Great intro to Liverpool beaches. It's a shame you didn't go a little further out to Formby. That has one of the best dunescapes in the country as well as the beach itself.; the whole thing being backed by extensive pine forests and heathland, which are protected habitats for various amphibians and red squirrels.
Unfortunately on most beaches after busy days or reasonable days they bins are overflowing as they don’t empty them many times a day like in other countries or provide enough bins and people leave slot of rubbish
@@WalkWithMeTim Yeah as someone who has lived here for over 50 yrs I was surprised to find that New Brighton and West Kirby are in Liverpool, because all the Scousers love telling us we are not, and according to maps we aren't !
Thank you for an interesting and complimentay video of an often-mocked subject. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, being from Liverpool, every summer my parents would take us to one of these beeches for a day out. Formby and Ainsdale (beyond Crosby) were my favourites as they had the dunes and woods to run riot in. I think it was at Ainsdale that they also had parked a DUKW, so any young lad could re-enact D-Day; this was before the holiday camp was built. Going to the Wirral, however, was a real treat, but when at New Brighton, we were told not to paddle or bathe on the beach with the River Mersey because of pollution, but round the corner where the beach fronted the Irish Sea was safe. New Brighton then provided a great day out for the family as in addition to the small fairground you mentioned, it also had a large funfair complete with cable chairlift to the top of the New Brighton Tower Ballroom; all now gone. The town suffered a decline in the 1970s with the fairground being closed, the pier being demolished and the ferry from Liverpool being cancelled, but now seems to be prospering with the replacement Floral Pavilion theatre and the area around the Travel Lodge. West Kirby, however, seems not to have changed in fifty years. The marine lake around which you can walk (approximately 40 minutes to do a full circular route) has changed very little, though I recall that there was a small section reserved for young children to paddle in then, but now it seems to be exclusive to sailing club members. Walking round this lake at high tide on a windy day provides an eerie experience with water lapping at your feet from both directions
You forgot to mention New Brighton outdoor pool. the largest in Europe. Harrison Drive outdoor pool, around the corner from New Brighton. And Hoylake outdoor pool, just before you get to West Kirby. All now gone.
Makes me depressed that I live in Birmingham when I look at other places only water we have are canals with lots of graffiti along them and shopping trolleys in them. Liverpool area looks really amazing
The statues on Crosby Beach are called "Another Place" sculpture by the Artist Antony Gormley, the same Artist who was responsible for the "Angel of The North" sculpture.
@@Josh19998 What is the point of them? Liverpool is a seaport whose ships once went all over the world the statues are all facing out to sea like the ports ships and sailors. looking for another place to go. Well that is my understanding of gormley's exhibit.
I have always wanted to go and see those Gormley statues on that beach - so haunting. Antony Gormley used his own body as a model for the torso of the Angel of the North - probably his most famous work. As a nipper my auntie used to take me on a day out from Manchester to Liverpool then ferry across to New Brighton - great memories
Formby is definitely one to check out Tim but gets very busy. Nice nature reserve there too. Thanks for coming here, so many write the city off but you picked a great day and showed the beaches off beautifully👍
Great video Tim, I've walked out to Hilbre Island a few times over the years. There's an old abandoned lifeboat station there that you can look around. You get to some beautiful wildlife too. I can across a small octopus once in a rockpool. If you ever come back it's definitely worth checking out. Another place to visit is Thursaston Beach which isn't far from West Kirby. It's only a small but secluded beach with Thursaston Common on the cliffs overlooking the beach.
I was disappointed not to see Formby beach, as it’s one of Merseyside’s crowning jewels especially with the back drop of the dunes and pine Forrest full of red squirrels 🐿️
@@baylessnowneed to get off the main paths and wait. I go every so often to try spot one. Last 6 attempts - 3 no luck, 1 saw a squirrel but it disappeared into the woods before i could get a photo, 1 got a few poor photo's and 1 where the squirrel was just happy munching on pine cones so could get some nice pics.
Tim such a interesting place and such a huge beach with those statues. I haven’t seen anything like that before. Just amazing and so interesting. Beautiful area and a pretty day for your walk. Thanks Tim and keep on walking. You are doing a fabulous job.👏🏻☀️
An escape room is going to be put in Perch Rock and other improvements to New Brighton. A place really close to my heart. There is alot of bars and cafes in Victoria Road as well as art installations.
Hi Tim. I’ve visited all three of those beaches but I only live about 40 minutes away from West Kirby. Thanks for showcasing what Merseyside has to offer. Take care. Nick
Hi Tim , great vid , thanks for sharing !! I've been in Liverpool a couple of years ago , I've got because of the Beatles and all that staff , but I was surprised how beautiful is this city , now I discovered beautiful Beach too , again thanks for the vid !! Cheers!! 👍😊
thanks for doing this vlog.. brought back some happy childhood memories when growing up in the 70s in merseyside,.. not there anymore :( however I used to love going to New Brighton every other weekend on the ferry from the Liver buildings with my mates.. I remembered the outdoor baths you could spend all day there sunbathing too, mum used to make jam butties and we would all have our dinnner there.. good ole days. I am so happy its still a bustling and beautiful resort too, i would love to go back there one day. Other beautiful beaches close by but not as resorty are Ainsdale and Formby known for the miles of sand dunes.. we used to run up and down them all day long.... thanks keep up the good work Tim.
Been to all the islands as a child, people just don't realise how much there is to see and do in the area. Thanks for highlighting it Tim, love watching you and all the family.
I live up the coast in Formby, still Liverpool, the beaches and dunes are unreal, I can ride my beach fatbike for hours out of season without seeing a single person.
At Crosby you never mentioned the ",blitz" beach, thats as fascinating as the statute portion. I find this area very peaceful despite all the destruction it represents.
Yet again another fantastic video Tim, great insight into places I’ve never heard of. Also your lovely coverage of places give us an idea of how a wheelchair user may enjoy these places , thoroughly entertaining thanks 👍👌Andy🤓
Glad to see you back in the North West. Done those beaches and walked along the coast of the the Wirral in parts. Not yet been out to Hilbre but want to do so to see seals. Fingers crossed I'll get there soon. Great video I hope you enjoyed some Merseyside hospitality 👍👍
The Liverpool area has lots of beach. The Sefton coast north of the city stretches from Crosby where this video started and runs north through Formby all the way to Southport. It's more than just beach as well. You've got sand dunes and pine forest with great walks (and lots of red squirrels).
Hi. Just catching up on some of your videos and really enjoyed this one as we were in this area in October 2022, staying just outside West Kirby. We actually love the Liverpool area and the Wirral and have been a few times in the past. On our recent visit we traveled on Mersey Rail; to Chester, Liverpool and Southport. On the way to Southport we got off the train and walked to Crosby Beach to see the statues. We also drove to New Brighton and walked the promenade we found it to be an interesting place and great location for the view of the ships coming into the Mersey. The fort was open on our visit, we had a coffee in the cafe there.
Hi Tim, I watched your vid on Blackpool earlier & you were saying how tall the tower is. Well New Brighton once had a tower taller than Blackpool. It opened in 1900 but fell into disrepair during the first World War & was sadly dismantled. The tower ballroom still thrived & in the early 60s held concerts with the beatles before they became very famous. Little Richard headlined one night with the fab four there. Sadly the tower ballroom burnt down in 1969. Its called New Brighton because in the 1830s a developer wanted to create a popular seaside resort on the wirral hence the name 'New' Brighton. It was very successful & thousands of day trippers & holidaymakers visited & continued until the late 60s & 1970s when it fell into disrepair. Its lovely now again thanks to a lot of investment. By the way I live in west kirby & have often walked out to hilbre Island. Its famous for its grey seals & sea birds & waders. Thanks for the great video!
Never knew Liverpool has beaches Tim.Your videos are so professional, you deserve a career in TV,you'd make a first rate TV presenter.Thankyou for another interesting video.
Fantastic video tim myself and my partner love liverpool and heard of the beaches but never had a look in detail until ur excellent and stunning video beautiful natural landscapes so undisturbed a rarity these days thank you
Been following your video’s for a long time and have loved almost all of them. The only ones I haven’t enjoyed are the ones i am jealous of not having the chance to visit just yet lol. Well done on hitting the 100k subscribers, I am sure you will do 10x that with such great content. A big hello from me in Huddersfield. I have subscribed to help support your channel. All the best of luck, Trevor : )
Tim cannot watch live but been there it’s fab. Liverpool is amazing great night life amazing places to visit. I hope you got to visit the Baltic Triangle amazing lots of bars and stuff to do 😎
Great vid Tim , you make the place look real fancy 😂 I live here so know different but yes the coast is lovely ,my house is right on the waterfront just along the shore from New Brighton and we kinda have our own private beach and lake (it's not private just nobody knows about it) when the tide is out the whole Wirral peninsula is a beach from birkenhead to neston on the opposite side. I occasionally ride my dirt bikes all the way round on the sand when the sun is going down and it's amazing (illegal too) but hay I'm nearly fifty, not going hell for leather and the bikes road legal and when the tide is out I can be a mile away from anybody walking dogs . I did a video walking the wirral coastline fully loaded on the hottest day of the year a few years back , I'm not doing that again 😂 unlike mine this was a great vid though mate 👌
The 100 statues cost £2million thats £20,000 a pop. not bad for some scrap iron. The ones in London are not the ones on crosby beach, He made some more and who can blame him at that price
Thanks for a great vlog Tim and for showing there are nice parts to Liverpool 😁 Next time try around the Formby and Ainsdale area , Ainsdale also has a Pontins 🙈
Hi Tim, a bit of history from that beach. When I was a kid the old swimming pool looked like something from the Soviet Union with its brutalist architecture, very communist looking, but it was great inside and massive. It had to be demolished because it was sinking! Also on a clear day the views to North Wales are spectacular. I wish I'd known You were visiting as I'm only a mile away from that beach. Looking forward to Norfolk in May as You Know! Cheers....
used to love going to New Brighton as a kid and the outdoor swimming pool. think that blue building was where the indoor fairground was. shame to see the Queens shut did a few parties there.
When the tide goes out there some fantastic rock pools on the Mersey with lots of fish and crabs and even little octopus.....you must do a vid on Formby dunes and pinewoods mate....beautiful place
The art deco building is to be no more in a few years. The owner has sold it as he reckons the upkeep of the building costs too much to keep up with. It is to be replaced by flats/new arcade etc
Lived in New Brighton all my life, and I'm so grateful for it's recent changes. It's completely unrecognisable to what it was 10 years ago, and it's so much better than it used to be. It's been an absolute privilege to grow up in, thanks for showing it and the area off! :)
So true it really needed it after they shut the out door bath years ago They just let it run down but I love going there with the kids now the fair beach go crabbing and there different restaurants and thing to do
I’m not from the UK. Loved the beaches in New Brighton when I was a kid in the early 80s. Had family there. Edit: There also used to be an great outdoor pool or baths but was destroyed in a storm in the 90s.
@@denisereynolds2399 Remember in the mid 80s when granada tv filmed 'New Brighton rock'? A concert at the baths where frankie goes to hollywood mimed to two tribes, the first time they sung it before it went to No1 for 9 weeks! Other acts included nick kershaw, madness, spandau ballet & Gloria gaynor.
I live in New Brighton Wirral and have lived in the Wirral all my life, The views and beaches we have here are incredible. I have been to Crosby beach many times too and see the statues. The Fort in New Brighton is now open with a cafe. The Queens Royal has been closed for a little while now, I did use to work there. The Arcades use to have Go Karts and was a massive attraction for the area, I use to work there too. Thank you for viewing our little peninsula, I love living here.
I remember the arcades (art deco building) before it had Go Karts in there. A lot more of the floor space was used. It had dodgems, electric Go Karts, a ghost train, Bobby horses aka carousel, one of those rides with space ships/planes on them with joystick inside, if you pulled it the plane went up and down when you pushed it forward. That lovely building may be getting knocked down soon according to one of the chippy owners from one of the back streets away from the 'front'. Something to do with drainage needing to be brought up to standard but the owner can't afford it.
If you decide to visit any of the beaches in the video and are staying in Livepool you can get to any of them using the merseyrail network from central or moorfields stations in the city center. The Iron men are on Crosby beach but you should get off the train at Waterloo and turn left out of the station the beach is a short walk away the train you need will have a final destination of Southport and is on the Northern line. To visit New Brighton and West Kirby you need to use the Wirral line and both these beaches are the final detinations on the trains you need. ask for an all areas saveaway ticket and you can use it for multiple journeys all day for around £6-7 . Also a word of warning if you decide to go to West Kirby make sure get the train on the wirral line rather than the train to Kirkby on the northern line or you will end up several miles inland in one of the new town suburbs of Liverpool.
I have just checked and the tickets cost £5.65 for an adult and £2.90 for a child for the all areas saveaway, this not only covers the trains but can also be used on the buses and the mersey ferry so real bargain
I've walked out to Hilbre a number of times. In relation to your comment about the age of the rocks, they are part of the Sherwood Sandstone Formation, lower Triassic about 250 million years. Roughly about the dawn of the dinosaur's.
Just watched your video Tim was out this afternoon nice beach if looks funny with statues on it hope you all have a nice holiday when you go to tenarife
The weird brown building you mention and ask "I wonder what that building is" presumably because it is so ugly and yet in a prime position blocking the view used to be an amusement arcade in the 1980s, I used to ride my bike 10 miles each way to go there and play on one of Wirral's only two Gorf machines (the other in the Birkenhead Silverstrike was always busy). Why such an ugly building was ever built only the council knows but I guess not much was being built in the late 1970s. Also there is a funny part of Chris Boardman's authobiography (the olympic cyclist) where he talks about how he was so obsessed with cycling when he was at school in West Kirby (Hilbre High) and all the other kids thought he was a bit of a nutter as cycling wasn't cool then, but there was one other kid in the school who was despised even more than him....and his name was Daniel Craig who he would see wandering around west kirby and hoylake beaches as he rode past. The first episode of the Netflix series CReeped Out was filmed partly at Perch Rock.
Hi from West Kirby! I’ve walked many times to Hilbre island and paddle boarded there as well, even today took a powerboat there! Hope you sampled the fish and chips in west kirby as well!
New Brighton born and bred. You should have said you can walk on the beach right across the Wirral north coast from New Brighton, all the way to West Kirby.
West Kirby and New Brighton aren’t actually Liverpool, and are on the Wirral , over the other side of the Mersey, but we’re all classed as Merseyside. Liverpool is a fantastic city
I challange you to go to Southport, (about 45 mins up the coast) when the tide is out, (not that it comes 'in' very often!) and walk to the waters edge. Tip: Take a packed lunch with you!
I've got to say you missed some of the prettier beaches in Merseyside. Formby and Thurstaston are beautiful. Hilbre Island is lovely too, its got some cool looking coves and seals. Did you honestly not walk further?!
Fair enough! If you haven't been it's definitely worth a visit. I don't know of anywhere else in the North West with seals. They're surprisingly friendly too
Mum had nothing but bad memories of New Brighton from a disastrous trip there in 1973. I was there but don't remember. A combo of landlady from hell and rain. She was pleasantly surprised today 🙂
The unusual, round building you spotted, is on the site of the former entrance to New Brighton Pier. A ferry would travel to and fro' to Liverpool Pier Head every hour; Most famously the "Royal Iris".
This has just came up on my you tube…. Didn’t know you did this… crazy golf is great at New Brighton . My daughter lives at Hoylake right by the beach… it’s lovely… such a great video. There is an amazing chip shop at West Kirby
Thanks for That Tim! Like many people maybe, I didn’t realise that Liverpool had beaches! May check that out in the summer. How Far is Crosby from Main Liverpool?
Used to be the Golden sands of New Brighton, until the relevant council with the power installed groynes and, within six months they'd all washed away, (back in the middling part of the 20c.).
@@benpenguin7382 Liverpool City Region - why are you being so pedantic, like a little Englander? Maybe you should stay away from Sefton and Wirral if it upsets you so much
We used to go to New Brighton on bank holidays in the 1960s There were ferry boats that went there from Liverpool. Loved it. Thousands of people would go. Sadly it was all left to go to ruin, like so much in Merseyside. New Brighton declined much like Great Yarmouth did. Fort Perch Rock was a massive amusement arcade, so probably it is much better now. Story I heard as a kid was that New Brighton beach was damaged by the Mersey being dredged.
Most of the problem came as tidal flow was altered when the Seaforth container terminal was created and longshore drift took the sand further north. It was rectified in the seventies by the building of groynes at Hoylake and West Kirby. Gradually the power of the tides was reduced and sand returned to the beaches there. Sadly, too late to stop the inexorable decline of New Brighton in the seventies. Incidentally, when I got off the train at Camberley, in Surrey in the late sixties, I spotted a rail poster advertising New Brighton as "The Place to Go!" 🎠🎡
1964-66 We were Mods who went up to Manchester to the Twisted Wheel all-nighter on Saturdays during the Summer. Sunday morning we all went from Manchester back to Liverpool and on to West Kirkby, catch the tide and get marooned on Hilbre with plenty of doo dah to aid 'the landing'. Bronzies all round, safe from interference by the meanies.
