What a good looking man. I'm falling in love. His eyes should captivate you. They are mischevious! If you could hear me telling you about putting those highlights on the nose, the eyes under the glasses you would laugh...! I'm just a watercolorist. I am so excited watching you! I can't break! You are exciting me! I'm yelling at you! Put light at the hairline, then pull the color inward. Oh, not Woody Allan, Richard Gere! Look at the eyes! OMG, this is so different than watercolor portrait painting! Thank you so much for so much excitement!! And enjoyment!

This process is very encouraging for me. I’m so intimidated w colors and seeing you put all kinds of colors and working them to form this portrait is really inspiring. The idea of not being hard on yourself is truly appreciated.

I'm so glad the approach speaks to you! We can have fun while we see adjustments needed and make sculptural changes to the work, it's a joyful adventure. Keep painting!

This is so helpful. I’ve been such a perfectionist for so long and it’s slowed me down and often halted me all together. Surprisingly getting a job as a paint and sip instructor just to pay some bills has had the biggest impact of slowly chipping away at those tendencies. I didn’t think it would be very creative because I have to paint the franchises pre-selected designs for the most part. However, occasionally there have been partner and pet painting events that have really allowed me to encourage the guests to loosen up and have fun because that’s the purpose of those experiences. As opposed to an actual workshop or expecting a one-off 3 hour session magically transform them into masters or even novices because some come not even knowing how to hold a paint brush (not that there’s a right or wrong way to do it but that can be intimidating). It’s prying the perfectionist layers off myself because I’m so encouraging and kind to the guests. I’m coming up with silver linings or stress free problem solving, either figuring out how to change the marks or colours or telling a story as to why it’s there. At the very least coming with a way to make them giggle about it. Speaking to them that way is influencing and changing my internal dialogue as well. There’s limited time and my attention is divided between providing instructions and examples, and walking around attending to individual requests for feedback or encouragement. My job is to do a good enough job painting my example to suggest I have the required skills. Thus, attendees feel confident in my advice. It’s not to show off or paint a masterpiece in front of them, there’s an element of performance to it but that’s not the whole picture. Now my personal pieces, outside of that job are getting more loose and expressive and I’m becoming so much more confident and less critical. These are much more pleasant conditions to create under and it’s definitely reducing the Dysphoria over my work and inviting me to keep coming back to the canvas or pastelmat more frequently. Your video has strengthened those messages for me and strengthened my enthusiasm. Thanks 🙏

So good. I still need to develop my confidence to draw freehand like that. I still get caught up with details and painting loosely is something that eludes me.

Hi Alain, I discovered your channel about a year ago and every time I watch you work I can’t help but notice how effortlessly it looks when you perform in the drawing stage. Your color theory also appears to be quite accurate. To be completely honest with I’ve come a long way since I first started out and I believe I make pretty good drawings. I’ve even moved up from colored pencils to pastels after looking at your portraits and some others. I started out creating dog portraits and now I’ve done a few people portraits. I believe that one of my biggest weaknesses is perfectionism. Even if I believe a distance is correct I’ll measure it anyways. I do this until the drawing is done. It turns out looking real accurate. Do you think I’m curable. I want to draw the whole picture without a ruler and feel satisfied that I’ve accomplished this obstacle. Do you think I need the portrait week, your class or both?
@AlainPicard
@AlainPicard 7 месяцев назад
Learning to measure and sketch and paint at the same time was a process for me and I can absolutely help you get there. Measuring is not bad, its good, but doing it while you work, and developing the work with flexibility and freshness, this is an exciting growth. Please join me for Portrait Week, I would love to encourage you!
