I was at the game and remember thinking the Reds would win after the good start. Smolarek was a great little player. Was pleased to see Smolarek Jnr playing in Euro2008....brought back memories of his old man in the 1983 game. The applause from the Kop at the end was deserved. Rarely saw teams taking games on at Anfield as well as Lodz did.

I remember now that Kenny was out for this match. His absence, Souness's rare mistake and Bruce's dropped cross in the 1st leg cost LFC dear. The Poles went out to Juventus in the semis. Cheers again Dave.

I was in the stands that night, and a collective groan went through the crowd when it was announced that Kenny wasnt playing, the slip by Souness just demonstrated the strength and quality of some european sides, one slip and in a few passes, the ball is in the back of the net, or you have conceded a penalty.

@@DavidSmith-fs5qj Poland had a very good team. Did very well in the 1974 world cup, 1978 and 1982. East European teams could very very tough. Sadly not the case much today after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc -and in the modern game where all the talent is now concentrated at the very top leagues. I use love some of their teams. Tbilsi and Kipiani in 1979 were brilliant and knocked possibly our greatest team out. Red Star were a joy in 1991 in getting to the final. Yugoslavia 1998 were good to watch. Dynamo Kiev too and USSR in 1986 and 1988.

Did Smolarek also compete in diving at the Olympic Games? I think the Poles tried to match their quickest men up against Neal and Kennedy and it worked to an extent. Liverpool beat another Polish side Lech Poznan 5-0 on aggregate en route to the 1985 European Cup final v Juventus , the occasion of the Heysel disaster, of course.

I was a wee toddler when this was on…This was also Sir Bob Paisley’s final season as Liverpool manager…He should’ve stayed on till 1990

The reception Lodz received at the end was pretty famous at the time. I think a few Lodz players literally collapsed in tears. It created a huge Liverpool following in Poland and Lodz fans would write to the club for years after about it (which the club would print in the programme).

Many thanx for uploading. By far ive only watched pieces with a Polish commentary. Interesting to hear the English version of things. I was 11 at that time and watching the game being all a bunch of nerves. Such was that experience that ive become a fervant supporter of Widzew from that time(though much much Closer i had Lech Poznań for example) best regards for fans of the mighty Liverpool FC from Poland

Side note - to capture the times New Order's 'Blue Monday' hit the charts the week after this. Mancs I know blah blah (always liked in our city though) but for me the greatest song ever. Hearing that song for the first time completely blew me away and still does. Music from another world. The Bunnymen's Porcupine album was #2 in the charts - I love that album and U2 played Royal Court around this time as well. Such a great time musically. Footy had its place - no wonder we missed the match.

I remember me & my mates going up on the night to try & get in but it was a lock out. When they opened the gates of the Kop 15 mins before the end we all got in & I remember the Hodgson goal.

This game bcos we went out is always overlooked but I can tell you now the atmosphere was something else, we would have gone through if it wernt for a rare slip by souness, widzew Lodz were not a great side but we beat ourselves unfortunately !

It had been raining throughout the day and the steam coming off the fans in a packed Kop was mesmerising.

Very painful memories...almost as galling as the Chelsea FA Cup defeat in 82 :-(

it was the 2-0 in Poland and the 2 goals at Anfield that cost Liverpool hence the 4-3 on aggregate

Good evening Sir David Waller, The Duke of RU-vid. If you can get your hands on the Liverpool v Arsenal, 1979 Charity Shield game. That would be wonderful. Can't find any worth while genuine highlights.

I'm not sure "Duke" is a compliment at the moment, so hopefully that wasn't meant as an insult. I do have highlights of that game, but I'm going to finish the 1982/83 highlights before uploading anything else.

@@DaveWallerLFC Hi David. Is Duke an internet or social network insult? I'm 51yrs old and I'm not into any latest online memes or words, both positive and negative but I sincerely apologies if it made you think if it was an insult. I wouldn't dare insult a gentleman like you who has given so much pleasure to tens of thousands of fellow RU-vidrs with so much unselfish effort in uploading classic football footage on here. These past twenty years have been quite difficult and I live with PTSD and insomnia, and your videos have given me immense late night pleasure and wonderful joy and I have WhatsAppd your videos to friends my age and especially to my nephews so they can truly know what it looks like seeing an all conquering team like Liverpool football club. Your work is much appreciated and most valued by me and many members of my family and friends. Your RU-vid channel deserves to have a membership of 100,000 plus subscribers and I intend to spread your superb channel to the various Liverpool RU-vid fan clubs. That is the least I can do for you as a show of thanks and appreciation.

@Noblemann I was just thinking that the most high profile Duke at the moment is the one that's about to go on trial. But it was flippant to think you might have meant it as an insult. I'm sorry to hear about your PTSD and insomnia. I hope things get better for you soon. If the videos I've uploaded are any help that's humbling and very nice to hear. Thank you for your kind comments. Please don't go out of your way on my behalf. I will upload the 1979 Charity Shield highlights when I've finished the 1982/83 games.
