Great hectic 100mph game with moments of class. That Arsenal defence, including Seaman, was one of the best ever. Who knew it was the start of the long 30 year wait...
For a team that was slipping/declining,they still played beautifully, really sad they didn’t win the league that season. In a matter of 6 months they were barely recognisable under Souness. The defence was crumbling, the signs were there against Everton the in 4-4 draw.
The high point of the George Graham era at Arsenal. This was David Seaman's first season at Arsenal. Seaman was superb all season ( except the 2 slight mistakes from Gascoinge and Lineker in the first FA cup semi-final v Spurs @ Wembley) and from 1990 up until 1996 (when he sustained a collar bone injury from Ole gunnar solskjaer at Old Trafford in an unlucky 1-0 defeat) was one of the greatest goal keepers ever ( minus his small mistake in the 1995 European cup winners cup final in Paris ). Up there with the great Pat Jennings and Ray Clemance.
Ronnie and Steve missing in midfield we just couldn’t plug the gaps I definitely think had Kenny stayed he would’ve got it right and history would’ve been very different .
I agree with you. I think the defence was in big decline too. The tell tale sign of this was the 4-3 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace in the 1990 semi final. Shame Kenny didn’t get given a six month sabbatical/ deal over paid period. The decline started here. Y N W A
vrs010 Yes I agree I also think Letting John Aldridge Nigel Spackman go and or not Replacing them started the rot Speckman could’ve gone on for another few years and Aldridge is a class act .game against Palace Highlighted our strength in depth especially when rush went off at half time
@@vrs010 The Liverpool defence was never the same after Hansen and Mark Lawrence retired. This was shown in 1989/90, were they were quite leaky in defence with Grobbelar letting some absolute howlers at times.
l do actually think that kenny genuinely knew that liverpool were now on the decline. and there was nothing else he could've done to stop it. That's part of the reason why he resigned
The departure of Daglish was so strange especially since he rocked up to Ewood Park literally months later. Do any Liverpool fans know if he asked for a temporary leave of absence first, or did he just quit? Seems like all he really needed was a break.
From an interview with Noel White, who was chairman at the time, the club asked him to consider having a break rather than quitting completely. He wanted a clean break, presumably as he would still have been feeling responsible for what was happening while he was away. In one of his books Kenny said he would have been ready to return to the job within a few months, but unfortunately Souness had been appointed by that time.
@@DaveWallerLFC people do leave Liverpool football club. Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush , I’m pretty sure he was on more money at Blackburn than what he was at Liverpool. Walker took over in January and you played Blackburn in January. It’s absolutely not far-fetched. People like new challenges.
People do leave Liverpool for money or a new challenge. They generally don't do it citing mental pressures at least partly due to a disaster. You're saying he lied, and continues to lie, about the reasons for his departure which seems fairly insulting in my view.
Although a bad result and was possibly the start of the end of the era - or so how it felt - this is a great video. Love this channel. Although not our finest season; do you, by chance, have the 1991/92 season review?
Thanks for your comment. I do have the 1991/92 season review. I've never been that keen to relive the Souness era which is why I haven't uploaded it, despite a couple of other people asking. Maybe I'll feel different if we win the league...
Dave Waller I totally understand but, speaking selfishly, it’s the season missing from my collection. If you can convert VHS to DVD then I’d be more than happy to buy it from you? Anyway, thank you for the channel; really enjoy it. Also, love your modesty of ‘if’ we win the league! 😀
I probably will upload it in a couple of weeks. There are sites where you can buy DVDs of old football videos. If you don't want to wait let me know and I can send you a link.
Think the signing of Hysen, while it looked very good at the time, turned out not to be a good signing: he was great at playing a sweeper role in a back five, in Italian or at International level, but he didn’t have the pace to be a centre half in a back four in Division one…as time went on, it became more frequent for him to be totally caught out by an opposing forward or winger who had pace…
Merson scored the goal that ended liverpools time at top of english football Liverpool never came close to winning the league again for decades This game ended liverpools time at top of english football, they became a cup team, that did not challenge for the league again for decades Kenny dagleish just resigned from liverpool just before this, and no one knows why, no explanation ever was told, he just walked out of the club.
Almost none of this is true. Liverpool were top of the league 3 weeks after this game, when Liverpool and Arsenal had both played 29 games. Liverpool taking 1 point from the next 3 games meant Arsenal were back on top, but this game didn't end the time at the top. Not sure how long your "decades" commeent means, but Liverpool were in contention for the league title in 1995/96, 1996/97, 2001/02, 2008/09 and 2013/14; narrowing missing out each time. There was a press conference announcing Kenny Dalglish's resignation on 22 February 1991 where he explained his reasons. He didn't just walk out with no explanation. At the time he described the pressure he was putting himself under in his desire to be successful, which meant that he had pushed himself to the limit as a person. It has subsequently emerged that the psychological impact of the Hillsborough disaster was the main reason.
15:26 Gary Lineker (on David Hillier): "Looks a very good player Brian, he seems to be comfortable on the ball, doesn't seem to be overawed at all by the occasion, and...I think he could be a very useful asset for Arsenal" 🤣🤣🤣 Now, we understand why Lineker presents MOTD and is not the pundit! As an Arsenal fan, I can tell you we've had our fair share of crap players, but Hillier is in a class by himself, the class of being a crap player who managed 100+ games 😂💀
Hi Dave, at the beginning of the live broadcast, there was a piece on Kenny resigning narrated by Elton Welsby about the title not being finalised today but the winners will be favourites. Did you by chance have that in this version?
Hi. No, sorry. My copy is just the game (and the DVD is faulty, so not even all the game). I remember an interview with Peter Beardsley where he had no problems with Kenny, apart from not being picked enough, so it would be nice to see the full broadcast with this and the intro you mentioned. I expect this does exist.
