One thing i noticed here is that rabbits and squirrels are not afraid of humans. And one squirrel actually approached me with arms stretched out, seemingly asking for food. That immediately gave me an idea how good of people here are.

I came here in about 1990 to get a master's degree and never left. I've had no troubles finding good jobs in my field. Wages aren't as good as on the coasts but the low cost of living more than makes up for that. Fargo isn't for everyone. If it's strengths match what you want in life it's sure worth a look though. And yes, the winters are cold. It's not really that big a deal. Appropriate cold weather clothing and a car with auto start so you can let it warm up a bit go a long way to taking the sting out of winter.

I've lived in the FM area for 30 years now and I think your wrong about housing being affordable. Your paying an average of 350-400k for a 10-20 year old home. If you want new construction it's upwards of 550k+. That is not affordable. If your renting...say...a three bedroom apartment be prepared to pay $1500+ a month for a modern apartments and 1200+ for older buildings. Don't move here thinking it's cheap, because it's not...at all.. I'd say if your a family of 5 you'll need $70,000-$100,000 income to live comfortably.
@LivinginNorthDakota
@LivinginNorthDakota 8 месяцев назад
Perspective is everything. Those prices are inexpensive compared to what people living in the states on the West and East Coast. For somebody from WA, OR, CA, AZ, FL etc - suddenly the cost of living (including housing) becomes comparatively inexpensive and the quality of life offered in FM becomes evident.

Houses pop up in Fargo for $200,000 and even lower, where I live you'd be lucky to find ANY house for under $700,000. I see 1-2 bedroom apartments in fargo for as low as $500-$600, a one bedroom in my city rents for around $2,000. Fargo is one of the only cheap cities left on the west.

Make sure you consider the political environment you want to live in when moving to the area. Moorhead, the Minnesota side, is in a state that is more liberal, including protecting abortion in the state constitution. While Fargo itself is relatively liberal, the state itself is not. If you have a trans kid, for example, you'll need to live on the Minnesota side for them to get health care related to that. There's a significant political difference depending on which side of the river you're on, so if that is important to you, definitely research before moving.

Oh believe me, Fargo has those too 😅 I work in downtown Fargo and get asked for money on a daily basis. I avoid certain street corners where a group of individuals sit and approach passing pedestrians. I’ve had food thrown at my car. Witnessed people doing drugs and urinating in the public parking ramp stairways and have had to take a self defense class sponsored by my employer. Although downtown Fargo has a lot to offer, it’s definitely not perfect. I grew up in Bismarck and even though the two cities are only 200 miles apart, they feel like different worlds entirely. Bismarck is much better, cleaner, and safer.
@kayletzgo
@kayletzgo 2 месяца назад
@@spaniel_lvrdo you feel like fargo is improving over all? Especially the downtown area? We have family in ND so we go every year and pass by Fargo and we’ve noticed a lot of development/improvement in the downtown area but it also seems like more homelessness. I’m thinking crime has gone up in the area despite the city’s efforts to improve downtown. Curious as to your thoughts since you actually live there and we were just visiting (just came back last week)
@spaniel_lvr
@spaniel_lvr 2 месяца назад
@@kayletzgo there is definitely an increase in homelessness not just in downtown but city wide. They are continuing to develop downtown but the buildings they are developing have high rent. I’ve been in Fargo for 6 years and have noticed an increase in crime. The police force isn’t a large as I think it should be for the population of the area. They have a police hub downtown but people still panhandle, urinate in the parking ramps, and try to break into cars in the parking ramp. There are two things that keep the homeless population downtown. There is the Salvation Army building that provides them meals and then there is a downtown engagement center for them to go to during the day for medication if needed. There has been a homeless camp established along the river. I wouldn’t walk the path along the river alone for that reason. If you are going to move to the Fargo area, consider West Fargo or Horace. Horace especially is a much nicer area but houses are more expensive for sure. If you are familiar with Minneapolis, Fargo is much safer than that area but it doesn’t feel like other towns in the state. It definitely feels like a city rather than a small town.

I moved to Fargo for a job and was there for just under two years. I am now living in California. Fargo is a cross betweeen the Twilight Zone and purgatory. The people were just weird...kinda off. What I discovered about the place, was the people born and raised in the area did not like newcomers. They looked at you as an "intruder, " and I was told as much. I found old-fashioned attitudes, and a dislike of anyone who was not straight and white. I also did not like the ultra-conservative attitudes. It is 100% Trump, and you do have a lot of radical right-wingers. Everyone drives a pickup truck and looks like they are on meth or live in a trailer park. The cost of living is not that low, and jobs pay dirt. I was never so glad to get out of Fargo. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

I think it really depends on why youre thinking of moving to Fargo, what exactly youre looking for and where youre originating from. Not a visually attractive place; It's not picturesque at all. Instead, I moved to western Minnesota a year ago, so Im only maybe 45 minutes away from stateline-which is Fargo/Moorhead. I head over every week as there are more options for shopping than you'll ever need. Also, very good health care facilities and top tier doctors. ND def has the tax advantages compared to MN.

I like the attentiveness to the comments, i just found out about north dakota today, everywhere in america i would be scared because of the crime rate, so i would always look for apartments at high places so crime would be at ground floor nowhere near me, but for once when looking for places in north dakota i feel safe no matter where. It will be my first time in america, i was born american but never had the chance to move there, i dont have much education but im hoping to grow. The rent when i was looking for apartments were like around 500 dollars a month which was crazy but i also found that the minimum wage is 7 dollars an hour so it makes sense. But im curious as to how easy it is to find jobs, like thats the only issue because a small state with few people means few jobs aswell i feel like, but i could be wrong. I want to work at minimum wage until i get higher education, any advise if i were to move here.

For those thinking about Fargo, consider its reality is a function of its past. Fargo, Grand Forks & Wahpeton, ND are really just Western outposts of Minnesota. And thus the rest is: Oh, North Dakota & South Dakota ought never to have been States in the Union. They had been grouped land-wise with most of Eastern Montana and in honor of the tribes living there, the "Dakota" Sioux, named Dakota. However, Post Civil War Republicans sought more U.S. Senate seat votes as the South slowly was being readmitted to the Union. Thus, divide by 3 and you get, well, "6 Senators." Neither SD or ND would have survived financially without the historically massive subsides provided by the Federal government, a government both, politically, claim to hate, AKA MAGA-ville. And why is the Federal money (gift) forthcoming? It's those senate seats of old. Well, while they claim to "hate it" but only after the checks are delivered by the U.S. Gov't's USPS. [But here note: the checks go to the few, not the many. To get the federal check you must "own or control the land." If you do not you get trickle-down]. Most all of SD's & ND's economic activity happens within 75 miles of the Minnesota borders. All of their small towns died economically by the 1960's, when most of WWII's cash-flow had been spent. Even its regional towns/cities of 8,000 or less are passing rapidly into history. It is Abe Lincoln and his Homestead Act of 1862 that's to blame. Dry land Farming West of the 98th can be sustained only with masses subsides. [The 98th is 50-miles West of Fargo]. Think the dust-bowel and FDR and the 1930's. The USDA told Lincoln in 1861 not to do it, but Lincoln was a Northern Whig, i.e., today they'd be called "Socialists." He believed in using the government to build the nation's infrastructure - remember the railroads being built West into a wilderness? Completed in 1869 and totally broke by 1875. Well, thank you Mr. Lincoln. America even today has not come to fully to accept that 2/3's of the nation is a dry or semi-dry desert or high plains desert. Slice down from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Dallas, Texas and you have basically tracked the 98th. West of that line to the Pacific Ocean it is, well, dry - very dry. All the dams and canals build by the U.S. Government were done to make a desert bloom and the senate seat votes (re-read the above) delivered the cash. Oh, Lincoln would have loved it. What I find most interesting about the area West of the 98th is the people their think their world was built by "Individual enterprise & effort." It was not. Life there was and is but a function of Washington D.C. policy or politics. Remember the rule: if you break it you own it. The USA Gov't. broke the Great Plains (once know as the Great American Desert - here think Oregon Trail and wagon trains) & the tribes and, YES, Now She Owns it and it is costly.

I tried to ask this question by sending it to the email address listed above, but it bounced back as "undeliverable". As such, I'm going to try asking it here in the comments: My son and I are considering moving to Fargo (among other places) and I have a very important question that doesn't appear to be addressed by any of the videos I've seen. My son suffers from asthma and pollen allergies and is prone to chronic sinus infections. We currently live in central PA along the Susquehanna River - which is notorious for its bad air quality for people with asthma/allergies. This is the primary reason why we are looking to relocate. We were in Fargo briefly a few years ago when taking a midwest road trip in the Summer of 2022 and we fell in love with much of it. However - how is the area for people who suffer from seasonal allergies and asthmatics? I figure that with the long winters, that means a shorter "hay fever season", but once spring does bloom along the prairie there, how bad is the pollen count and how do people who suffer from hay fever usually fare? Also, how is the air quality in general for asthmatics? When we were the a few years ago, much of the midwest was suffering from smoke in the atmosphere from the huge wildfires that were raging along the west coast that summer - so we didn't take that as indicative of what a normal summer would be like in those areas. Barring things like wild fires, etc, how is the air quality for asthmatics in Fargo? Any insight you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

In any case - I would need to refer you to look at other sources of info for this specifically as it relates to your son’s allergies and health concerns. As real estate agents-we can advise you on the market, what different areas can offer and are looking like etc - but I am certainly not an expert on how seasonal allergies might affect someone. Shoot me a text - 701-253-1872

Are wages in North Dakota higher or lower than the US average?
@LivinginNorthDakota
@LivinginNorthDakota 7 месяцев назад
The median household income is $78,720/year in the whole state. That’s slightly above the national median household income of $74,580. That said - depending on your skill set and type of work you may be significantly above (or below) this level of income. Individuals in the Bakken Oilfield can make well over $100,000/year - but the work culture involves long overtime hours and is very cyclical with the price of oil.

Thinking about moving here after fellowship. Will visit the hospital from NY in a few weeks... My only concern is the landscape. Are there many lakes around? I'm accustomed to the hills in Northern Ca, biking, trails, water, Ocean... looks very flat. Also, I left Ca just before Covid and I recall the smoke being unbearable. Is it smoky there in the Summer?
@IDontWantAFknHandle
@IDontWantAFknHandle 4 месяца назад
Not really. In the 5 years that I've been living in this area only 1 summer was somewhat smoky due to wildfires in Canada. Personally being from California myself the summer humidity, insects, violent storms and brutal winters here are much more of an issue. And yes, it is extremely flat and there aren't any lakes, but there is the Red river which has really good fishing. Hope this helps.

The Fargo area is flat. FLAT. There are lakes nearby. Within an hour away you’ll find many lakes. Minnesota is “the land of 10,000 lakes” 😊. We’ve had some hazy days due to Canadian wildfires, but I wouldn’t say that it impacted daily activities.

Thank you. I visited the city, stayed nearly1 week. Loved the small airport, overall flow of traffic and pace of the city. Sanford Med is incredible and realtor Poonam Budhiraja gave an outstanding tour... Unfortunately, it wasn't the right fit.

Almost every client of ours moving to Fargo from somewhere else is curious what it looks like in the area. Of course we’re not going to spend 30+ hours filming and editing without asking people to give us a call if they want help buying a house…. Please send me a link to your tour of Fargo so I can share that also with potential client so they know what the area looks like :-).

I'd buy a house there if my neighbor wasn't 2 feet away from me, why are the houses built so close to each other?
@LivinginNorthDakota
@LivinginNorthDakota 2 месяца назад
Living in any city environment it’s extremely expensive for land, streets, sewer/water lines, etc. Most people can’t afford what it would cost to have huge amounts of space between houses; so developers and builders build homes for middle and upper middle class buyers that want nice homes they can afford. If you’re interested in living more rural with at least an acre around you it’s possible to find something where you can’t see your neighbors as well if you look south toward Horace. Homes like this are going to be somewhere between the low 700s to 900,000 (or more) as of 2024. Give us a call or text 701-253-1872 for help getting started with finding the right home.

Born in ND, spent my Uni days in Fargo which was a step up from Minot but 👎🏼 for my adult years no reason to stay. Youth isn’t tolerated well, then when visiting as an adult no respect from so called adults a generation above mine rude AF and I live in the Bronx now but the rudeness was something I had forgotten. If you do run in to friendly people they’re probably from Minnesota. I haven’t been gone that long but there’s nothing I would want to move back for and my friends there agree with me they’re just stuck due to work or fam. If you are of color do not drive after 10pm you will be pulled over by cops trying to make a quota. Twice I was pulled over in the same night: for signaling too soon, and the second my stop at a stop sign was “iffy” as the cop told me in other words hoping I was drinking. I told one I do not drink he responded that wasn’t my question I said how much have you had to drink 🤷🏼‍♂️ when one doesn’t drink they have not had anything. And no I didn’t get arrested nor a ticket which told me each stop was opportunistic
