There's a famous quote In Indonesia "adab dulu, baru ilmu". Which is "manners first, and then knowledge". No matter how smart you are, or your education, it's nothing if you don't have manner. People will not respect you But it's sad coz so many baby boomers doesn't use that anymore. It's fade out. Sadly

I'm a Canadian who spent close to 30 years living in Indonesia, mostly Jakarta but in my early years there in Solo and Tawangmungu. I really like what this 'bule' has to say about his experience there. It brought out a wide smile to my face in a lot of what he had to say about his 'cultural' adjustment experience there. Just to clarify about the toilet bit. Yes, we use the left hand to wipe but we also use water and soap to clean it. After that, we wash our hands, again with soap. That's much cleaner than toilet paper. When I moved to London, there's no water to wipe, only toilet paper, so every time I finished number two, I took shower :) lol

The most interesting part for me was when he explain that we need to bow under the eye level. Growing up as a Javanese kid i've been told to bow a little bit, doesn't necessarily under eye level, and putting one's of your hands down (you know the form right) is just a gesture to respect another person. Usually this gesture is used whenever you cross the person older than you, to excuse yourself before them, to show some respect to the older one. And the most interesting part is, i think its translated the same almost everywhere in Indonesia.

1:08 true Pretty common in Indonesia. We had a sports day in school, was pretty fun, and at the end of the day the students who participated had to get in line and shake hands with students of other teams. I didn’t join in the activities , I just watched and cheered for my team, but from what I saw when it came to the teams shaking hands, all they did was just grab each-others hand for a split second and immediately let go afterwards, no shaking at all, some even just barely grazed each-others fingers. I’ve also experienced this outside of school when meeting business partners of my father and they would always pull back their hand before I even got to shake. It kinda annoyed me because my dad told me to shake their hand to be respectful yet they didn’t do the same.

The word bule came from albino buffalo, the Javanese call it bule, as the european came to Indonesia and their skin is different with them, they just synonim it with bule
@ryanvb3452
@ryanvb3452 4 года назад
I'm curious, has bule come to simply mean foreigner now? Because when I was in Java my friend (Pakistani) and I (Arab) were called bule the whole time. Is there a different word for non-white foreigners? Also, in Bali bule can also be pejorative as some locals (understandably) don't like tourists because they can be loud and disrespectful. In fact I have been told by some Balinese that I am not bule because I act respectfully and immerse myself in their culture. I'm keen to hear different Indonesians' use of this word.
@yesa6871
@yesa6871 4 года назад
@@ryanvb3452 in the area i live in (java), as you mentioned before, we all call foreigners 'bule'. no matter where they come from. it has no negative connotations (or at least we don't consider it negative) whatsoever, it's just a way to say foreigners in indonesian. then again i'm saying this from my experience in my area, it might be different in other cities/provinces. i hope you had a great time here!

Most bathrooms in Indonesia have showerheads. Also Indonesians don't eat dogs, there are many rescue groups in Indonesia working tirelessly to rescue those dogs, it's only a minority group that practises the barbaric act of dog meat trade/ consumption but many are working towards its prohibition. Just like there are still tribes in the jungles of Indonesia that have yet to evolve into a civilisation and they eat human.
