His voice always reminded me of Carl Anderson. When I found out Corey actually did play Judas in a production Jesus Christ Superstar I was like, "That's no surprise at all!" 🤘
Will Calhoun, Michael Bland, Peter Erskine, John Blackwell, Bernard Purdie Terry Bozzio, Buddy Rich and Josh Freese have some of the most interesting feels and greatest drum sounds ever.
No auto-tune. No silly gimmicks. No excessively-showy props. No pretentious use of "avant-garde" costumes. No ridiculous over-choreographed dance routines. Just four world-class musicians, speaking straight from the heart, and performing well live because that's how music had generally to exist, once upon a time.
Yep , Corey sang over the tape. The others just pretended it. Used to happen a lot on TV back in time. But singer singing over it didn't happen that often. A shame they had to go through it because they're better live! Priceless!
@@rogersgonc It happened a lot. Not in this case though imho. First - Will obviously plays. And playing it along with the studio version, it differs....
These cats are masters of their craft. The deserved to be selling out stadiums. Ive seen them play- sometimes in small venues- and they always bring their A game. One of the best bands ever, so versatile and skilled.
Still sound like this live. Saw them 2 weeks ago with Extreme. Hope they come back to Australia. Yeah underrated because they should've been way bigger than they were globally, not just America.
If you actually listen closely to the lyrics of this song you'll hear and see what the black community talks about all the time! Love this song! Corey Glover and Living Colour thank you!
First two albums were crazy good. And they were one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to… every LC song lends itself to head-banging, and head-banging we did.
Hi guys, i always remember when i listened the main songs of living colour on the radio here in Brazil. One of the first thing then i did when the internet started with youtube, i tryed to looking for the band songs... and i discovered a universe. I really enjoy the living colour songs!
These brothers dropping knowledge and rockin" at the same time GREAT SONG. I bought their tape back in the day.to bad many black people didn't get their message or couldn't feel the rock music. which really is our music anyway.
The fact is their message was strong in a postive way & I'm sure it has filtered through the industry. It's not obvious but how can any right minded person not give this band cred??!!!!!
I was a fan of their music from the moment I first heard "Cult of Personality". So see black folks ROCK like this was an awesome sight...both in 1988 when I was a junior in high school, and today.
You should have seen Bad Brains in the early/mid 80's live as well....like a religious experience. I (thankfully) saw Living Colour on their swing through Toronto in 89 before the album really exploded. I have always felt grateful to my first boss for convincing me to go that show as they obviously are killer live.
If by "our" music...you mean actual musicians right...because if your talking color of skin...then you straight up owe the twelve note tonal system and their accompanying instruments to white Europeans...but the last time I ran a check...everybodies plates are from Africa. Stop with this ignorant racist bullshit.
Jason Hill Vernon Reid has a 'very big part' in this Full sound. If you take the guitar parts from Vernon Reid away...it would be much less Full. For sure! Vernon Reid is 'the' driving part in living colour. Excellent guitar player!
For me, across all genres, this is one of the all time greatest ensemble of music and musicians. I'm a Jazz guitarist but these guys gives me the best goosebumps everytime I listen to them. The lyrics are 1,000 % on point.
Even by today's standard and modern times.....We still behind or that society we went backwards ....Hendrix, Prince,Kravitz, Living Color and even Eric Gales long live afro rock!!!
They Tore this up in the Apollo, This Group was taken Lightly in their Ambiguous messages that actually spoke into the Issues of the Day, Be It Racism,Poverty, or what have You, They were **Not** Afraid to Touch on the Issues and Promulgate them in the Face of The Ruling Powers. Thats what being an Authentic Artist is About. The being a Conduit for the People,Never be Afraid to Stand for those that Made You who You are,Who Supported You. **Living Colour** Never Ever Compromised Nor Forgot **The People** .They will Always have Honor and Respect.
And all those are the reason " they didn't suceed" and will never be in the Hall of Fame. And thats ok to me...they are too human and honest to be there...
The reason why people think this is not a live performance, is because Living Colour were THAT good! This same phenomenon has happened to me with other amazing artists like Seals And Crofts, early Dokken and early Thomas Dolby.
I still listen to songs from Vivid, Times Up and Stain today. I will never tire of listening to this amazing band. Got to see them live in 2013. One of the best live shows I’ve ever been to.
I'm disgusted by how that audience was acting. This man was dropping knowledge and at the same time he was singing really good and they were all over that stage. People often ask why this band is not bigger than what they are and I have one answer their own people. Black people should have gotten behind and should get behind groups like this because these are the true trend setters
Exactly Bud!!!! Its damn shame our own motherfuckin people didnt get behind these wonderful talented musicians. Im big fan heavy metal due to them Bud. Also im intermediate guitar player, just started learning barre chords.
They were wildly popular with the white rock crowd....this audience wasn't ready for rock...black people did not initially come to see Bob Marley either...even when he played in Harlem...it was mainly white trustafarians that came to the show...and actually, still...
That's because the vast majority of black people back then didn't even think of giving rock or metal a chance. Even when the bands were made up of people of their own skin color. A lot of great bands such as Bad Brains, Black Death, and Sound Barrier never got the recognition they should have by the black community as most of them couldn't appreciate this kind of music. Living Color was a great band. They weren't as hard as I'm used to, but they had good messages in their music. I grew up listening to heavy metal starting with Alice Cooper, Kiss, and Twisted sister before getting more into trash, death, and black metal. I was always looking for the hardest, fastest, and most extreme forms of music. But, I always wondered why their weren't many black rock and heavy metal bands back then as I was kind of looking for some black role models in those genres. It's a lot better now, but still the amount of rock and heavy metal bands that exist are still rather scarce as are the number of black people who appreciate them.
imagine jumping around like that and still having the energy to blast them pipes like that. criminally underrated. thanks for doing what you do, even though we didn't thank you enough.
Now that's how to sing!. Love the vocals and it's got both pride and passion and power. Love this band although I can't find my cd's of them at the minute...they've vanished out my Cd collection but I'll find them again!.
Saw Corey Glover live (front row center!) as Judas in one of Ted Neely's last live Jesus Christ Superstar shows... Though both were beyond awesome in their own ways (Ted still hitting the high notes without hesitation in his 60's, and Corey stepping RIGHT IN!), was beyond impressed...
one of many of their great songs, they're a great band that play with great aplomb and a great attitude, for those of you that cant believe in a great black rock n roll band then dont bother commenting cause all you people do is point a finger at yourselves with a note screaming Im a dick head!
Damn! I've just reconnected with this band. Their music today rings true as it did thirty years ago (esp. with Donald DipShit in office). The musicality of this band is just off the charts. Looking back, I wonder if they were just too good, too creative or too cerebral for the average listener of their time. During the time they were popular, I knew many musicians that while they weren't into the hard rock element of Living Colour, always gave props to the musicianship, song writing, lyrics and originality. For me I was into it all. Rediscovering Living Colour after all these years later is just as invigorating as the first time I heard them.
One of my all time favourite LC tracks. Great riff and monster vocal from Corey. Love these guys and saw them live for the first time ever the other night. They were fantastic.
Wow, I remember watching this episode of 'Showtime at the Apollo' when it aired; they were brilliant that night! But then, they're always brilliant! I never thought I'd see this again, thANKHS so much for posting!
As a latino kid born in Brazil, i imagine being a black kid in the 80s and watching then perform live with this much power and with a such a powerful message must've probably felt like watching superheroes
One of my all time favorite guitar riffs and I have heard every riff from here to the valleys of neptune! These guys rocked the roof off the joint and kicked some serious ass with this performance #rockon
