In today's live tutorial, we're going to be looking at a cool way to get your DAW sound out to a live stream - that doesn't require any cables, and can get around a large number of issues that you may be having.
We're using the ReaPlugs from Cockos (the people who make Reaper) and specifically the ReaStream plugin. It's free, and can be found here:- reaper.fm/reapl...

For those not getting "reaplug-standalone" to appear in the VST 2.0 menu in OBS please make sure that the dll is installed in any of the following folders: C:/Program Files/Steinberg/VstPlugins/ C:/Program Files/Common Files/Steinberg/Shared Components/ C:/Program Files/Common Files/VST2 C:/Program Files/Common Files/VSTPlugins/ C:/Program Files/VSTPlugins/ Reaplugs was being installed to my Cakewalk VST Plug ins which is NOT searched by OBS. Other DAWS may install to a different folder but all you need to do is copy the reaplug-standalone dll to one of the folders I listed above. Hope this helps some!

I can get ReaStream in OBS and in Audacity separately but can't get them to talk to each other *at all*. A whole week this has been doin my head in.

@@singingplanet I had a similar problem with my DAW (Cakewalk) and OBS - aside from what I've already stated I also had my sends/receives set wrong - both my DAW and OBS were set to send so nothing worked - once I sent from DAW and received from OBS I was ok - not sure if this helps as I'm not exactly sure the full nature of your problem

@Corey KippsCan feel your pain - had to really fiddle to get stuff to work. My only suggestions are to try all paths I mentioned making sure the reaplug dll is only in one of the folders (it shouldn't matter tbh but......) - making sure Program Files is on C directory and not on a different one (sorry not wanting to patronise) - rescanning VST folders in Cakewalk/Bandlab - not sure what version of Cakewalk you are using but I'm using the Bandlab version (although I do have Sonar installed but not linked with reaplugs) - hoping it's not some other extraneous conflict which sucks to track down - hoping you can sort it :-)

Man ive been trying to figure out how to livestream my music production for months, even tried routing an AUX from my soundcard into my PC input, but that sounded really bad, was just about to buy a second Soundcard until i found your vid.

set device to WAV out.. problem solved.. not sure why no one has figured this out... i live stream reaper every day for 4 months straight now. I never Use ASIO anymore unless i am recording live guitars into my DAW... and for my livestreaming guitar setup i run my SSL2 interface direct into obs. I use my guitar amp and real pedals for live effects. I can also tell you how to set up an electric drum kit for live streaming thru a DAW with samples being triggered. you need 2 laptops or 2 pc running... one has the DAW running only with the drum kit mapped to your samples. Then you have the sound output set as the sound card... use RCA cables out of the soundcard going into a USB mixer set up on the streaming pc..

Ok so obs supports vst plugs. I just want to run a guitar amp plug like cakewalk th3, and have a mic channel for talking/ singing. Why do i even need a daw, can’t I just do that straight in obs by setting 2 new audio sources and tell obs which channels of my interface are the inputs for each source..whats latency like in obs?

Thanks for this tutorial. We've the Scarlett 18i20 but OBS and more than 2 inputs...:-( So I understand that input 1-6 can go to reaper first and then to OBS through your tutorial?

This method doesn't work on Linux. Reaper can read Reastream, but the plugin is not recognized by Linux. Do you have any idea? Thanks.

I thought I had found the key! But I still cannot get this to work. I see the audio in ReaStream in my DAW, but for the life of me I cannot see levels within OBS, it doesn't even have a pan slider for the DAW channel. It plays desktop audio just fine. I am using Reason 11, any ideas? Love your videos!

Does restream work with protools? I didn’t see it in my protools plug-ins. I tried this then with reaper and got no audio from it in OBS. Anyone else get this result?

I’ve recorded my videos in OBS, instead of live streaming them. When I listen to the playback, everything is clipped dramatically. I have a really bad CPU, not ideal for music production. I checked the task manager and CPU was at 90% with just a few plugins, Google Chrome open, and Ableton Live open. I think the plugins and all the processes running in the background is too much for my CPU. Can you confirm that the CPU is the issue?

I'm having an issue where Reaper hogs my Audio input 1, and I can't get sound to OBS from my mic when Reaper is open and focused. If I either don't have Reaper opened, or Reaper is not the window in focus, OBS gets the mic signal no problem. I'm using an Audient ID44, but I suspect that this is not isolated to Audient.

Could be a sample rate thing, reaper will lock the interface into whatever sample rate it needs and OBS will be frozen out unless it all matches

I'm actually excited enough to write a comment for the first time in years. This solution is so elegant compared to the others I've found out there through the years. The plugin seems to be good quality, it's very adaptable, flexible and very light. Thanks a million. Goodbye to hating my life fiddling with voicemeeter and direct sound. FCValle Ended up getting it working a few different ways. Have a video on my channel I just put up the other day showing how to get DAW audio into Zoom etc. Same concept works

Important to add that you'll need to install reaplugs even if you use Reaper otherwise OBS won't recognize the ReaStream plugin.

Same issue here. Did you ever figure it out? He mentions installing Voicemeeter, but I'd rather not deal with that if I don't have to. Windows audio is janky enough on it's own.

I appreciate the tutorial you put together here. I had previously attempted this and failed time and time again. Being a TCP/IP networking nerd, it drove me mad not being able to get Reaper w/ Reastream into OBS/Reastream to receive any audio. I tried localhost, 127.0.0.1 & local network IP, nothing. I checked and rechecked firewall rules, killed the firewall completely and yet still nothing. And then it finally dawned on me, I had my damn VPN client running in the background. I killed the VPN and BAMMM, it worked..... It's the simple, often overlooked little things that are almost always the culprit...

can you help me, i've tried everything you said. i'm using Studio one 6, and i've installed reastream, reastream is getting Audio from studio one but not in OBS. even its on audio input device, and the reseatm on OBS is recieve audio. still not getting audio from studio one. i'm using a Beringer UMC22

Thanks for the great video! Unfortunately all of my VST's are in an external drive since I have so many. Reastream works in Ableton well, and I installed a second version in my C: drive so that OBS could recognize it. However, OBS does not recognize the DAW audio as I'm assuming it has to be run with the same instance / location of the .dll, because I have two separate instances running -- one in Ableton, and another in OBS. Unfortunately OBS does not have a custom VST folder selection option so that I can use the correct Reastream instance (located in my F:/ drive). Anyone know a way around this? Cheers.

Hi Adam! I need your help: I'm using both inputs on my interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4). Can I send input 2 to OBS Mix/Aux input, but routing input 1 only to Reaper? I would like to record a "guitar recording session" through Reaper but the clean guitar signal is going to OBS Mix/Aux as well. Help me please, I'm really having a hard time figuring this thing out! lol

Hi, gone crazy like many others seeing videos that confuse more than anything. Tried this very simple application and it all came together (also using reaper channel for VO). I did a quick recording from OBS to test and sounds good BUT, there is an echo/delay on my voice (in the recording). I use Reaper, PreSonus USB96 interface and the latest version of OBS and Reaper software. I want to live stream gig playing backing tracks from my DAW and process my vox and an acoustic (assuming I can simply set up another track on Reaper for that) right from Reaper. I'm assuming there is some wrong choice I am making in the OBS settings that's creating this. Can you (or anyone) help me or steer me in the right direction to resolve this? My brain hurts a little from days of trying to figure this all out. I would be ever so grateful. Thanks.

Soooo, at 15:15 your audio gets distorted the same way mine is. Everything is great in Reaper, but the Reastreamed audio in OBS is very distorted. I only have 1 track streaming though. I have tried 10 things so far, and cannot figure out how to get the audio to work again. IT HAS WORKED BEFORE!!!! Pretty sure I didn't change anything since it worked last.

I had no idea there was a Reaper plugin that could do this! I've been using Voxengo Recorder which works great (and is free too) but it's nice to know there's more than one way to skin this cat.

i use it too. For some strange reason reastream sometimes doesn't work. it's really really frustrating. on the other hand, voxengo works every time all the time and it's so simple to use. just assign it to any device you are not using and add that device in reaper. voila!

Windows 11 users will need to enable microphone access permission. It's a reasonable assumption when using external audio devices that any "mic" Windows sees should be disabled and this issue comes up often in OBS discussions. OBS users are typically receiving audio either as part of the camera stream or a USB mic or some other interface with its own driver, and OBS sees those devices just fine with mic access permission turned off. But in the case where we're using a dummy audio input capture in OBS as a holder for the VST interface for ReaStream, the Windows mic permission disables that input. I'm not convinced this isn't an OBS bug, a lot of Reaper users run into it, anyway this is the workaround.

HELP! First off, THANK YOU for this vid. Basically this setup worked for me... except for one thing (and it may not be possible... not sure) Best I give details; I have 4 pre-recorded tracks in Cubase project. I have two additional tracks for me to input "live" audio (guitar & vocal). Now I can play my Cubase project and OBS picks up and will record that Cubase audio and my vid. I record arm my 2 live tracks in Cubase then hit RECORD. And I see it is recording in Cubase, but if recording or streaming in OBS, the being recorded live thru Cubase 2 tracks DO NOT come through. Am I missing something? TY in advance.

YOu need to explain what is going on and you are not. I cannot get the two Reastreams to even see a signal coming in the DAW. The tracks indicate but nothing on the master. Like the Audio Output Capture. What is this capturing? What is your setting in OBS for Desktop or is it disabled? You really didn't explain this well at all. I am still lost.

Does this work with Mac? My issue was using studio live to record a podcast but also to play some audio and record it simultaneously while streaming but studio one just wouldn’t allow it kept skipping and clicking when I’d try to play wav or MP3 tracks from it and the rest of the time audio would pop and click and go in and out...hoping this plug in does the trick. I’m running my mics into a studio live board that sounds great just would like to be able to pull up some songs on studio one and pull tracks out here or there for the livestream using OBS for alternate views. So far I managed to get this working for Tracktion Waveform and OBS, no problem. However, I wanna use this with Discord to where everyone in the voice channel I'm in can hear my DAW and my voice and not just my DAW. Is there a way to achieve this?

How can you do this with one computer without the cpu load? When OBS and Ableton (and the computer camera) are running at the same time it is just so heavy on the CPU. Btw: I have 16Gb Ram 15 inch macbook pro 2015, which works fine most of the time, I can use youtube and Ableton at the same time its no prob. Also: Could you show how to do this on two computers? I know you mentioned it in the video through ip address connection, I'm just not gettin it. Thanks in advance :) Alternatively, how are people getting around the cpu load? To me it seems to be absolutely imperative to use two computers for that.

Im having trouble getting my sound to not get all phased and wack when looping metal guitar live... Im sure its probably a frequency/routing issue of competing band. Not sure the best solution... Im playing amp routed usb into Reaper.. Restream is on the master... Superloop8 is on a seperate track and setup to playback(recieves from 1, outputs to desktop and back to 1... so i can hear the loop)... Anyone know any solutions or more info needed please let me know.. been battling it for awhile... Trying to get a more clear/balanced loop on reaper vs using my multifxpedal

How do you stop the direct signal from going to OBS? I only want to have OBS capture audio from reaper, both my mic and my guitar...but OBS is picking up the direct signal from my audio interface. I have the monitor knob turned all the way to monitor...but the signal still goes through.

hey guys so this method works with fairlight in davinci resolve. just make a new project, create a timeline (settings dont matter), go into fairlight, patch your mic and then apply the restream plugin. it is so easy and davinci has awesome voice processing including ai noise reduction. Try it and you wont regret it. I am going to make a video about this soon look out for a channel called A+ Tech. The whole reason I am so excited about this is because Davinci Resolve is powerful and completely free (the free version has missing features from studio but not in fairlight for this)

At about 13.00 You said OBS does NOT support Asio? I have a focusrite 2i2 1st Generation which uses Asio. So does that mean OBS is not ever going to be able to work the loopback process?

I recently switched to Win11 and now the ReaStream plugin in OBS no longer receives any audio from my daw. It worked perfectly fine on Win10. Has anyone had the same problem and was able to solve it?

Thanks Adam, I have spent the last few hours trying to do this. You see my Daw and plugins are all installed on a different hard drive other than windows, therefore OBS could not find it and there is no way to point it to it. I use reaper so I had the plugs but it still did not locate it (due to them being on a different drive). Watching your video I discovered that I needed to reinstall the plugs in default location and.. problem solved

DAMIGARA it was to do with the input capture I chose or the sample rate not matching the capture on obs . Make sure everything matches sample rate wise or try changing the capture source on obs

Whenever I try and load reastream as a filter OBS just crashes. I've tried all the solutions I can find online, any ideas anyone? Is it because in my dropdown list I can only see reastream and not reastream-standalone?

If crackling occurs with this method, try the ReaRoute method, that fixed it to me, super easy as well but reaper only.

it reads your basic vst folders automatically like steinberg/vstplugins, program files/vstplugins, etc. But if you use reaper, you still need to install reaplugs, otherwise they'll will be only visible for reaper as internal plugins.
