My last pond, I visited a family friend who had a large pond on their property. She literally scooped a 5 gallon bucket full of pond muck and instructed me to dump it in my pond. Well sure enough within the next year my pond became fully vegetated. Tons of native plants started growing and my turtles love it. The water went from pea soup green to clear. Love the vids, keep em up!

That's super super cool!!! Was your pond natural? How big? I'd love one like that some day. Thanks for watching Wayne!

Mine was a pond I built much like yours, but mine didn't look nearly as good haha. It was about a 12x7x7' pond. I dug it far too deep like a n00b. But adding the pond muck really did wonders for it.

Have you tried floating a hula hoop with water hyacinth or duckweed? You could tether them to rocks and keep them away from the falls and skimmers/inlets. They would make a little shade. You need a local pal to hand down some of their extra plants! Best of luck getting that turtle from the cashier.

I usually get my water hyacinths off of Craigslist. They spread so fast lots of people try to get rid of them starting this month of so. Also, as a temporary, cheap and easy, instant cover, you could buy fake lily pads. Tie each one to a string, then tie the string to a rock and you can have them floating wherever you want them. Not the best looking things and they won't last for forever, but it's a quick way to add shade and I've had them last a season. Or, it's kinda crappy looking, but you could probably even do a pool float from the dollar store for now. Even a floating log would offer some shade.

Dan do you fertilize the lilies? Go back to the nursery and inquire if they have a Laguna pond fertilizer spike. It a tube with fertilizer tablet. Just sink it deep into the lily pot and no turtle can’t retrieve it since it will pierce through the soil deep.

Duckweed? I'm pondering about getting some for myself. You can usually find it in wild ponds everywhere

You can make a floating planter by putting the thin swimming noodles around a pot and planting it. There are lots of plant you can buy at Lowe's or walmart that will do good floating in the pond

Having the same issue with my very very new pond--turtles haven't been added yet due to the heat. I went with the obvious Hyacinth and Water Lettuce for floating plants and then, while browsing a local fish store, came across Brazilian Pennywort... usually planted in the gravel at the store (remember, aquatic plants are grown above water (weird) prior to being sold to the pet stores)... anyways, after they've adapted back to life in the water, they float and spread like crazy. Unlike the Hyacinth that are at the mercy of the current, this can be strategically grown from a certain side (anchored at the edge or even at the base of existing vegetation pots) and allowed to float towards the center. While it will die off over the winter, I can always bring some to an indoor aquarium to be ready for next spring. It is kind of a dainty plant and my not hold up to the the wear and tear of your DBTs though. I like Parrot's Feather too for the same reasons (it will come back after the winter).

Can always throw a large/huge log in there... you'll get tannins for a bit but it's a sure fire way to get a great amount of shade and the right piece would look very natural too.

Hi Dan! Been meaning to ask if you went back to your school to get the rest of your critters or how they were doing? The star jasmine is going to make a beautiful shaded spot for your shelled and scaled kids and will smell great too! Good job!

No egyptian papyrus plant?? That WOULD look stunning for your pond. I’m surprised the lilies are not growing? Are the turtles possibly eating/tearing them?

Went to a nursery the other day and found some pond plants (only one around here) for our new RES pond. They had water celery and said it grows super fast. We can't get water lettuce here as its invasive 😒 not sure if you can

love love love a good aquatic plant talk! how do you get ur turts to not eat gravel (im just scared about blockages, iv always used huge rocks) also my fav aquatic plants are hycianth and water lettuce. ol reliables and my turtles love to snack on them throughout the day. i bought some fake lily pads for them to hide under and most dont eat them! (the one that does got her lily pad privileges taken away)
@timher4995
@timher4995 4 года назад
The lilliy pads are under too much sun. Normally the actual pads would cover the roots, but you koi probably ate the leaves, and the roots were exposed.

The life cycle of a pet turtle in 5 steps: 1. Aquire turtle 2. Turtle gets big, messy, expensive, and stays alive for a long time. Briefly consider upgrading. 3. Realise you don't have the money/time/space/patience for this sh*t 3.5. Optional: See if friend will take it. No matter which way that goes... 4: Turtle goes in first pond you/your friend finds. Try to sell tank and filter online to recover your $ 5. Turtle dies. Edit: I'm currently the sucker friend who got stuck with the turtle some dumb PoS human scum picked up for free "for his kid" but never gave it to the kid. Now turtle has outgrown original $400 setup and I'm on Step 2. But since I'm morally/ethically against Step 4, and lil guy deserves better than Step 5, I'm gonna try to upgrade. But I'm also broke as sh*t so...😅

Has a predator ever tried to go through the net? I'm just curious. Or maybe the net makes them unable to see the turtles...

I'd think the koi would be more likely to than the turtles (the turtles are carnivores)
