Agree with you, I am originally from the Philippines and finished my college in Canada in the 70's decided to stay and have a Family in Canada and when I compared myself to those who stayed in lived in the Philippines, I am more jealous that I wished I had stayed because of the culture, the way of life and that is the only regret I found in life. Material things that we have accumulated does not make us happy. It is the people and not the material things that makes you happy......

@@Telfund38154172 You are absolutely correct. I was 10 years old when my parents and I immigrated to Winnipeg in late 1974. Worst possible place and time to arrive in Canada. When I became an adult I stayed and settled in Northern Ontario. When my parents retired they left us kids and moved to Florida. It is -40 celsius outside and sometimes I wonder what madness made me stay here. Now I am too old to go back to the old country. My wife and kids, and grand-kids, are utterly clueless about my previous life before we came to Canada. No one around me speaks my dialect, or even Tagalog or English, as I live in a Franco Ontarian community. I feel like I'm going extinct.

Unfortunately the Philippines today has a huge environmental issue with garbage, specifically plastics. It is the largest disposer of plastics in SE Asia.. Much of it goes in the ocean. Your lovely Palawan holds a dark secret of microplastics and nylon fishing lines in the ocean, killing Turtles and other sea life. Also coral in the area. Conde Naste didn't go diving there I guess. If people don't stop dumping garbage in rivers and ocean, your beautiful land will be in for a shock. Stop using and dumping plastics. Also the government needs to provide better garbage disposal, especially in the Provinces and more organized dump sites.

I worked and volunteer in the late 80's and early 90's there. Public health and social services, including population commission has regular visits to the poorest communities. Health and sex education, free vaccinations and birth controls are being offered. Church has a role but it's a free country. Education in grade school middle school, high schools are free with some minor fees, there's colleges and universities funded by the governments. I for one has half tuition plus scholarships offered. It's not what you all think of Philippines being a ghetto.

Yes!! The Philippines is wonderful and full of beautiful people and places. I have visited 18 times and hope to live there someday. It is my home away from home. I have many squatter friends and they are just as beautiful and nice as the wealthy people. If any foreigner watch’s this and doesn’t want to visit we don’t need them there are many foreigners who know how great the Philippines is! ♥️🇵🇭♥️🇵🇭❤️🇵🇭❤️

The number one reason of poverty in the Phil's is graft and corruption and bad governance, and the natural and human catastrophies. There are at least 16 supertyphoons a year. The big population is now a blessing in this soon to be depopulated world- China, Germany, Japan, Korea, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Thailand, etc...countries like the Phil's will be the salvation of depopulated world in terms of labor, humanizing and care. The problem of this documentary is that it only looks at the underside/bad side of the country. It is done after one cursory visit, one interview, thus it is a very shallow one with no insights and understanding. Even the wrong pronunciation of places is very irritating - and disrespectful. Violence and deaths in the Phil's is child's play, compared to the 100 million of deaths caused by world war 1 and 2- in 50 years in Europe, the hundreds of millions deaths in Russia/China, and the US. I suggest that this shallow guy live at least 10 years in the Phil's before he even writes a one sentence. And he has missed the humor, the resilience and happiness of the Filipinos, inspite of.

A Very good documentary

The indigenous have to agree when there is a public or private development. If they dont want it, the national government cannot do anything about it. The area featured is one of the most difficult to build roads as well. In Philippines, we also have a problem with encroachment to areas that there should be no people living, but ofc they are already there. Maybe the government can build cable cars, tho expensive, so it will be easier to encourage teachers to work there. Family planning ways such as pills and even contraceptive implant are free in most public clinics. I know this as my employees had free contraceptive implants. Therefore, It is a choice of people to have more children, mostly ingrained in religious belief. A child is not always a blessing, esp if you are already poor, but no matter what class in Philippines, I can hear people saying that a child is a gift from God, even tho it is their choice or irresponsibility that child, who have no choice, was born. It is just sad that a child suffers, esp in a poor family.

It might be slow but at least our country is making progress.

Did you really think 40 years of American colonization would teach the Filipinos about Democracy? Filipinos likely learned the language of Democracy but I don't think they have really understood the concept. For instance, how does one explain the nepotism that is rampant in local politics? An Uncle (in the Philippines) once told me all countries are corrupt at some level. Unfortunately Philippine corruption is in a league of its own; Filipinos flaunt it and even brag about it.

In the city there's public and private hospitals besides the city's public health that has a regular check up and vaccinations to the poorest community. It's not what all you think as a ghetto. There's a government, laws and social services for the communities.

The author is focusing on the poverty. We don't see it as poverty. We see it as life. If you find what's bad for the country you will find it all over the world. Have you seen him showing the progress of the country? I didn't see any. Go see my island Iloilo City. It's 7,600+ islands. Some are poor some are progressive. Same in USA and maybe GB or some European countries.

@@suskagusip1036 My good friend lives in the Philippines with his wife and 2 kids and loves it there. They had a typhoon last year that did a lot of damage yet in crisis they all pulled together and helped each other, the families are very tight knit. I made a go fund me for them explaining how they lost everything with a baby due in a month and asked for donations big or small, even just a Starbucks coffee amount, and one person out of hundreds of friends made a donation. It was really kind of deflating. Imagine losing everything you had, home, stuff, internet was down, etc. I was embarrassed for my country. We are a spiritually bankrupt country.

Hopefully your friend and his family can pull it together. Be aware of some scams there too. There's poor but there's also middle class and millionaires too. It's not all what you see in this video. There are hundreds of thousands of OFWs all over the world. There is a very good reason why perhaps millions of Filipinos leave the Philippines. And for the most part they are successful. It is the oligarchs back in the Philippines that are stifling productivity. So long as these oligarchs are around Philippines will continue to be a third rate third world country.

You are right, the the "servant's mentality" is perpetuated by the Oligarchs and the Catholic Church. These two institutions continue to propagate the lie that there is something to be proud in being Filipino per se. That is akin to being proud for being ... Caucasian or Chinese. Proud of who you were born. Where I am they call that racism. Filipinos do deserve to be proud of themselves, but they have to leave the Philippines to achieve such pride. They deserve to be proud when they accomplished something for themselves and their families because of their hard work or talent. In the Philippines, a lot of these so called pride revolves around who they are rather than whey they did.
