” until they hear some of their music. For us fans they are an awesomely talented band. I r3commend you dig deep into LIVE. You should be amazed. Great reaction
Throwing copper is fantastic! Listened to this album dozens of times in 94, but I really love "Iris" so much more on that album! Side thought: "Is she a Leo?"
I am so glad I found your channel. I love watching your reactions to music videos. This is on Live‘s second album from 1994. I saw them in concert at a small club in Cleveland for that tour, and I still rate it as one of the best shows I have ever seen. Also, you are adorable!!!
I've always wondered why that part of the chorus was lower than the rest of the song. I've always assumed it was a glitch in recording and was left in the final cut.
My favourite live album is Secret samadhi. Less commercial than throwing copper but easily the most darkest and depressing album of the 90s. I recently heard the b side Photography and it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever. They are crazy for leaving it off Secret Samadhi.
He nails it when he sings it live as well. Very talented. I feel like music videos sometimes can take away from recognizing how talented some of these people really are.
04:30 No, love. Live was part of the amazing 90s bands that were active during that day. I honestly can't think of whether we would consider them grunge or not right now because I haven't listened to them in so long but they were popular during the same time soundgarden and Jane's addiction and chili peppers and Grunge was going on. Definitely in the alternative category. You should check out I Alone If you haven't already. As the commenter says below me, every song on the album was a masterpiece. they're really great
Baby was upside down because when babies were born(don't know if they still do this) they would lift it by the feet and get it to cry to have gravity help get any fluids out of the mouth and lungs.
I bought the album the day it came out at the suggestion of a guy working at the local record store and I had a new ‘95 mustang gt convertible…. My friends and I were the coolest kids in town cruising to this and the new nine inch nails album 😎(I was 21)
Am gonna see these folks in-person with Incubus in a couple of weeks, super keeeeeen. Also I was being haunted by the fact that you remind me of someone and I couldn't think of who, but I finally figured it out - Amy Acker! Sometimes the resemblance is uncanny!
THIS SONG WAS MY LATE HUSBAND'S FAVORITE SONG, WE PLAYED THIS SONG FOR HIS MEMORIAL HE WAS ONLY 46 YEARS OLD IT WAS A MASSIVE HEART ATTACK, HE DIED IN MY ARMS 😢 I'M SORRY THIS SONG HITS ME HARD. RIP RAYMOND 😇 ❤️🩹 🌹 I MISS YOU DEARLY. THE NIGHT BEFORE HE DIED WE DANCE TO SAVAGE GARDEN TRULY MADLY DEEPLY AND THE NEXT MORNING HE DIED. THANK YOU RAYACTIONS, AWESOME REACTION!! SORRY, FOR THE SAD STORY AND ALL CAPS, I DON'T SEE TOO WELL!! 😊🩷🤘✌️
A lot of people think from the video that the mother died in childbirth. No, that was an another woman, in the same hospital. The cycle of life and all that.
This song will always be the nineties personified for me. I was 12 when the album came out and I’m so happy that the equally amazing outtake song from it, Hold Me Up (which was featured in a key scene from Zack and Miri Make a Porno) finally made it onto the 25th anniv rerelease of the album. Check that song out too!
Live always had a very existential theme to their lyrics. Their early 90s songs like this one and a lot of the other greats on Throwing Copper ("S**t Town", "Selling the Drama", and "All Over You", etc.) seemed to be more of a theme of 'this is what the world is' and 'this is what I'm going to make of it' and then after Ed Kowalczyk became a father it felt like their lyrics became a lot more hopeful, even spiritual, but they were able to keep their distinctive sound. The "Dolphin's Cry" and "Heaven" were both big hits in the late 90s / early 2000s, the latter is about his becoming a father, and it's almost amazing that song came from the same band as "Lightning Crashes".
This album release tour was my first concert back in the day... Camped out in a geo metro with my sister and her then boyfriend all night to get tickets. The 90s were such a great time for living and music.
I absolutely love this album. Got played to death at so many teen parties, and Lightning Crashes was a regular drunken singalong track. But after learning about its connection to certain horrific acts I struggle to listen to it anymore. If you love this album, just enjoy it, and dont do research on how it was used by others
You should know the song/album, it was huge. 'That section'.....ugh. I'm sorry for the future, it's not our fault... something in the water or the internet....
I bought this cd in 1994 after hearing "Selling the Drama" and basically bounced between it and Pearl Jam "Ten" for several months. I still have the cd and it's still amazing. You really need to check out Selling the Drama, I Alone, and The Dolphins Cry.
