I recently had double jaw surgery breaking my jaws to put them in the correct position, and everything was put back together with custom titanium plates and screws. Recovery is a long road, and I've used my time resting to catch up on all the Pen Casts (I have seen them all). I love this show. I kept laughing at all the silliness, but it hurt to laugh. 😂 Worth it! My girlfriend and I who both love fountain pens were able to go to the DC show on Saturday, but we didn’t see any GPC staff. I worked with Ian Schon to create a truly custom purple titanium pen to commemorate my surgery and buy it at the show. The pen means so much to me. The fountain pen community is truly amazing. Thank you for what you do and helping people through good times and bad.
Brian's bouillon story reminded me of the time I was a kid looking through my parents' Tupperware bins of baking supplies. I found one just labeled "SODA". I thought "oh cool, this must be what they make 7Up out of!" so I put a whole spoonful in my mouth. And that's the day I learned what baking soda is.
It was so fun to be there, thank you so much for doing this! I was cracking up. I know I don’t always comment, but i watch every week. Thank you for doing what you do! You bring joy to the world. 🌎
@@Gouletpens aww! Yeah, I was there. It was so fun. I didn't have time to see you - it was actually my birthday 🫣 and my daughter (7) and husband came with me that weekend and Amelia was pretty burnt out ha. We had gone to OTAKON on Saturday, too. I almost had her wait with me but maybe next year. We had a couple hour drive home so we just got out of dodge. It was so fun to be there though. It was a great birthday coincidence!! I think it's funny - my husband saw you both in passing through the weekend and recognized you from the pencast lol. You're a household name!
Being able to pull off a live show like this while looking entirely comfortable (except when the tool pen comes up!) is a credit to you both. Fun show!
Great Pencast!! You both were ON FIRE and so lively! I so hope to get to the DC pen show some day. For now though, I'm planning on going to the LA pen show in February 2025. I hope one of you will be able to attend that show.
❤❤❤ Seeing ya'll live was great! Excited to listen to the audio as my dog & I head out on our (rainy) Friday run. And definitely looking forward to playing with all my pen show goodies once we get back 😁😁
Fun! I do wish we could have seen the phone camera footage. I also think a second camera on the audience to capture and show those moments when you guys are reacting to something off camera would be great. Thanks for always being educational and entertaining!
Thanks to the whole Goulet pen team for all that you do! I'm both proud and concerned to find out I've watched all 12 days 39 min and 22 seconds over the past 12 months.... went from not knowing what a "nib" was to attending the DC show in person. All because this is such a welcoming and fun community. Cheers!
Great job, fellas. I'll make it to the D.C. show one year soon. And in terms of the weather, I'm with Drew here. I hate summer period. Autumn is spectacular & October is absolutely my favorite month. 🍁🍁🍂🍂
So for liquid water colours, even the dye based ones like the Ecoline range that sometimes say you can use them in a fountain pen, I think they typically have gum arabic in them. The pigment ones are not feasible at all, they aren't like pigment inks, they are paint.
please, please give us a Fountain Pen Jolly Rodger sticker!! Also, love the episode :) Thank you so much for putting it up for all of us who couldn't make it in person! I love laughing along with the live crowd! (PS chocolate tootsi pops are my favorite, but I've never had one in my goulet order-)
Happy Anniversary, GPC! Drew- I also have a full-size Pilot Elite! The particular model I have is fitted with a not-quite-inlaid 14k nib and a spring clip. The nib date is 1984, so you know it's good!
I'm at my parents' house this week and remembered that y'all spent some time scanning old film photos so I'm doing the same! While listening to your pencasts of course. Great combination, I got to talk to my dad (who loves random facts about fishes and coffee) about how I watch two other dads (who know random facts about woodworking and games). Love this episode. I've got a new bucket list item after watching this: to go to the DC pen show and see y'all once in my life!
You guys are so great in front of a live audience! Loved it! My husband told me yesterday that in an effort to use up some things in the cupboard he combined rice, steel cut oats, tomato sauce and eggs.He swears it was really good. 😬 I'd rather have Brian's fruit with lunch meat! (Although I guess without the oats it could be ok.)
I’m a newbie who discovered fountain pens this year and have learned so much from your videos. Loved meeting both of you at the show. Felt like I was 14 and meeting Duran Duran.
This live Pen Cast is my favorite, thank you for doing all the extra work to make this happen. Drew, you are my cool weather loving brother. I have seriously thought about getting a house close to the South Pole (New Zealand, Argentina, or Chile) so that when the heat starts bearing down in the USA, I would hop on a plane and go the where the heat is dying, and vice versa.
Hello, I know y’all just got back from the DC pen show, and I’m going to my first pen show at the Dallas Pen Show next month. I know you have a “Tips for pen shows” snippet from a Q&A, but that was like 7 years ago so I would love to see a new one.
Ohoohhoh one more. About the summer thing. On the east coast you see sourgum trees (tupelo/pepperidge/ black gum/etc) turn first, often a bright red and i thought id share how i used to teach kids another name for these trees is the "sad teacher tree" because it not only signals the end of summer but tragically for teachers, the start of school/work. Learned that at like years old and loved it
Brian my daughter brought me a French ruled clairfontaine notebook from her visit to France. Yes we need a new video on it and you can give ideas to how to use it. Great show guys. I have not only watched all the Pencasts but also your previous videos such as the Q and A and other creations.
This was a great event and I’m so thankful these two did all the work to give us this opportunity! The no.1 winner of the raffle won the pen holder that Brian debuted here btw!!
Video idea: Products we forget we have. (ETA- working video title: Products that have flown under the radar) I’d love to see a video with products I never hear about and that you all don’t remember you have. 🤘🏼😸 Loved this live Pencast and all the interactions. Great job! 🖋
So cool to see this! I am from Washington, DC., but now live in Arkansas. Now this is another reason to get back home! And what is wrong with 🍋? I love 🍋! Watercolor has gum Arabic in it as the binder - that would stop up any pen, surely. And it is pigment, of course.
Loved this live Pencast! Wish y’all were coming to Dallas to do it again. Question for future thought: Have you ever considered offering ink suggestions to go with the pens you sell or maybe just the New Arrivals?
Thank you so much for doing the pencast at the pen show! I live in Alaska and can only dream of attending a pen show. A question I have is, How can fountain pens become more prevalent in use with college students? I went back to college at 46 years old and already had a love of fountain pens, so I use them 99% of the time. However, a lot of students I talk to don't see how fountain pens would be convenient for them to use. What would you say to those students? How about school themed fountain pens? I'd love to see a University of Alaska Fairbanks or Ohio State University pen!!😃 I almost forgot...there absolutely MUST be a skull and crossed fp's sticker forthcoming!!!
Re: drying pen ink for water color-- when doing this at home at room temp you run the risk of stuff growing in it. If you're dedicated to it, consider a dehydrator and a wide pan maybe. But honestly it works fine as liquid anyway. Related- I've been known to do some whimsical experimentation with ink (i also feel immense guilt for wasting pigment so i have many times saved the first rinse of my pen to dry in the past)🥺
Happy to watched this show - good as allways. The mike - without the «protector» worked, in this rom, better for Drew´s bass voice and was not as scratchy/mike voiced as sometimes at your home office. The mike has potensial. Thanks - love your showes. Fun and some informative.
Aww love this! I was working (like actual work on my laptop) and I had something else playing on YT and then this came on. I was just listening... and then I heard what sounded like Brian and I heard mention of pens. So I switched from the software I was working on and lo and behold, it was the Pencast live! Brian and Drew both sound so different here. I had to pause the video after waiting to hear Drew speak because I wasn't sure if the change was just a Brian change or if the same change happened to Drew. This is so funny to observe. It's like they're new people but not really. 🤣
Agreed about deep purple as end of summer color! I had done the same thing in my pen. I did lean into darker greens too … PR Ebony Green in that Monteverde Green Carbon Fiber. Perfect pairing!
1:10:26 That’s called a quesadilla, lol, the grilled cheese taco. Yes, quesadillas are amazing 😋 And nope, tacos are not sandwiches. Tacos use tortillas, sandwiches use bread. Source: I’m from Mexico 💚🤍❣️ P.S. Hard shell tacos are close to abominations in Mexico. (No offense intended to anyone who likes them.) Tortillas commonly are corn or flour, and should always be soft. A hard tortilla is called a tostada, and those are flat. I guess a “hard-shell” is a curved tostada.
That Elite is a nice looking pen. From what I read once, when Pilot released the Elite we are more familiar with, the pocket pen, it was called the Elite S, for Small, because they had that longer Elite. That Script Nib is nice. Pilot created the Script nib with Stenographers in mind with the idea of comfort for long writing sessions. There is a little flex or bounce and a little line variation. The Script is a big reason that my Elite (S) is my favourite pen, along with the fact that you can't go wrong with Pilot nibs.
By some great piece of luck I happened to stumble onto this video and decided to watch it (because my first ever pen show is coming up in August in San Francisco). That’s when I heard Drew talk about his gift pen, a Pilot Custom 74 Special Edition only available in Japan. One look at it made my heart beat quicken and I knew I had to find one. I did! On eBay in Japan, for $149, which I thought was a good price. The only problem is it wasn’t available in Medium. So I took a risk and bought my first pen in Fine. I hope I like it!
I got one of those on eBay also, last month. As far as I understand it, they only come in fine. It's a great nib, though. Very smooth, and I still get nice shading with the ink I chose. I hope you'll like yours 😁
@@AndreaP_N7 Thanks for your best wishes! And for clearing up my concerns about missing out on Medium nib due to impatience. Obviously, if it is only made in Fine, I’d have been waiting in vain for one to show up and I’d never have found one. Now I just have to curb my impatience while I wait for it to arrive. The vendor is in no hurry as he says it’ll be shipped within ten days. Ouch…
I loved Drew and Brian together, they appeared to have great chemistry on screen! I am really enjoying watching this while it also makes me sad watching it.... 💔
My 2 cents, for what it’s worth: I’m with Drew on having the good ink in a bad pen. I had to chuckle about Drew’s list of themes. Sounds like the lists we used to keep in the lab for when we would need to set up new machines or servers. And, for me, the end of summer is always a golden straw color. The end of harvest. The mountain meadows have gone to seed and are turning golden. There’s a scent, too, of the warm sun on the dried plants. A bit different than a hay meadow, due to the various native plants-a bit more pungent.
Drew, your description of the nib on the Spanish Bic fountain pen sounds like the many interchangeable nibs made for the Esterbrook pens. The real, New Jersey swirly unique material made by the millions, and a few smaller models Esterbrooks. Not those overblown fancy resin spring-loaded cap closure pens, but real Esterbrooks. No tipping material, just a teensy roll under the tips of the tines. I have a couple dozen of them, and they are pretty cool. Ok, I do have a new Esterbrook. It was a gift from a very nice Canadian RU-vid pen guy. Ok, I have a few more modern Esterbrooks, too. Don't hate me.
Oh YES it is Bond (eye) in Australia AND.... to add to Drew's legal certification of Australian pronunciation (old video) it is Ozzie, Os-tray-lia AND ... as in Robert Oster Australis is pronounced Os-trah-lis. We just like to mess with everyone, or we are nationally very confused.
Drew: “I need some sorta loupe, I dunno” Me: someone’s gonna slap a loupe on the table soon or I do not know this pen community Brian: “oh we got a loupe right here. Boom!” GOOD JOB PEN COMMUNITY, 10/10 👏
Uh oh, did Brian lose the video clips :) And man, I rarely ever see vintage pilots and sorta gave up looking at the shows. I should have tried harder. Also good to say hi at the show, I forgot to actually introduce myself and did walk by hi's, lol. And damn, how did I miss that Pilot sticker, also team Custom Urushi!
1:14:52 LOL! I had this conversation with my team earlier this week. Hot cereal yes. Cold cereal no. My team was mixed but I say a hotdog 🌭 is a sandwich 🥪
Hi! This was a fun pencast! You guys sounded more basso than on your regular recordings. . .Hmmmm. . . Anyway, enjoyed it a lot! Not only do I love chocolate tootsie pops, I am a left-handed fountain pen user!
Kind petition if Brian can place some hammocks near the turkeys. With some luck their thing is to try out some fun hammocks and if we are extra lucky there could be a pic 🦃🏖️🦃🏝️🦃
Oh my gosh, watching the Tootsie Pops moments.... We don't have them in Australia, so that was one little addiction that I didn't have to worry about. Then I received my first Goulet order. What have you done to me?!😂 It was chocolate. I have a new addiction- looking to buy some on Amazon Au right now, $42.00 for a small packet. The only thing keeping me grounded is saving for my next grail.
