Careful with the eggs. Store-sold eggs usually have the coating that keeps eggs fresh washed off. If you get them direct from the farmer they can sit out for longer. 🧡
@4skinj
@4skinj 6 лет назад
so true... if you buy eggs from the refrigerator then you MUST keep them refrigerated. In Australia they used to be on shelves but now they are in the fridge... if you leave them out of the fridge bacteria starts to grow after 2 hours and you can get salmonella. In the UK eggs are sold on shelves so they can be safely kept in the cupboard. Unfirtunately we cant be unrefrigerated eggs here anymore so they have to be kept in the fridge :(
@MG.50
@MG.50 6 лет назад
Store bought eggs have been washed, removing the natural coating. That oily natural coating is what waterproofs the shell and keeps out (most of) the bacteria. Rubbing the shell of fresh eggs (ones that have not been sitting in the store's fridge too long) with vegetable oil (olive oil also works but imparts more taste to the egg) will seal it again. Then they should last several days without refrigeration. I never tried keeping them unrefrigerated on hikes for more than a couple of days, but I have read people claiming they kept them unrefrigerated for a week that way. Not sure I want to try it for that long.

Hummus, small quantity of cheeses. Salad kits. Avocado with cracked black pepper and sea salt- eat avocado out of shell with a spoon. Vegetarian sausage and coldcuts are precooked and yummy cold. Ready made burritos, chips and dips in jars. Chickpeas/garbanzo beans and canned refried beans are good in cans. Canned or jarred salsa and diced green chiles, jarred pimiento. Oh and rinse all canned beans well. Chutney. Smoked tofu is single serve. Yogurt and cream cheese and crackers if you are eating it right away.

I can't agree with you more (about stove). A single burner with a tiny can of propane doesn't take up much room and opens up a ton of opportunities over room temp foods. Also, even a small to medium cooler WITHOUT ice is better than no cooler at keeping things edible for a bit longer. I agree with your thoughts completely.

If you dont like to go to gas stations to heat up your food, Whole Foods has microwaves and some have toasters! College campuses are another place to microwave. Or if you are in a very hot environment, sitting your food on the dash letting the sun heat your food is a winner. I had a cold ham and cheese sandwich, put it on my dash for an hour..it was heated😊

Just a tip: Mayo is another condiment that doesn't need to be refrigerated. I know; I can make a 30oz jar last 2 weeks in my upstairs room that I currently rent. As long as it stays in the jar. If you mix it with foods, that's what makes mayo go bad. Btw, I kinda live like I'm in a van. Yes I have bathroom and kitchen privileges. But I really only take advantage of the bathroom. I'm handicapped and it's tough for me to climb stairs a bunch.

If you've been driving for a while and stop to eat, you can heat up canned food by putting them on or alongside of your vehicle's exhaust manifold. If the engine is turbo-charged, put the can near the turbo. There is an enormous amount of heat in those things and canned food heats up in no time. Just remember to punch a small hole in the can first or your meal could end up blown all over the place!
@ojaichuck
@ojaichuck 2 года назад
I did this last year on a motorcycle trip. Warmed up a burrito i made and put it on the engine to warm up. I forgot about it and 100 miles later it was still there and toasty hot.

Awesome video! I’ve rediscovered fruit cups and pudding cups recently and Can’t recommend them enough for a quick snack. The 99 cent store has practically everything on this list, definitely my first stop when shopping for food for a few days. I’ve also found that if you can plan a days food in the morning with ready made sandwiches, a salad and frozen vegetable stir fry and a canned meat for dinner, you can store everything in a small insulated lunch pack and the frozen veggies will keep your food cold for most of the day and thawed and ready to cook right when dinner rolls around. Make sure to ziplock the veggies because it can leak and make a mess.

Hi there! I live with no fridge, no microwave and no stove. I dont live in the car, but i live in the guest house where i rent this small room ( toilet is inside my room) with tv, little closet and bed. People here do have option to own a fridge, stove or whatever they want. But i prefer to buy my meal twice a day with delivery service so i dont need to cook or prepare foods. I only go to groceries twice a week to get snacks like chips, veggie biscuits, granola bar, fruits, whole bread, and toilet paper etc. Things i want to address here is, there's plenty of foods and snacks for people who choose to live without fridge and microwave, you just have to figure out what kind of food you want to make and sometime you need to find the subtitute if its too hard to make it without any of those tools (stove, microwave, fridge) By the way i just found your channel and watched some of the videos. Also if you swirl peanut butter and syrup together until it’s consistent, and put that on bread, that’s another sandwich option (I had it as a kid - I only recently found out that peanut butter and syrup sandwiches are unusual. I am obsessed with avocado/hummus sandwiches. I make sure I buy non-GMO bread, or ancient wheat (spelt, etc.), or decent gluten-free, to avoid the genetically-modified wheats that are making us sick. But I digress. So liberally slather hummus on the bread, and use a whole avocado sliced. No butter/margarine/etc needed. Just so good! Hummus is also excellent with tuna and hardboiled egg. I think it is the lemon in it that makes it work. Basically, hummus works well as a mayo substitute.

Ahle; Sardines are very good for you! Fish oil! The only real problem is that a can of sardines is very expensive for the number of fish you actually get. Try the wild caught sardines packed in water. Opening the cans is a little messy if you're not careful about it, and you definitely don't want the smell of empty sardine cans in your van, so make sure you can dispose of them right away.

I use "ice batterys" all the time. Take a water bottle with you when you go places with a freezer and "charge it up"(freeze it) then put it in your cooler. That way I can keep some stuff chilled and I have some cold water. Also it's fairly easy with some careful drilling and a can of great stuff to make a basic cheap cooler into a more efficient cooler like a yeti. It's not pretty but it works.

I wanna kms every day. Living in a van is exhausting, lonely depressing, etc. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. Some people make it work and are happy, but some people have no choice. Like myself. anyone watching this for good reason, i hope yall stay safe and succeed to your full potential. I hope yall are happy where you're at and that you dont let life being you down, you make the most of it in every way.

The sardine comments were so funny :) I will eat fish from a can but not sardines! Here is something that works for me, maybe not everyone. I spend long periods of time in a general geographical area so, I get a storage unit. I keep a cooler in there for things like bottled water, juice and small sealed items. Yes, the ice thing is a little messy but I save lots of money buying these items at Walmart instead of 7-11. Just juice alone was costing $2/day which is $60/month! The storage unit is $40 and I get to buy additional items that save lots of money.

My thoughts exactly on those things called sardines...I thought the exact same, who eats these things? Then, my friend came to visit and we went to the market and he bought SARDINES!!! I was shocked! When he opened them I had to look and I will say if the stench does not turn you off...the looks sure as hell should!

In the US eggs should be kept cold unless you can get unwashed eggs from someone who has chickens. Theres a protective membrane we wash off in the states with it storing them in a cool place they can keep for a month

Sardines? My Costco sells pallets and pallets of sardines, so somebody's eating them! Yep, I am, but never heat them in the microwave at work, trust me on that one, lol!

Just want y mention (as a former food service professional and as a current chicken enthusiast), eggs can only go without refrigeration if they are fresh from the hen (unwashed). If they are washed (like the ones you buy at the store) they need to be kept at 45⁰F (which is passing at just a little warmer of temperature compared to typical 40⁰ foods like milk).

American eggs should be refridgerated due to the way they're processed. Eggs in other places, the UK for example are never refridgerated.

if you ahead and save about 400-500 bucks, you can get a good 3 100watt solar panels at $100 a piece on amazon, and use the rest to buy a good used deep cycle battery at around $100, then get a charge controller and an inverter from amazon if you cant find some cheap on OFFERUP or CRAIGSLIST, would be nice to see you upgrade the van in the future, this would allow you to use a fridge and have proper AC power. its not that expensive when you think about how much you already spend on the van

Marshall Hodge although 1 100W panel might be enough for charging a phone and a laptop, it will get saturated quick if you want to run anything else, your DC battery wont charge fast enough

I just started trucking so I’m broke with no appliances in my truck yet but I’m so glad I found your video it was very helpful to me. I already thought of pb&j, granola bars, pop tarts, crackers, chips, and water but besides that I was stumped. Can’t believe I didn’t think of tuna before…

Knowing where there are several locations for ice, microwaves, toilets, garbage/trash receptacles, showers, places to cool off/warm up and sleep without danger or hassle can help you plan central locations so you minimize driving/gas. Utilizing these places in a rotation so as to not be too obvious or too frequently on the premises will help you get what you need when you need it, without being accused of loitering. Always purchase something in return for the convenience, and never leave trash around. Don't discuss your situation with anyone, even if asked. You don't need to burn bridges behind you. Be polite, and if you get tossed out of a place, go without an argument. There are always options. If you can afford a small self-storage container that has air conditioning, get it. It will help you keep more space in your car, afford you extra space for things you need, and in the middle of a heat wave or snow storm, can provide an hour or two of relief while you retrieve some belongings or store more things. Learn to be stealthy and as invisible as you can be. Take good care of yourself.

I just buy a steak, a potato a carrot a couple pieces of fruit, garlic and a shallot and cook it immediately in my van using an electric pot that is 500 watts. I have -“a 1000 watt inverter and two solar panels. Don’t need a fridge. Just go to the grocery store every time I gotta eat.
