The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection: Volume 1 | Important Pictures and Decorative Arts launches the landmark series of four live auctions and six online auctions devoted to this outstanding collection this fall. This evening sale introduces many cornerstones of the rich and varied collection - featuring works by Canaletto, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Jean-Étienne Liotard, Jacques-Émile Blanche, Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Édouard Manet, Henri Matisse and more. Watch this exceptional sequence of Old Masters, Nineteenth-Century Art and Impressionist Drawings and Paintings appear in concert with masterpieces of English and European furniture by Vile, Chippendale, Grendey and more. All sale proceeds benefit The Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation for the Arts to support various arts and science organizations.

It’s disappointing the artwork being auctioned is not shown during the auction. At least in the lower corner like Sotheby’s.

Oh, those birds are fabulous for a room with very high ceilings, they are so whimsical and humorous, if money is no object I would have bid as high as needed to get them.

Gordon & Ann Getty had the material life but their personal lives were a mess. We know now Gordon had a second family for 14 years that produced three daughters out of wedlock. No amount of material items would give me peace of mind if I was Ann Getty.

What I don’t get is that Gordon had all of this and yet still had a secret family not far away…..who has time for that? Only someone with time on their hands. And he’s lost two sons….excess seems to be a bad thing….

the artwork deserved every penny it got. But the textiles and mantels and linens fetched way too much. The auction did so well with so many good quality knick knacks it seems. I totally did not understand her style-it was so mixed

They specialize in scams. They took my artwork and sold it, and I didn't get anything. They even closed my account.

They are the Getty's of Getty Oil that negotiated with the Saudi's in the early 1900s for the right to 1/2 of Saudi Arabia's oil production. This they sold, in the early 1980s, to Chevron. The other half went to the Rockefeller's Standard Oil.

This type of opulence is really obscene. For the Gettys and other people to value tchotchkes more than anything else is really a turn off. In the end all these material items at auction don’t mean a thing. It’s just stuff. The Getty house looked like it was a hoarder’s house with item after item everywhere.

I think it’s a difference in aesthetics. She was very obviously a maximalist in a world that is now very minimal.. I don’t think it’s obscene, but it is very remarkable. The taste and knowledge of history and art is truly at a museum level. The only tragedy or crime is that all the items and the house were not kept together. This house should be a landmark and museum open to the public.

Obscene for good. That is not just tchotchkes. That is indicator of status so the items mean a thing. Hoarder's is hoarder's. Hoarder's must be carefully guarded, otherwise the items (decorative or functional) will not mean a thing. I will visit San-Francisco, I promise.
