Living and Working Abroad in Budapest: My Experience 

Hi! Thank you for sharing your perspective. I completely understand your point about the impact digital nomads can have on local rent prices and the cost of living. It's an important issue in many countries. Since I stayed there for a short period, it would have been very difficult to actually rent an apartment. However, while there, I made an effort to support local restaurants, cafes, co-working spaces, and visit tourist attractions. I appreciate you bringing this up. I've discussed this topic with locals and it has made me more mindful, for sure!

@@SabrinaArnoldVlogs get groups together to get gov to cancel digital nomads and oyher lower income foreigners so rents stabilize.. rich, golden visas add to the economy, i for one considering it woukd hire full time house keeper, shopper as i am senior and cleaning agency once week. i will not be competing with anyone in country and would invest huge amount into government bonds to save me tax, but helping Hungary. These low income bloggers, digital nomads are not much better then open borders.

-Yes we are, Budapest is a global city, in the city center foreigners are actually the majority living there. University students or people with degrees are especially open to foreigners and most of the time they speak english. Also hungarians are very hospitable, nice and warm people (we just hate ourselves...) -As an educated middle eastern expat you will not have much or any discrimination i think especially in Budapest, but countrywide neither... Seeing and interacting with middle eastern people is an everyday occurence in this city. BUT Since 2015/2016 there is a bit of a "restlessness" (idk what the correct world is) towards muslim migrants. The thing is when the migration crisis started after the Syrian civil war our country did not take any refugees, and built a fence on the southern border to not let them in. Accompany this our government started a political campaign. They basically put up bilboards that said things in hungarian like: If you come to our country you have to respect our culture, you cant take hungarian people's jobs, did you know that the parisian terror attacks were done by migrants, did you know that roughly 300 people died in terror attack since the migration started etc... But Budapest is very against the ruling party so people dont care. Also it was like almost ten years ago so people do not care as much in general i think... People here tend to dislike those muslim migrants who they percieve bring economic, cultural and social trouble (wheter they actually do that is not for me to say). These include refugees and guest workers who do not speak english very well. As an educated english speaking expat you are not in that bracket i think. There is certanly a part of the population who is racist but every culture has those i believe... (Also some of us (i especially) love ironically nationalistic/racist humor (see r/2visegrad4you), if you can handle that you are good to go) -In Budapest you will get by very well only speaking english. Getting a job is a little bit harder but it is possible (i actually have a middle eastern coworker who doesnt speak hungarian, she gets by fine i think) Everywhere else is a different story, in the countryside you may need some help to get by from someone who speaks hungarian. But young people tend to speak english much more than older folk, as they are taught the language and they are more tapped in the online ecosystem. So yeah i think it is a good choice to come here, maybe the education system will be a little bit different first (it is very lexical instead of problem solving, but its not that bad)

No, I didn't feel discriminated against, but I was cautious. In the city center/ touristy areas there shouldn't be a problem. There are even LGBTQ-friendly venues. It can vary… some people may be more accepting than others. But in the city center you shouldn‘t be concerned.

Budapest is mostly safe for LGBTQI+ people, especially in tourist areas and downtown! There are even several LGBTQI-friendly bars and cafes. But it’s still good to be cautious in more conservative areas… But in the tourist areas/city center I wouldn‘t be concerned.
