Gerald Undone you are the best at explaining things. I made a video (which I though was brilliant) explaining why 24fps looks better than any other frame rate. Aside from the common answers given "cinematic look". I used math to get the real answer. It’s a really short video if you can check it out Just wanted to know ur opinion on it and also if it makes sense to u. The video is about two minutes long
If you have two minutes tell me if this video makes sense to you. And if it would be worth it to explain it on ur channel. I just want to grow in the right direction and if I get the opinion on it from someone like you who’s really good at explaining things with tech. Cameras.... 💪 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AjeLrDdOD9Q.html
How does Gerald has only 119k subs. This guy deserves so much more due to his knowledge and content he is bringing. Hope you are well, Gerald. Keep the good content going, one of my fav subs.
Started watching about three months ago when I was looking to stretch my creative vision! I subbed and watch when ever I am able. Brilliant stuff! The knowledge base is awesome!
This is the only video I've found that goes through the detailed information of the camera control and how it corresponds to what you would be doing on the camera itself. THANK YOU! I've learned most of it through trial and error, but I want to be able to teach others how to remotely control our system and when you're looking for the iris control, for example, it is pretty difficult to figure out quickly.
Watched after the main recording. This video is so good. Your pacing and cadence are great for teaching. I'm at that age of almost missing out on this tech and you make it easy for me hold on and get up to speed. Thank you.
Wow! I'm watching in 1440 & the image looks great! I normally don't turn up the quality that far on my now 11 year old laptop for fear of drag & freezing, but this looks & works awesome. Thanks for getting me to push my antique Alienware & keep up the good vids. Regards.
This is brilliant!!! I use to be a cameraman for a local tv station back in the day, & in the studio they had all of this type of gear (analog) & I’ve been trying to find that same type of setup modern in a RU-vid studio & HERE IT IS!!!!! Thank you! 🙏🏾
Hi Gerald! Thank you for such a in depth video. I literally know nothing about livestreaming, but need to get into it for a client. Can you make a more beginner introduction video for livestreaming, what you need for livestreaming etc? Like example what this Atem even is, does and what’s it for and what is other equipment you might need too?
@geraldundone Hey oh! How do you go about getting a good color profile on live streaming with a BMPCC4K/6K camera? Normally when tou shoot with those it’s a flat LOG profile, so how do you go about getting those awesome colors put in? Are you using a lut?
This is a really helpful video. Thank you so much. Can you confirm what lens mount your BMPCC has and what lenses you were using that allowed you to control the auofocus on the lens? And do you know off-hand if the same will work with EF mount + Canon L-Series lenses?
Simply incredible video. Thanks for all your contents. Really amazing! You do help the community a lot - and I've just met your channel tonight. God bless you.
Worth noting that you can save the startup state of the device from ATEM Software Control, so your PiP size should be saved for when you turn the device on.
Holy crap - you are thorough! Love your stuff! Just pre ordered the ATEM Pro because of this video. I was curious if you have any advice on how your HDMI cables are setup. I'm using Sony A7 series bodies with the HDMI micro port. Would you recommend using the adapters to regular size cables, or purchase cables with the appropriate ends? Do you recommend attaching them to the camera and taping them to the tripod for safety? Can I just go on amazon and buy the cheapest cables/adapters? Your setup is something I'd love to be able to replicate, along with some larger setups with the cameras between 10-20 feet from the switcher for an interview/podcast style of setup with up to 4 people. I'm not too familiar on the restrictions or drawbacks of HDMI as this is a first for me. Again, thank you!!!
Gerald, fellow Canadian, love your videos, so much info! You briefed over the colour adjustment aspects when it comes to additional cameras or non BlackMagic units. I have an Olympus and a Panasonic and am considering the older BlackMagic Pocket (1080p) as well. You seemed to indicate you can change at least the basic colour settings, this would be a great feature to level between cameras and get a quality balanced look especially for these non BM cameras. Also would you know if any of the controls such as zoom or focus would work on the older BlackMagic? Thanks!
Note... to people watching who could only get 1080p, i guess you were watching in Safari. Still only allows up to 1080p on RU-vid. Running Chrome on Mac will allow up to 4k. Seems it's to do with the RU-vid codec replay that's built into Chrome (VP9, possibly?) whereas Safari still uses H264. And RU-vid won't support higher than 1080p with H264 in your browser.
Watched ALOT of ATEM Mini tutorials. Yours is the first where I can actually see the BMPCC in action. This is great. Do you know if you can use an URSA Mini Pro in this way? I would have the URSA as the main camera and a BMPCC as a second and third camera.
the gain and shutter speed are a broadcast standard, and the left and right is adjusting you black levels, up/down is adjusting the exposure. the detail is not a bug the camera doesn't output raw over the HDMI, and the detail setting is meant for the other cameras like the studio hd/4k camera or the ursa broadcast.

I've seen several users saying you can use audio interface (or mixer) stereo-out to stereo mini converter - then to atem mini. Do you think that makes any audible difference than the way you did in this video? In this video's case it's fine because you just have one microphone connected to your camera, but I plan to use several microphones in streaming. What would you do?
Thanks for another excellent tutorial. How would you sync a rodecaster with the Atem. Would you go from RC speaker out to usb on PC or from RC speaker out to a trs to the Atem. Want to stay away from latency and having to sync later. I have not been able to find a youtube on this, maybe an idea for a future vid from you.
What a slick live stream setup! Out of curiosity, what is your philosophy regarding the varying colorspaces of the different browsers? If I stream from OBS to RU-vid, Safari shows raised shadows and is desaturated compared to the OBS program monitor. The same stream in Firefox appears to have identical colors to the OBS program monitor. I think that this applies to regular uploads, as well. Do you consider one browser to be more correct than the others? I'm currently using a new Macbook with a P3 display.
Thanks so much for going over all this, Gerald! I'm looking forward to ordering an ATEM Mini to go with my BMPCC4k as soon as this 'virus thing is passed.
Since the question to you in your live stream the other day about "Letterkenny," I've watched a few clips on RU-vid. Oh my goodness. Hillarious! Hadn't heard of it before that.
fantastic video and really helped me before setting up shop i am curious about the video latency of the bmpcc4k from your feed to the livestream if you are monitoring in realtime since i’m a one man show i need to have the least latency or possibility to delay it myself to match up like on ninja v or shogun 7
Hey Gerald, awesome video. Just wanted to let you know that idk if it was just my eyes, but I did notice a change in detail when you switched between high detail and low detail. If you see your skin next to the beard or your hair, you can see some sort of change in detail when your'e switching options.
Hey Gerald, fantastic breakdown. One of the clearest and most concise looks at the ATEM Mini + BMPCC4K integration. We've been using a similar set up (ATEM Mini Pro, BMPCC4K, Oktava going into the pocket, etc), except we moved from OBS to Ecamm. For some reason, we've been having some sync issues on Facebook Live, particularly after Facebook encodes the final recorded video. Any thoughts about that? I'm having a really hard time replicating the issues and it seems FB Live is much less reliable than RU-vid for livestreaming. Thanks again!
Hey man, hope you’re healthy up there. Watching it after the fact on my Apple TV to a 1080 television, it looks up-resed, and pretty compressed. The compression is more noticeable than the scaling, particularly in the gradient on the background. The blocky “JPG-ing” moves and shifts a lot and is distracting. It is worth saying that it could be RU-vid, or the internet in general given that every human on the planet is at home watching stuff. Always appreciate your stuff. I couldn’t get an ATEM mini because they are sold out everywhere, but I did download an app called Ecamm Live which is great. It let me hook up my 5diii via USB, which was a major improvement from my webcam. You might really like that software, worth checking out for live streaming.
Hi Gerald, watching this well after you posted but I believe I caught part of your live stream as well. Just curious, when you are switching to your computer screen, is that using one of the 4 camera in slots on the ATEM? Or is there a separate button on the control surface that allows you to show your screen and you still can have 4 live camera feeds to choose from?
Gerald Undone Ok good to know. I guess it follows that if you wanted to have other content cued up to feed into the livestream from computer that would be the way to go as well?
Thank you for uploading the awesome video! It is super helpful for me to understand what gears I might need for my RU-vid studio! But, I actually have a question! After watching this video, I am thinking to buy BMPCC 4K and ATEM Mini Pro for my need of both live streaming and better quality video recording functionality for my RU-vid video because I also need to share my laptop screen on my video. But I am wondering If my video quality will be downgraded if I am going to record my video straight out of the ATEM Mini Pro that is connected to BMPCC 4K. And, if it does, I am thinking an alternative way that is if recording my video from Atomos Ninja V in which its input is connected to the ATEM Mini Pro HDMI output will compensate the video quality eventually that might have lost from ATEM Mini Pro. So, I am wondering which way of recording will give me the best result. I am also wondering if they are significantly different in video quality overall. 1) BMPCC 4K - ATEM Mini Pro - Atomos Ninja V 2) BMPCC 4K - ATEM Mini Pro Hope my question is make-sense and I will appreciate if you can answer my question :)
Yeah man in My 6K it immediately switches to BRAW but those codecs are not 16:9 I wish there was a Proress version but I get why they wanted it that way.
Do you know if the BM Atem Mini works with the Nikon Z6? I know the UltraStudio Recorder doesn’t work with the Z6, and I’m wondering if the same problem exists with the Atem Mini.
Why is the camera switching to BRAW and other "default" settings if connected to the Atem Mini? I even can´t use framerate less than 60 and no shutterspeed less than 1/60. Is this a bug?
Gerald, This is super-helpful as I navigate streaming video for church in the midst of all this shutdown business. Thanks for putting it together! Out of curiosity, if one were on a shoestring budget and wanted to try and set up a multi-cam stream using something like the ATEM mini, what would you consider to be the best value in terms of cameras with clean HDMI output? I have access to a decent collection of Canon glass. I'd consider used, too. Thanks to you or anyone who could provide some helpful suggestions.
Panasonic GX80/GX85 and G80/G85 are very good value used. GX is smaller and cheaper but doesn't have a mic-in or articulated screen which you might miss.
Gerald, great video. Question, I have my macbook air plugged into channel one, I am attempting to create a commentary video shown on RU-vid. Audio meters are registering in ATEM software control but no sound is coming through to Zoom or my external hard drive. How can I record audio from videos on RU-vid. Thanks
Just started watching, important detail once you setup the picture and picture settings you can 'safe to its default, startup and it remembers it on power on/off. Its great for capture, greenscreen and the audio. Don't understand the weird button layout (will result in mistakes) and that you can't program them. Lastly it really should have ipad support instead of pc or mac much nicer as a control surface.
I understand that the older (1st gen) Pocket Production Camera 4k is cheaper at this point. Does the Atem Mini works with that camera like this setup does for live stream?
I know you’ve moved on to Sony but it appears with Gen 5 you can add sharpening to Braw. Is there a way to add two LUTs in the ATEM software? I use double LUTs in Resolve religiously!
Don't know if it was mentioned here already, but blackmagic released the update for your bug last Wednesday (www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/readme/1696f70aefb146b4bdae6d65f496f5d1). Amongst others, you can read "Fixed issue where +48V phantom power is not re-enabled after displaying color bars.". I can't test it myself without an ATEM/Studio, but take their word for it! :) Not a bad turnaround time though, roughly 10 days.
the LCD turning to all white and then switching off is when the lcd controller turns off while power is still applied to the backlight. no real issue there. (technically the LCD is a whole lot of capacitors, which are emptying themselves, turning the screen to not-blocking light)
Can you do a video on how to match different multi cam cameras with ATEM, if one of them is BMPCC? I assume the camera control only works with BMPCC, so matching BMPCC to the other camera (eg: GH5) is much easier.
Hi! Are you using OBS as you're using the ATEM? Do you need OBS with ATEM? I have a friend whose tech person left and asked me to try to figure this out. Some I'm just searching for help.
Just ordered ATEM localy to use during this quarantine.. silly me - retailer called and said that warehouse from which they should get ATEM is closed for now so it is not clear when I should get it... Eh lets wait then :DD
I think having the phantom power turn off on bar display makes sense as you wouldn't want anyone hearing you at that point. But I agree that it should be possible to re-enable it from the software.
Great video and very informative as always. Question for you when i use the mini xlr port on the black magic my audio is not clean i get interference in my audio it sounds like i can hear something inside of the bmpcc4k so i have been using my tascam to get clean audio am i the only person having this problem thanks.

Gerald, if you are using something like a Decimator, to convert the HDMI signal to SDI and then the opposite back to HDMI, will it still allow you to change the camera settings on the Atem software?
Given that skype, zoom, teams and other apps are all we are using during the crisis i am having great fun with them as a 'webcam' since i can select multiple cameras do animations, greenscreen something stupid ... freaks people out first time hehe
Gerald, Had the mini, then the ISO, now the Extreme. All good until the Extreme. Have you ever heard of an ATEM that does this weird thing on some camera switches. The new camera switched to starts to play in jerky slow motion for a few seconds and then speed up and catches up to real time then everything is good. Several switches later the same thing happens. A 30 minute show produced this anomaly over 10 times.
Quick question is it possible to use two atem mini video mixers together so instead having for hdmi now you have 8 I’m actually thinking about doing something like that
Which codec is a black magic 6k set in pores send via the hdmi in a live stream? Is it MP4? I think it must be H.264 but I couldn't find that out... Please answer me if you know that information.
Are the color grading tools available for camera inputs that do not come from Black Magic cameras? What about Sony/Canon/Fuji cameras? I understand that you wouldn't have camera control through the software, but I'm specifically interested in the grade. Thanks!
@@geraldundone dang. Kind exposes another limitation of this all appearing as a single source in OBS. Your "global sharpening" scenario was illuminating. Went with a Decklink Duo instead in recent stream build to have full individual access to the cameras, using ffmpeg/ndi/nvenc to record ISOs.
