I love Michelle and her videos, I do. I have watched and rewatched her old videos again and again because I love them so much. However, I recently realised that Michelle’s content is not showing us the full picture. I came across some pictures of Michelle on Instagram with some friends over having a party (I believe the kimbap party a few weeks back), some of which she even hid from her own tagged photos. And they were wild - it showed a drastically different side of her that we never seen before, there were so many people in that gathering and 8 out of 10 never appeared in her vlogs or introduced to us. While I understand that she would like to keep certain aspects of her life private and I’m glad she’s having fun, for some reason it made me feel a little betrayed because of her unauthenticity. Perhaps it’s because of the relatability of her content thus far which make her viewers truly feel like they’re her close friend in real life - finding out that the life she’s been living in reality is so different from the one she’s portraying through her videos is pretty disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I know that RU-vidrs are not our friends and they don’t owe us anything - but I do believe that we should treat them like so if this is the relationship they purport to want to build with their followers. (Remember how she talked about feeling like we are her friends and she can talk to us and share things through the camera?) The nature of Michelle’s videos is that she want us to feel like it’s normalised to be an introvert, to do things alone and independently, to be ok having just a few friends and loving what you do. Finding out that she’s the opposite and what she’s portraying/her real self may not be aligned to the image that she’s put up for us is honestly so so so upsetting. I’d rather Michelle just show us the full picture instead of trying to curate her image to portray a certain vibe. Before you dismiss this as a ‘hate’ comment, read the very first sentence again. I love Michelle and I’m sure her content has brought about so much comfort within all of us in the community. Yet it was quite a let down as I truly thought Michelle was different from other RU-vidrs - but at the end of the day she may just turn out to be another content creator. I hope you can do better, Michelle.
