This question is so easily answered; $500. USD monthly - A 1 bedroom condo if you look around for a deal is around $300 small all amenities but definitely doable, water $20, electric is $100, internet & phone $50. Everything else on top of that is up to YOUR lifestyle. You choose how to spend the remaining budget

We would only move back if we could take our animals with us (I know that I brought 3 back with me from Thailand...so, I know it is doable...) I live comfortably in rural northern Thailand for about $300/฿10000 per month. I am on a retirement visa which costs me $1100 per year. I drive a motorcycle which is easy and cheap maintenance while being good on petrol. Medical is decent and incredibly inexpensive. I own my own home so I can cook for myself but I do eat out about fifty percent of the time. Supplies and miscellaneous is as he said, about one-quarter of the costs in the States. I was living well in Chiang Mai on about $1000 per month but grew tired of city life. Bangkok is one of the most expensive place to live in Thailand but if you gotta have nightlife and the girls then there you have it. Life can be very good here but learn the language, culture and customs before you settle or you will your experience will remain two dimensional.

This is reasonable, really. I will be getting roughly 1800 US per month on social security in a few years. Even with inflation, this is totally do-able and very encouraging.
@sanjosemike3137
@sanjosemike3137 6 месяцев назад
I agree. However, I would NOT drop your US Medicare coverage and pay for it, or have it subtracted from your SS. This way, you can always get back to the US and get coverage for cancer care or pre-existing conditions. Presently, it is about 144 dollars/month. Even if you purchase health insurance over-seas, it will not usually cover cancer care. Obviously, you have to get back to the US to get this care. This guy has a rather luxurious apartment. You can get a much smaller one for much less (as long as it is NOT in a major city). You can get a very decent one for half what he pays. Remember Mexico. It is also a terrific bargain. There, you have to have a little "conversational" Spanish to live cheap. You can use Google Translate and speak what it says. If you make an attempt to speak Spanish, you can find apartments for much less. Don't be frightened by this. After you work on it for a couple of weeks, you will find yourself understanding it too. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

@@sanjosemike3137 Yep. I also have a small $250 per month teachers retirement pension which I will use to cover my Medicare and keep it going while abroad. I'll be coming back to America every spring during Burning Season and living in my home, which will be managed by my son. The last thing I would want to do is to get sick or injured in Ohio or whatever and not be able to be treated!
@sanjosemike3137
@sanjosemike3137 6 месяцев назад
@@beverlyweber4122 Even if Medicare costs go up, the 250 dollars should be enough to cover it, for a while. If you can afford a supplement, all the better. You are in a good position to consider MX. I love Mexico! The people are wonderful and in many locations you can get excellent healthcare and dentistry for much less than the US. I would encourage you to consider it. It is much closer than Europe and very easy to get back and forth. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

@averagejoe4700 6 месяцев назад
$1800 a month is more than do-able to live in Thailand. Not only are there inexpensive places in Bangkok (who says one has to live in the premiere areas of the city like Asoke), but you can also live comfortably in other cities like Chiang Mai or down south towards Hua Hinh. I have done the numbers myself and the biggest cost savings for me was no longer needing a car and saving on rental costs. My current vehicle is 14 years old and there is no way I want to buy another one with the insurance, upkeep, monthly payment, and gas required. In places like Hua Hinh, there are public 'buses' that you can ride around the city for pennies. You can even get a moped if needed. And what I pay now for renting a one bedroom studio apartment in California is close to your 1800 budget!!! So do realize that you are giving yourself a lot of wiggle room in Thailand by simply eliminating things you need in the U.S., that you do not need in Thailand! I think one of the big problems with determining a retirement budget in Thailand, is the misinformation spread by some people. These people will claim that you will be absolutely miserable in Thailand if you don't have at least $5000 USD per month to live on (some will say even more). That is absolutely insane. What these people fail to realize is that the majority of us want to move to Thailand primarily because it is a LOWER cost of living compared to our home countries. We are not, I repeat, NOT, desiring to replicate the same budget and lifestyle in a foreign country. We don't have a need to hit the bars and clubs every night, buy a fancing sports car, and wine and dine at the fanciest five star restaurants.

Positive factors in both places, each has their strengths and weaknesses... End goal after Dubai, where I'm at now? Split my time between the two countries... I am a Brit in Bangkok and the one thing this video demonstrates is just how expensive the USA has become. Bangkok is not that cheap for Brits as even with inflation prices are still 30-40% cheaper than the USA. Its still good value especially if you eat Thai food a lot and dont drink wine or go out much. Thats where the sweet spot is IMO. However if you enjoy a nice steak dinner twice a week and go out on a Saturday night be prepared for minimum £3000PCM. A bottle of wine will be £20. A nice bottle £40. Nice western food like Italian or Greek is plentiful but comparable prices to the UK. Fruit, vegetables, cheese, most meat all more expensive than UK - other than maybe chicken. I would say my average weekly shop is around £120 here in Bangkok back home in the UK its around £75-80. Thats for good eating too. I pay not far off £1500PCM for a 60m2 condo incl utilities. I appreciate people pay less, but not everyone can live in a 28m2 studio even if it is £300 a month. So if you have got this far, and you are British, be very careful when you watch videos like this where they quote dollar prices because a £4.99 Aldi sirloin steak in Bangkok is closer to 2x the price. That same £4.99 Aldi steak in the US would be $15 so nearly 3x UK price. This is where people get confused and think its "cheap" but it all depends on what you are comparing it with! Thanks for the video btw another great one.

Excellent Vlog Chris. Your Guest was concise and realistic living in Bangkok. Depending on your addictions/lifestyle i would say he has a good lifestyle as you probably would be living like that on a day to day basis back in your own country but more expensive.

You need around $3000-5000 to live comfortably in Mexico. Thailand is way cheaper and you get a lot more bang for your buck also.

Sounds like he has a great lifestyle in BKK and I love the Condo and how it is right at the SkyTrain. Im a tennis player and pickle ball guy too so it’s good to know there are places to play over there for when I make the move. My meals in Bangkok the last few weeks were about 36 Baht including drink at Terminal 21 Food Court. I went there so much they got tired of seeing me. Great Vid and great Guest Chris !

Just found your channel! It is sooo inspiring! Me and my husband live in MICHIGAN currently but we don’t have kids and we are saving up our retirement fund so we can retire early. I’m from the Philippines originally but I didn’t know how beautiful it is in Bangkok! Thanks for doing this video!!!! I’d love to experience living there one day.

If you are retirees, there are many condo along mass transit out skirt of Bangkok, much lower price, you still can come to city in 30-40 minutes. Wow, 10000-step idea is great!

Clicked on this video - while enjoying my morning coffee on Soi 22 in BKK, while wearing my 'round the sun' t shirt... lol. Thanks for the informational video. We really enjoy the area On Nut on out Sukhumvit. We've been here 8 months last year, and will be here a bit over 8 months this year. Not made to jump for leasing a condo yet though... (When you going to make more of the "full color" printed "around the sun" shirts? I've had more comments on this shirt, lol.

We’re from Tampa, too! We were just there staying in the Chidlom area last week so we need to check this area out next time! I got to film at Music Concept in Central World (there are some amazing metal guitarists in Bangkok!!) Oh, I think my wife saw you from a distance when we were at Benchakitti Park a week or so ago! Dude we cannot wait to go back!!! (Planing to move there in the next few years)

Hi Chris another great video, been watching your channels (s) for 4 months now. I will do this one day soon, maybe not for life but for a year or two. I've now got my wife thinking the same after a Bangkok trip in September this year. This type of video is fantastic information to avoid making expensive mistakes in the future (hopefully). Does bringing a pet (dog) make Condo rental significantly more difficult? I sense that pet ownership is not that common particularly in the city.

Great vid and very informative ........ I guess it all comes down to what type of lifestyle you want to live when living there , you either choose to spend a lot or you can just budget things wisely and you can still live an enjoyable lifestyle

Great video Chris and team as always! Hey Chris, I saw Adam in a band in a recent video. If he’s interested my brother, who has played in Tokyo dome, is there in Bangkok. I’m sure he’d love to connect with Adam and you and play guitar 🎸 if Adam and his team like. He’s really down to earth and low key. You guys will love him. He grew up in Canada as well. Let me know how we can make it happen.
