Great memories. Was there for all the Grand Nationals from 1974-88. Much closer racing on the asphalt than I remembered. Even with production car sixes racing V8s a lot more side-by-side compared to current day late models racing on the dirt.
Can anyone tell me what made the sweet smell with the Grand National Sedans especially in the early 80's? Sprintcars on methanol seemed to burn your eyes later on, but the Grand Nationals had a really distinct sweet smell to them. I have heard that is was some Castrol oil. If it was, was it in the fuel or in the engine sump?
I used to love it when ever I saw the #98 get a win. I would "be there" every Saturday night that I could, and a lot of the time, I'd be at Parramatta City Raceway on the Friday night, as it was run back then, depending on how far my apprentice's wage could take me. Great days, that I'll always remember with great fondness. On a side note, I noticed that the late, great Grenville Anderson didn't do at all well at Liverpool, and always wondered if he was ever comfortable racing on the asphalt as opposed to the dirt or clay tracks where he really did stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Like a mini version of NASCARs. Great stuff, I was there for the 100 lappers. I love dirt but gee the racing was close on the tar. Made it very exciting.
