LIVING IN ITALY from *a local’s perspective* : having a house, moving out, paying rent &much more

I’ve thought it over a lot lately: when we picture a HOUSE in our head, what do we see? What comes to mind? What does having our own house building it, buying it, living in it mean for us? And how does this affect our LIFESTYLE?
I tried to answer these questions from an ITALIAN PERSPECTIVE*, well as an *ITALIAN GIRL LIVING IN ITALY and grown up in such context.
And Italian girl who’s about to do grown-up stuff….
-watch until the end and you’ll know what I’m talking about :)

Ciao Barbs and thank you for the video. You may remember that I have commented a couple times about moving to Florence from the USA. Well, I did it!!! I arrived in Florence yesterday. My apartment is right in the historic district in the Santa Croce neighborhood. My rent is 750 euros plus utilities for a one bedroom or biolocale. Congratulations on your move to your own apartment! ❤🇮🇹

Living on your own is the best thing, I moved into my own flat in March and I couldn’t imagine living with anyone else

I have to admit I am a bit envious of the Italian culture (I am Italian American but not originally from Italy). Here things are actually purposefully built to break down so that more money is spent again and again to replace products. Houses are sturdy but they are not built to last generation after generation and repairs are typically needed in the average American home at some point or another. Rent where I am on average is about $1200 per month for a 1 bedroom… maybe $850-$950 if you’re lucky but not including any utilities. It’s also frowned upon if you don’t move out as soon as possible. I’m 26 and I am judged for having to move back home because I could not fully support myself financially. It’s the norm for people here to move in with friends and partners because the average American cannot afford outlandish rent prices on their own + food, gas, insurance etc.

Oh wow.. I'm not familiar with the proportion salaries/costs of living, but I'd say the prices you mentioned are really really high! 😨 Don't let others judge your choices when it comes to personal finance: I'm a fan of youtuber Matt d'Avella, and one of his main advices is exactly saving on rent when you're young, if you have the chance 💯 The different "approaches" of countries to real estate are very fascinating though, I should learn more on the subject! Thanks again for leaving a comment and sharing such an accurate piece of information 🙏

Love the idea of things being built to last. Here in the US that sometimes seems less and less the case. Good luck with your next adventure.

Love this adventure! Like others mentioned, in the US, people always want change or something bigger or different. Enjoying (and repairing) what you have isn’t a popular American value anymore. Well done l’Italia!

Long time! Hows life!? I love italian buildings, how do you make everything look so bloody good!? UK houses are similarly built to last. I'd prefer to add to the story of a house than build one just for myself that gets knocked down when i'm gone!

I agree with your perspective!! It's nice that houses can tell their own stories ✨

Ciao Barbs, I live in Melbourne Australia but have a great love for Italy. I have been studying the language for many years and love learning as much as possible about the culture. We are hoping to buy a retirement home in Italy in the next couple of years where we can spend up to 6 months of the year to experience more of the lifestyle and culture and be surrounded by the language. I loved your video and your insights into the culture from an insiders perspective. I hope you are able to make more videos on this topic. Good luck with your move and new life in your own apartment.
