Living a Minimalist Nomad Life to Save Money ~ My Financial Struggle

I was BROKE! Because of my financial struggles, I became a minimalist in 2008. Living a minimalist lifestyle has taught me that living with less helps me save money. Being over 40 and just turning 50, I was getting close to retirement age and needed to increase the money saved. My husband and I decided to sell everything we owned and embark on living a nomadic lifestyle. A minimalist nomadic lifestyle is not easy. However, I save money for retirement and have found that living with less is a key to my happiness. Nomad life over 40, and extreme minimalism is the choice I’ve made to save money.

My husband and I decided to change our life by selling our house in Canada and becoming nomadic almost three years ago. We now own a small place in Mexico where we can live simply and a camper van in Canada to explore North America in summer. We also housesit and enjoy the adventures that brings as well. I have learned to need very little and am very, very happy with less.

I did this, enjoying the freedom and lack of responsibility, then I got diagnosed with cancer and that need for stability and security were overwhelming. To get a place and unravel my nomadic world took time and energy I didn't have. I have secured a tiny apartment and realise that truly life happens whilst we make other plans. A contingency is a must for such things always.

My husband and I moved our family from an expensive area cross country to a defunct Birch farm on northern Lake Michigan. It is like our fresh start. He has a new job here and has has recenty started a microgreens farm side hustle that is doing so well, he is building a green house now to supply year round local produce, very much in demand with grocers, restaurants, and caterers. The kids have an acreage to tear up, and a pond to hunt frogs in. There is a glamping cabin that came on the back end with the property as well as a farm house. It's not fancy but the kids have loved helping to care for our chickens... We might start a UPick orchard soon for seasonal tourists. So far so good. We're still trying to fit all the old junk into the new farmhouse... Or have a giant yard sale for it - So a work in progress, but moving forward fearlessly - because with the sale of our old expensive home, we could pay cash for this one. No mortgage! This we hope will become a generational property we can develop for extensions of our family... I love vlogs like yours that show the simple beauty of living closer to nature than concrete! Living it with you as we dream!

We sold our home and bought a 5th wheel RV . We traveled across our country and saw wondrous places that would not have been possible had we stayed in our house. Sometimes we work camped to ‘get ahead’. Our health and age (82 and 75) has stopped our traveling. We live near our children and still live in our RV. I’ve no desire for a house, but we are home

That is an amazing story. So many of us went through a very similar scenario in 2008. I became a single mother of three children that year, and I lost my job and almost lost our townhome, but managed somehow to forge ahead. These experiences build resilience and allow us to hone in on the things that are most important to us, so the lessons learned you can say are worth the struggles! What a fascinating adventure to you are on now the world freely - it sounds amazing. Very inspiring!😊

I can empathize with the heavy feeling in the household, my parents were both unemployed at the same time. It was the late 1960's. Life was hard, but my parents just kept going. We had to eat stuff we didn't like, only had a few outfits, etc. etc. Eventually, my parents found work, and we moved to a less than desirable apartment that Mom and Dad kept spotless. I can only look back in admiration at their resilience. RIP Daddy.

We all usually go through a breaking point in one way or another and when we eventually get through it we are usually wiser and stronger in one way or another our life’s remind me of the broken china teapot a treasured possession it was never used for tea again but it was clued back together by its owner and used as a plant 🌱 pot which was put on display to be admired by many but when used as a teapot it was only put on display and used once a year on Christmas Day’ life can be different after circumstances but so much more beautiful and meaningful thank you Connie for this lovely video

It is a shame that you had to go through all that debt and financial struggle to get to minimalism, but it is good you went through them because it got you to where you are now. It taught you so much. I am really glad that happened for you. You are a long time minimalist like me (I started in 2006). There aren't many of us out there. I feel most became minimalists about 4-7 years ago, from what I have seen around the net. I LOVE that you sold EVERYTHING you own to travel. That is so amazing. I did that when I started initially and am sure we'll do such a thing when empty nesters too. I loved your story. This was also a lovely video. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Lovely video.... my husband and I are severely paring down. Right now living in a rental my son bought. Not sure how nomadic we will become, but are having our Visa appt. for moving to Portugal soon. He is applying for Italian citizenship, so may move to Italy after that. We are taking it one day at a time and only keeping 2 Tansu chests and few boxes of mementos in case we move back to the U.S. down the line. It is cathartic to pare down our lives to a few boxes. Maybe at some point, we may even let those things go too.

A meal we made was egg rice. Take cooked rice in a frying pan. Butter and good heat onions and seasoning you can get a delicious meal. If you have meat like bacon or something else that you removed bones from and it's going to taste better in egg rice. Heat pan add oil/butter,add onion and green onion,meat, after you get Onion clear glazed add rice you want rice fairly hot add fold your beater eggs and don't let them stick. Can add cheese or salsa,I like to add taco bell packets if I have any handy. They TB like to add a little extra if you ask .

I understand wanting to be debt free and living frugally. Makes sense. It is a relief and feels freeing. My husband and I are in our early 60’s debt free, some savings. However how do you earn income to sustain your nomadic lifestyle? That’s the part that throws us off. We currently rent, (never owned a home) and are both self employed with not retirement. So still a financial struggle to me financially independent.

It’s the LOVE of $ that is the root of all evil. Not so much $ itself. But same story for me as a kid. We always had food and shelter, but not a lot left over. I found that I worry about $ whether I have it or not, which tells me that much of my financial struggles are rooted in fear. Simplicity is a good thing.

I found it really interesting that having watched your parents that you ended up in so much debt (Not a judgement, I've just watched different friends from different back grounds are how our natural approach to money can be so different.) I think some is inherent personality (I grew up in a family with 3 siblings and we all spend / approach money/stuff differently) and some is learnt/influenced. If there was scarcity at home I can understand a drive to hoard, etc.. I wonder as your children are adults now, how they view money / stuff.
@lindastangelo1636
@lindastangelo1636 13 дней назад
Your comment is interesting. My mother raised 6 children on her own without a $ from my father. She struggled and we, too, did not have a lot growing up. My oldest sister still cannot go into a store and come out empty-handed. I tend to be much more frugal with my spending. I have 4 brothers and it varies with a couple being like my sister and one more like me and yet another made a lot of money but doesn't go insane with spending. We are all across the board, you might say...😂 I just have to say now I am becoming a minimalist and will probably be that way the rest of my life.

Are you using Airbnb, hostels, or some other type of housing option to keep costs low? I’ve been nomadic in the states for 3 yrs now, but I would like to travel Europe. Any tips would be appreciated!

Kudos to you for what you have dealt with due to NO fault of your own as I am a 51 single male who is dealing with similar struggles. I wear clothes until I have to discard them and I don't buy anything that is not needed. God Bless you and your family.

Connie how did you like tiny house living. My husband and I are retiring at the end of next month and selling our home and things. We too want to travel the world and thinking the tiny house could be our home to come back to when we are here to be with family.
