Love your content Tom! Over the last couple of years I have had over 700 meetings in Teams. I use a EOS R with a 35 mm 1.8. Camera is powered with a dummy battery. I use an Elgato Camlink 4K to connect it to my computer. Also have two Elgato Keylight Air for lighting. I do not stream on any platforms, so It’s only for work. Yes it’s overkill, but I love it. I use a Jabra Evolve 75 UC headset for audio. I am really happy with the video quality, but would like to “up my game” on the audio side. Would love to see some more content on typical WFH gear and setups. Keep doing what you’re doing and build your channel! Best wishes from Norway! Thanks!

Great video! One mic beginners might want to check out as well, is the new Beacn Mic. It's a USB mic, but it does all it's processing, noise gate, compression, anti-clipping onboard. All the DSP is done in real time negating the need for an audio interface or VST's thus lightening the load on your PC as it won't have to run any VST's in the background. The software side of it is pretty incredible and simple as well. Very intuitive. I WAS an XLR guy before I got mine. Less things to process or worry about is always handy. I also got the Beacn Mix and it's certainly something beginners could really benefit from as well. Or an experienced streamer just looking to simplify their rig without cutting quality or features (My situation). I swear this isn't a paid promotion haha, I'm just really impressed with mine. P.S. LOVE the Aquabats Art! Such a great band.
@tombuck

OOoh, thanks for appreciating my ridiculous number of Aquabats posters 😁 The Beacn seems interesting. I've been watching reviews on it- EposVox's was particularly interesting (including the follow up) since it shows how much the software is a part of the mic.
@matocaster
@matocaster 2 года назад
@@tombuck One can never have too many Aquabats posters 😉 EposVox did a great job (as usual) and his follow up was great. It’s so tricky with mic’s as everyone’s voice varies so much. I didn’t run into the issue he brought up that he had to eat the mic for it to sound good, but different techniques for different voices I suppose. I checked out a few more of your videos, great stuff! You’ve got a new subscriber.

Great video, Tom. If I can add a caveat for beginners: USB power _may_ overheat a camera in a way that the dummy battery power does not. I found this out the hard way in the middle of giving a remote lecture! It was explained to me that USB power is not actually running the camera, but it's charging the battery, which is running the camera. So if the battery power is heating the camera, and the USB power is heating the battery, then the camera can shut itself down from overheating right in the middle of a lecture to 100 sophomores! Or so I'm told.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
Ahh, very interesting! Thanks for the explanation!
@xknoewx
@xknoewx 2 года назад
Yeah dummy batteries are definitely the best. Remove that hot insulator in the camera body
@GuilDormeus
@GuilDormeus 2 года назад
In theory that makes sense. Ive been using a dummy Battery for years for recording seminars for Client work and video Podcast and you can still encounter overheating with a dummy Battery. I ran into that issue with a Sony A7Siii, A7sii and an A7c after about 1-2hrs of use.
@xknoewx
@xknoewx 2 года назад
@@GuilDormeus yeah the Sony alpha get hot with regular use. I usually chance the auto shutdown setting to a higher level, to avoid this. But with the hot battery inside, and the hot processing, that would happen more regularly.
@mbvglider
@mbvglider 2 года назад
Agreed. IMO, if you're going for hours at a time in a fixed location, honestly, you should go with something that supports dummy battery use. My A7 IV has a lower total running time than my R6 or ZV-E10, because my R6 or ZV-E10 can use first-party dummy batteries, and the A7 IV overheats within an hour if on USB power, it can't go past 2.5 hours on battery power, and Sony does not actually support dummy battery use with the A7 IV, so it's completely at your own risk if you want to use a third-party dummy battery. I used to stream with my RP and M6 Mark II, and those are a bit more affordable than an R6, even, though honestly, if you're a dedicated streamer, just get the ZV-E10.
@pookinsp2324
@pookinsp2324 Год назад
This continues to be my favorite "setup" description on the web. A well-thought-out approach to a quality stream with room to grow. At the same time, I was overwhelmed after dropping "the basics" into my Amazon shopping cart and seeing a total of $1,710 (mac mini $600, Ecamm $200, Sony E-10/kit $750, Samsung mic $60, Camlink $100). That's still a high entry point considering that creativity and imagination are the driving factors to a successful stream (as demonstrated by this excellent channel). The industry needs more affordable camera options. Maybe the cloud-based encoding/streaming services make sense as an entry point?
@tombuck
@tombuck Год назад
It’s definitely not cheap, but I tried to differentiate between “essentials” for getting a stream up and running vs. what you need to have something that looks and sounds a bit more professional. It took many years for me to learn, but the phrase “buy once, cry once” definitely rings true 😁

Sony A7iv is the ultimate livestream setup with 1080p USB streaming with hotshoe digital audio for high end microphones and HDMI external monitoring during the stream
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
It's pretty rad and I'd definitely recommend it. I can't believe how good it is for streaming. I was thinking the ZV-E10 is a bit of an easier camera to recommend for someone just jumping in to the basics.
@mbvglider
@mbvglider 2 года назад
@@tombuck I have acquired both, and for full-time streamers, I honestly think the ZV-E10 is better. Mainly, there's no supported first-party solution for the A7 IV that can stream forever from AC power because if you use USB power, it will shut off (presumably from overheating), so you will need to turn USB power off. If you stream for 2 hours or shorter, that's not a problem because the Z batteries will last 2 hours at least, but if you stream for longer than that, you will need to change batteries, use an unsupported third-party power solution, or use the cumbersome and expensive NPA-MQZ1K. Meanwhile, the ZV-E10 has a supported dummy battery and AC power kit from Sony and while it tops out at 720p through the USB-C interface, it can stream at that quality forever, and you do have the HDMI option if you need 1080p or better, though I'd argue that the 720p is good enough, and the USB streaming is very accurate compared to a cheap capture card. I have yet to test if the A7 IV can stream HDMI indefinitely while on USB power, and if that is the case, it could be attractive, but at that point, you could just as easily use another Sony without built-in streaming. Basically, for those who stream for 2 hours or less, I think the A7 IV is great, but if you want to run it several hours a day, go with the ZV-E10. It's also a much lighter camera, hence easier to mount, and with lenses like the Sigma 16mm f/1.4, you'll get plenty of quality from APS-C anyway.
@mbvglider
@mbvglider 2 года назад
p.s. It's absolutely mind-boggling that Sony does not make a FZ100 dummy battery. Not only that, it seems like they think you'll never need one, considering that cameras with FZ100 batteries don't have a little flap for a battery cable, which is something that exists on every Canon mirrorless camera I've ever had (even a lowly M200) and even Sony cameras that use the FW50 battery. Hence, even if Sony were to make a dummy battery, you would have to take the battery door off, or use the camera with the battery door open. What kind of genius decided on this? I don't know.

Question, is there any point in using atem mini and OBS or it has to be one over the other?
@r.lew7424
@r.lew7424 2 года назад
It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Short answer is yes, you can use them both together. I use ecamm live and I have a atem mini pro as well. I've used both together once when I did a studio review. I was able to connect 3 additional camera views to ecamm via the atem. However the atem shows up as only one input. That means you have to change the camera view from the atem not within ecamm (or OBS) in your setup. Helpful for some that prefer a hardware switch to use with livestream software.

Tom. Thanks you so much for all of the great content you make and deliver to all of to watch and learn from! From everything thing I can gather, I have a EOS R and learned that the camera will not allow me stream out the HDMI in 4K. Strange I have a little M50 II and it seems to put out higher resolution to my Ecamm setup. To do a true 4K workflow, do I need to follow your lead to your recent transition to Sony? If so bummer on all of the Canon glass I have accumulated…. Thoughts on the route to true 4K ? Thanks, Randy Sinda
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
Thanks Randy! I know that the Atomos Ninja will aopen up 4:2:2 10 but 4K externally on the R, but I honestly don’t know what the actual hdmi output limit is. Since the ATEM Mini is limited to 1080 I never really worried about it for streaming. For recording, I stick with the internal cards, and yep, that was part of why I switched to Sony. But if you’re heavily invested in Canon and want full 4K (or heck even 8K!) some of the newer models might work for you. Just because they didn’t suit my needs perfectly doesn’t mean they’re not great 👍

thank you for this great video. Love the puns too! I have 2 cam links and 1 mini stream deck, using obs. I purchased it these so I could record video and manage 3 camera scenes all at the same time . overhead, front face and split scene. Using my mb pro 13 once I had all set up and had all on recording mode my fans were so loud I could not hear myself. I was so scared my mb would blow up I stopped and have not been able to fix the issue. Looks like I will need a computer that can run all this at once. Thanks again for this great video explaining everything in plain English helped me understand the setup I have and diagnose my problem. Now I just have to save enough to purchase a computer and I think I will have a decent setup. 😘

Thanks for the kind words! Sounds like you've got quite an awesome setup, except for the super loud computer. I had that same issue with my Intel MacBook Pro. It won't hurt the computer, but the fan noise can definitely cause problems for your audio (I even tried hiding mine on the floor under the desk for a while 😁). That's why I ended up getting the base model M1 Mac mini last year. Any of the M1 or M2 Macs will give you amazing performance while starting completely silent (the Mini is just the least expensive option- if you checked Apple's Refurbished store it's often there for under $600).

Hello Tom, I’m looking to buy a newer model Mac mini, but what do you suggest I go with on a budget? I currently am using the Mac Mini late 2014 with 256 storage. I am looking into investing with a 2018 or 2020 Mac mini model that I can afford that will allow me to live stream with EcammLive and do videos at the same time. The Mac mini that I am currently using locks up and freezes so i’m looking into investing something that portable. What do you suggest?
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
Any of the M1 models are the way to go. Do not get an Intel Mini! It will not last nearly as long or perform nearly as well. As for RAM and memory, get as much as you can afford. My base model is still going strong, and it’s not hard to add external storage, so I’d prioritize RAM over storage. 👍

Hi Tom, I'm just following up with my prior question about my Sony A7C overheating after 90 min use in a 72˚F room. Well after watching a few videos here on RU-vid that had other similar Sony cams overheating. All of the people that had the same issue were able to switch from "Standard" to "High" in the Menu of their cams and it solved their issues. Of course my Menu selection on the A7C is set up a bit differently, where I couldn't find it as they instructed. So I had to go through a few folders in the Menu and I found out where it was: Menu > Setup2 > Auto Power OFF Temp. > Standard or High. In the "Auto Power OFF Temp." section, it was set to "Standard." Switching it from "Standard" to "High" allowed me to keep my camera on for hours. So far I'm at 3.5+ hours and it's still going strong and the camera is just warm to the touch on the battery/handle side. You may want to do a video on this, as you do use these Sony cams quite a bit and other people may be going through the same issue.Thanks for your help anyway and keep up the amazing work!

Great video. I had a question about cameras. Given how ubiquitous phone cameras are and the camera apps. How do those compare to the cameras you mentioned?
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
This is a really great question. They all shoot 4K, so what’s the difference right? Phones have some incredible software that gives really great results, but cameras like these have giant sensors and interchangeable lenses, which just can’t be replicated with software. So basically it’s easier to get good results with a phone, but you can get better results with a dedicated camera set properly. But if you’ve got a lot of bright light and you want the entire frame in focus, the difference won’t be as noticeable. That’s a short explanation, but I hope it makes sense.

WOW mark the calendar WE TOTALLY AGREE! Sony EV-10 is the best camera for a Normal webstream (1080 and not 4K). On audio, I disagree somewhat but to be honest, I always overdo audio (remember I live in Nashville, i.e. MUSIC City USA) but great overview! Epiphan has a complete system that is rock-solid. Tom, have you gone with a 4k streaming setup? The 4k vs 1080 stream is a tough decisions I ran into. As you mention, ATEM mini is a great switcher but then I'm stuck (at least in the short term) with a 1080 stream. Did you pivot to the Elgato CamLink and ECamm for 4k instead, or is 4k not a wise approach when getting started? The M1 Apple Mac Mini has 2 independent Thunderbolt buses, so maybe the Mac Mini could support 2 4k Camlink camera feeds. In you last "studio tour" in April (2023) the ATEM was still in prominence. ( And speaking of the ATEM, do you have plans to review the Osee GoStream Deck?) You have really "set the bar high" when it comes to production quality and your Sony cameras are 4k, just not sure how those 4k cameras get mixed into the production side.

@@tombuck Yeah, I get you. I've always been disappointed in stuff like the Blue Yeti, though because it has all those polar patterns and such. And then there's the software for some of them...I say get an SM57 with the windscreen and a cheaper USB interface and you're good to go. I'm still using a $50 behringer interface at my streaming setup because it plug and play. Also, I think condensers are more challenging for the inexperienced because they have no idea how much the ambient room noise is going to impact their overall sound. But all of this is super solid advice and everyone should listen to Tom!

Hey Tom----: I'm using Streamyard to record all my podcasts. I have the basic pro plan at $25/month so I can only record at 720p. Do you think having a good DSLR such as a ZV-10 or A5100 with that Sigma 16mm lens is even worth the investment if you can only shoot 720p as opposed to using an iPhone as a webcam upgrade? I REALLY want to get a Sony camera with a great lens but at 720p don't know if it will make a noticeable difference? Lastly is there a big difference quality wise between 720 and 1080 to, again, make it worth to spend $1000-1500 on a solid camera and a good lens (like the Sigma 16mm)?
