"I thought the people that sung this song was white" And that's unfortunately likely why Living Color was so underrated. A group of black guys playing some hard rock in the 80s? Hell, even today that would be a bit of an anomaly. We've got white rappers and hip hop artists. That's almost normal now. We need more black rockers. We gotta stop assigning genres to skin colors.

Guys, Living Colour is a great band to get into, and Cult of Personality is only the starting point. They combine a lot of elements to their music. Just a starter course would be Open Letter to a Landlord, Which Way to Your America, What's Your Favorite Color?, Funny Vibe, Glamour Boys, Solace of You, Type, Love Rears its Ugly Head, Elvis is Dead (for the lolz).... pretty much the entirety of their first two albums, Vivid and Times Up. If you are digging it, go their 3rd album Stain. It was more experimental but still hard and had some good tunes too. Their last few albums are good too. Their signature sound was pioneered by Corey Glover on vocals and Vernon Reid on lead guitar. The whole band was good though so no hate against their bassist or drummer.

These guys won a couple of Grammy's, Best Hard Rock Performance, Best New Artist, and a MTV Video Music Award (for this MTV video) too. 1988! Living Colour was the best! That neon yellow suit was a neoprene sweat suit. You literally was sweating due to your own body heat when you exercised in that thing. But if you take away the music, they had a message for everyone to not just be a follower, but to step up and be a leader. Only you can control your own destiny, don’t let others control it for you. I’m glad to see younger people are seeing this video and learning the message of what it means to be living in a culture of personality. “Cult of Personality”

I was like the little girl in video when this debuted on MTV in 1988. I was glued to the screen and mesmerized. I was a fan of rock and heavy metal and was constantly ridiculed by people in my family for listening to "white music". So being the smart ass kid I was I threw Corey Glover, Vernon Reid and Living Color in their face as much as I could. I still love this group as much now as I did then. Vernon Reid is the man and Corey Glover's vocals are insane. Check out the video of him singing "Silence" a Capella.

I remember when this first came out, these guys couldn’t get radio play anywhere. They barely got on MTV. It was so unfair. Black radio stations wouldn’t play them because they were a rock band, white radio stations would not play the because they were black. But you had the grunge band red hot chili peppers playing Ohio players’ Roller coaster of love. These guys I believe they are from New York City and they’re still doing it over there. This is the 90s, spandex ruled embarrassed to say.

Regarding the clothes, the thing about it is that people wear weird shit in music to stand out. There are tons of musical acts, so bands have to do everything they can to gain attention. If you look the same as everyone, then people are more likely to not notice you.
