Hello All, Welcome to my channel!
Columbus, Ohio has grown rapidly over the last decade and has added over 100,000 residents during that time. People are moving to Columbus primarily from the Midwest, especially from other cities in Ohio. Columbus is the safest large city in the Midwest and is really an intriguing opportunity for many new residents. There is still more crime here than You would like to see, but it is much safer than the competition from the region. With a diverse job market, many people can move to this Midwestern gem and still keep within their career tracks. The median home price is well beneath the nation's average here. Even though they earn less than many other cities the low housing costs still put home ownership within the grasp of many.
Ohio State University is located in Columbus and is a large reason why some decided moving to Columbus was the right fit for them. Being that this University is located here brings Job prospects, entertainment options, and educational opportunities that are quite remarkable. Also, Columbus has one of the best food scenes in all of America. They serve as a test market for new food concepts and residents get to reap the rewards. They have hundreds of parks in the area that allow you to get outside of the city and don't sleep on their arts and cultural exhibits either.

I was born in Columbus and lived there until the mid-80's. Before, retiring outside of the U.S in 2019 I spent the previous 23 years living mainly in California and , in particular, the last 10 in San Francisco (except for 2 years in Seattle and a year in Buenos Aires, Argentina).Having lived in Columbus I will agree with you about the people being nice. I don't think I could ever live there again because the City is still not urban enough for me and I wouldn't want to own a car again. Having said that, I do thoroughly enjoy visiting Columbus and I really like how the city has become more diverse and slightly more urban--however, it still doesn't feel like a city of 900,000. San Francisco is smaller but feels way larger and more energetic and dynamic. I also, love the walkability of San Francisco and the public transportation. I didn't even have to own a car there. While I feel all cities need to be unique and not carbon copies of each other. If Columbus continues to grow they should definitely think about the walkability of the city and invest in some sort of mass transit. Regardless, I still love to visit my friends and family in CBUS and being constantly amazed at how the changes.
@gregb767
@gregb767 2 года назад
San Francisco feels larger because it is larger. Its' complete metropolitan population is 4,750,000 people vs. Columbus's 2,139,000 people. The city (only) populations can be misleading due to the way they are calculated in square mileage and density. I live in Columbus and like it here, but having lived in Miami and Atlanta, yes it do feel and see the difference in the population and urban feel.

I have lived in Columbus since 1994, moved here from Michigan. It's a great place to live. I have been to other cities and always move back. It's very affordable and easy to get a job. I love the diversity in Columbus. People are chill and laid back. The Ohio State University is one of the best colleges and even more affordable than other colleges across the state. Inner city Columbus can be crime ridden, like most inner cites across the US. But there are great suburbs that offer good schools and low crime like Gahanna, Dublin, Westerville, Reynoldsburg, Hillard. Basically dont live in the inner city and you will be fine for the most part. The only thing I don't like about Columbus is the weather. It's all over place. It can be warm one day and freezing the next. But overall it's an awesome place to live.

Hi Maricya! I am currently searching to a different state to move to and texas & Ohio is in my choice so far. I just have a few questions to ask about Ohio. Is Ohio diverse? Affordable? Which cities are safe to live in for a black person & which cities has good schools for kids?
@Meeshawill
@Meeshawill 2 года назад
@@todajahhardridge720 Hi Todajah, Columbus is very diverse. In nearly all the neighborhood I have lived in from lower middle class to affluent areas I have had neighbors of all nationalities. White, Asian, Somalian Nepali, Hispanic ect...because of the diversity of Columbus, I feel we have much less racism because the races all live, work and go to school together. Columbus City Schools are not good, however we have many suburbs and the suburbs schools are good. Like Westerville, Gahanna. Reynoldsburg ect...The suburbs blend into Columbus in some areas, so you can live in Columbus (pay lower property taxes and possibly lower rent) but your kids still go to suburban schools. There a lot of jobs in Columbus, we have a lot of Healthcare, Education, Banking, industries here. People live just fine even without a college education because of the stability of the job market here. Housing is still reasonable here as well. It has went up as it has across the nation but it still affordable compared to other places in the country. God blessed me to buy a 3 bd rm home in February for about $157,000 as a single mother. So it's doable. If you have a spouse that's even better!

We lived 32 years in Columbus starting in 1980. We enjoyed it. We actually were sorry to leave when we did but we ran into a period where the big corporations there were dumping anyone over 55 to save salary money. They then offered the jobs to younger people at much less pay. Yes, the ability to go almost anywhere from Columbus, in a one day drive, is one of its best features. The NHL hockey team, the Blue Jackets, are fun and play in a wonderful arena and the new soccer stadium is world class. There are many great food and drinking options. By far, to me, the biggest drawback is lack of real mass transit. The bus system is only OK and they will never have light rail. At least there are a lot of bike friendly trails. Don't get me started on the politics there but hey, politics suck all over the USA these days. If you move there for a job. good for you, especially if you are under the age of 40. You'll love it!

Some points as a born and raised Columbus, Ohioan: I would say crime/homelessness and weather are what I hear most people complain about. Not so much the extremes in one direction, just how back and forth it is. One day could be snow and the next could be a sudden heat wave in the 70's, spring is a very strange time. Also lately due to global warming there hasn't been as extreme of winters as I remember when I was little (in the negatives, always a decent amount of snow) but knowing Ohio I wouldn't count it out yet as a mild winter state, we have been known to get blizzards and hail storms. By the way the ease of travel was mentioned, however keep in mind that is strictly for a car. The only kind of public transit is the local buses or greyhound buses, which both can elicit their own horror stories and are prone to showing up whenever; there's also no access to the Amtrak unless you drive a few hours up to Chicago or Sandusky, which to me kind of defeats the point. Also there is some frustration with politics, because while Franklin County is very diverse and usually leans liberal, the rest of Ohio tends to be conservative and currently is trying to pass their own version of Florida's Don't Say Gay bill with new racial clauses in it as well, and also has been trying to make abortions illegal for years. I wouldn't necessarily consider a safe state for young LGBT+ (though there is a vibrant 18+ gay scene especially downtown) or adult women based on policy. Also speaking of women, rape accusations at OSU continue to climb each year, one site even saying "out of about 26k students, about 2,600 women and about 800 men will experience sexual assault while at OSU", and another saying there was 417 allegations of rape between the years of 2017 and 2020. Most people do not consider it safe to walk around near campus at night, especially alone, and usually advise to stay with friends in the "Short North" (if you've gone past 5th Avenue, you've gone too far). Also as far as people, I don't think I would go as far as saying people here are friendly. I would more say there is an expected initial politeness if absolutely necessary, generally people try not to look each other in the eye or speak to others, and there's a lot of highstrung busy bodies downtown which is to be expected. Jobs here though are definitely on the up and up, but be be careful about wages-- as mentioned in the video a lot of places are not afraid to underpay you for your work because that is the norm here, and we only fairly recently upped the minimum wage to 8.55. Overall, I would say definitely not the worst place to live, but I'd choose your neighborhood and job carefully, especially if you're of a marginalized group.

I live here and have seen this city go from being seen as a "cowtown" and as inferior to Cincinnati and Cleveland to a fashion and foodie destination and the best place in America to find a great paying job. In fact, I moved to Austin Texas a few years back yet moved back to Columbus for better opportunities, which I found. If you are a non-skilled worker for example, you can literally walk into a warehouse, take a drug test and be making $18-20hr to start. BTW, I live next to Franklin Park. Gentrification is an issue, and the CPD is under the radar as one of the most corrupt and racist forces in America. Still, there are no racial nor political tensions amongst the people like you see in other places. Construction is booming so orange barrels and detours are a constant, but every major company and distributor is here and it's an employee-friendly place unlike the South, so making good money is easy. I just hope that we don't get an influx of politically brainwashed cultists ( from either side) that turn our peaceful existence upside down.

Jessica, transportation in Columbus is not that great. I moved to a rural area in 1989. I am now 40 miles away from Columbus. However, the public transport system is called COTA. You would have to research and find if where you want to move to is on the bus line. Other options would be to take a cab or call uber. They have always talked about a high speed train that would take you to Cleveland or Cincinnati but that has never happened. Apparently it is still talk. However, if you are disabled you could make some phone calls to see if a small bus that only picks up disabled individuals would be available to you. They pick you up at the same time every morning. I have seen them on the road and they are part of the COTA system.

The worst thing about Columbus is transportation. The buses don't run as often nor as far as buses in many other cities. Also there are no commuter/rapid transit trains. The roads and highways are too crowded. The second problem is Columbus is forever under construction. The city will be nice if they ever finish it.

It depends on the type of music you do. Due to OSU and many other universities/colleges there, and its large younger population, many people are pretty liberal, progressive and open minded which lends to its acceptance of music diversity. Smaller stage bands of all kinds should do pretty well there. There is also a thriving arts following there, however, not as prevalent as the San Francisco Bay area's.

It is misleading to state that Columbus is larger than San Francisco and Seattle. I live in Columbus, but have to educate people about this all the time. So yes, its city's population is larger, but that is because city populations are based on the amount of people living within is city's square mileage. Columbus's is 225, while San Francisco's is 47 and Seattle's is 84. The larger the square miles the more people are accounted for. What's more accurate in determining how large a city really is, is by its metropolitan area which is 4,750,000 for San Francisco and 4,018,000 for Seattle. Columbus is 37th in the nation at only 2,139,000. If you've been to these cities you will see/feel both are a significantly larger urban centers than Columbus, just by the downtown's itself.

I’ve lived in Columbus for over a decade and plan on leaving the state next year. It lacks diversity in my opinion and there isn’t much to do outside of your typical eating out or going to a park. Crime has increased substantially and the cost of living, although cheaper than many other cities, is on the rise. If you’d like to lay low, get out of debt, finish college, then I would recommend it (i.e. 5 years max). But if you need a cool social scene & reliable public transit, then this is not the place for you.

Ohio is not unlike other places. Racial tensions exist, but you barely notice it in the bigger cities. The rural areas have a 1950's Mississippi feel to them if you are not White ( just being honest) but in the Cities you don't see race wars, swaztickkaz ( spelling intentional to avoid censoring) And overt racial aggression like you do in Texas, California and anywhere in the South. Speaking for Columbus, this city embraces it's diversity, lauds it's ethnic food scene and and is more of an economically segregated city than racial. Here, the (hoods are actually not just Black, ( you know the stereotypes), poor folks of all groups are sort of pushed together. In a sense I think this fosters poor Black's, Whites, Hispanics and Latinos to live peacefully amongst each other instead of going at each other, again unlike Texas and California. The police has a racial issue, but this occurs everywhere in the country due to racist being attracted to the profession.
