Having lived in England for 30 years...Melbourne weather is NOTHING LIKE the UK.
@barnowl.
@barnowl. 7 месяцев назад
Melbourne has English weather ?!?!?! As a person who has lived in Melbourne for many years, I don't think so ! Melbourne just experienced three days of 35 C degrees plus ! Yes, we have rainy weather, especially in winter and early spring ( and we appreciate it otherwise we would be a very dry state like Western Australia) ) - but nothing like that in England ! On reason people are 'early birds' is because the weather gets soo hot there, especially in summer, that people get up and out before the heat hits, then retreat to air-conditioned comfort until it cools down in the evening. Regarding your lack of air-con in your shared house, you can buy reasonably priced portable air-con machines which vent out of a partially-opened window. I've got one for our spare bedroom if guests stay on a hot night. There are many English people in Perth because it is closer to England. However, it is the most isolated city in Australia and in the world ! Australians are great travellers. We love to travel and think nothing of flying on a plane on a long journey to far places. Australia is equal in size to the USA. Australia, geographically, is the most ancient land in the world. Most of WA once, eons ago, was a sea-bed which is why it is now mostly desert and tourist places are far between. Have you visited the magnificent, giant Kauri forest down south, yet ? Wear a wide-brimmed hat with a net if you really dislike flies on you or just keep practising the 'wave' and wear lighter covering clothes to prevent mosquito bites. The reason why Oz has dangerous, scary animals is because the indigenous people and the white population didn't kill them all off, as it did in England. Australian humour is dry , irreverent, ironic and sarcastic . When used with mates it is an indirect form of close friendship. It likes to 'cut down the tall poppy' which stems from our early days of dislike of the English class system. And it's bloody funny ! Glad to see that you are enjoying the Aussie life. My parents and older siblings emigrated from the UK 72 years ago and I was born shortly after in Melbourne. We children - UK and Aussie born - are sooo thankful that they did. The family is now spread across the four eastern Australian states. We've all visited the UK and have relations there. A younger sibling worked there for five years and my daughter, for six months, but we LOVE living in Australia, our home.

Melbourne can get cold in the winter - but still nothing like England. I live in Melbourne and have never seen snow. In summer we often have higher temperatures than anywhere else in the country, but it is very changeable even within the span of a day. We are experts at layering here!

Daughter is living in UK and home grown in Melbourne. Weather in Melb is nothing like weather in London/UK PS: Perth is predominately British immigrants and Aussies with UK heritage. source: ABS whereas Sydney and Melbourne in particular are very multicultural.

@@ylass8884 agree with you both about Melbourne’s weather being nothing like UK, you have to 😂 Also, add Adelaide as being close to Perth with British immigrant status or first, second generation Australian born with UK heritage.

Hot weather ? Not in Melbourne - try Marble Bar in WA ! Cold in winter ? I grew up in Austria - now, that used to be cold ! ( Non existing climate change has " corrected that !).

yes The whole ' Snakes and Spider" thing is way overstated , no one has died from a spider bite in Australia in 30 years and only around 2 or 3 people a year die from snake bite, you are more likely to be killed by a bee or wasp sting

Exactly this. I grew up in a small dry and dusty town in the Riverina of NSW. Went horse riding through the different bushes everyday, swam in dams and never once saw a snake, never once bitten by a spider. Saw lots of blue tongue lizards, that’s all.

The weather in Melbourne is nothing like England. It never gets 40+ Celsius in England it does in Melbourne. It’s never 36 plus for a week in England it is in Melbourne. It gets minus Celsius every night for weeks in England it never does that in Melbourne. A Melbourne winter is mild compared to England.

As a Briton who has lived here since 1964, I’m an Australian by choice 👍 Come on, I take umbrage at your cons, especially the crisps and chocolate. You are probably missing the salt content in the crisps/chips. We have an extra additive in the chocolate to stop it melting. It goes both ways, Aussies visit the UK and get depressed because of the bad weather, we also can’t find all the multicultural food and decent coffee we are used to either. Seriously what do you expect? You are in another country……fair go, you need to adapt, be reasonable. Of course we have time zones, the whole of the UK fits into Australia 31x almost 32. As for sense of humour, Aussies have their own, it has evolved, you may not get ours either. Whilst our first language is English there will be many things you just won’t ‘get’ or ‘cotton onto’ until you have been here awhile. Whilst we may still be part of the Commonwealth, don’t expect things to be the same. This is why people come over from Britain and never completely adapt, they end up going back. Enjoy your travels, hope Australia and all it has to offer, has broadened your outlook, we are by no means perfect but we try 😊

Hi folks, I just wanted to comment that I'm an mainland Australian by birth and its a lifelong dream of mine to go to Tasmania but my main reason isn't to see the natural beauty and the well known, touristy bits. When my wife and I do get there will be doing plenty of that but my main reason for going is it to see Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights. I'm mentioning it because I'm wondering if you've seen the Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis? You've seen much of Australia but this isn't something you'll find on most people's bucket list,most people tend to forget about Tasmania but there is very few places in the world to view the Southern Aurora from, unique Tasmania is such a place and you might consider it before you leave Australia or viewing the Aurora Borealis as something to be seeking if you return to the northern hemisphere. I'm really looking forward to an ocean cruise to Tasmania, bringing my car and driving Tasmania at leisure. The air is so pure there they bottle it! I'm not spinning you a yarn lol. Tasmania is so remote and relatively untouched that scientists have been bottling the pure, Tasmanian air for decades to measure global pollution etc. For example they have bottled air from 1974 and can compare it to an air sample from 2024, a comparison of air quality, pollutants, hydrocarbons, greenhouse gases etc with 50 years ago. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HANfSRo4srM.htmlsi=Br8tvUJY1A4A4Bug

Great to hear that you are enjoying yourselves, but I'm a bit supprised to hear your comment about Aussies not getting your british humour. Maybe it's an age/internet thing, but I've been exposed to British humour via TV here for over 50 years ... and love it! The same is true of most middle aged Ozzies I'd say. Likewise, have seen great humour from America too for many, many years. I remember living abroad for the first time, working in London in the mid 90's. I was pretty broke money wise, that added to the homesickness! Cheers.

Walkers chips are the same company as lays and lays owns and makes Smiths...so Walkers is in Australia...we just don't have foul flavours like prawn cocktail and pickle juice shivvers (yuck). We do have Galaxy here in Australia...it's called Dove, it even has the same looking packaging and font, just a different name.

I live in Brisbane and go on frequent hikes and I never worry about animals. Never see them to be honest. I think the dangerous animal thing is so overhyped it’s getting ridiculous. As for flies, not everywhere in Australia gets those nasty blow flies. It’s mainly near sheep grazing areas.

Where have you been to here? ..in WA. Rotto? Esperance? The Kimberly & Coral Coast? Margaret River? South West in general? I lived in the UK from '90-'93 & found our soh very similar..especially as we grew up on a diet of pommie tv etc All the classics. 👍👍 Also preferred our chocolate...must be a 'what you're used to thing'. WA has the best beaches in Australia...& Australia's beaches are world class. Even suburban beaches here are sensational, but Cape Le Grande in Esperance is another level!🤯 Whitest beaches & 2 of them..Lucky Bay & Hellfire Bay were no.1 & 2 as voted worlds best beaches for 2023 👍 Totally spectacular down there! So if you haven't taken the 7hr drive or plane trip yet......... & 7hr drive is nothing to us here lol ✌️
