I noticed in the Sakura Co segment that it lists an item as "may contain traces" and it says buckwheat. I'm highly allergic to buckwheat so I'm curious how often that comes up as a possible cross contamination even if the item doesn't specifically have buckwheat?
Just a comment on Ushka and how AWESOME she is. Over a year ago, Ushka really helped me out when I was in a bind - my cat was coming in from overseas and there were complications, so my poor cat was stuck in Germany for three days, and me... stuck in Tokyo an extra three days I hadn't planned for. Ushka allowed me to stay at her air bnb in what was a very low point for me, and it's honestly one of the biggest acts of kindness I will never forget. Much to love to Ushka, and of course to you Sharla! You both always brighten my day!
@@sharlainjapan Thank goodness you didn't have to have the whole place condemned! That damage was painful to watch, and all those termite and water-damaged areas made me shudder.
@@sharlainjapan That made me LOL xD I'm trying to listen to what he said so I can understand "in-practice" use of japanese, but I can't for the life of me hear the that he is saying.. he's like やばい。やばい。やばい どこ(?)じゃなくて。すごい。すごい???? and then it all turns fuzzy o((>ω< ))o learning japanese is difficult! I gotta practice my listening skills, learn more vocab, and study up on more readings of wild kanji >.
I'm sorry to hear about the termites, glad to hear they haven't ruined the structural stability! I hope your day today is better, a video from you always makes mine better so I hope I can share that with you
Thats why I do not like wood as building material, it is too fragile and short lived! On the other hand in an earthquake prone country like japan probably wood is the best option!
Thanks for formally introducing Ushka! I absolutely love this vlog style. I love the 'day in the life' type. They are really chill and you take the time to notice and point out little things that bring you joy. This in turn helps me notice and be grateful for the little things as well. Happy spring/early summer!
Been watching your videos for almost a decade now and it’s such a good feeling to still keep up with your projects and stuff. Love your energy, Sharla! ❤wishing you the best, always
@@sharlainjapan well, I've been watching you since your trip to Bonita Bonito with your sister . I think that was my very first vlog i saw, but I have explored watching your older vlogs. 😄
I recently realized that I've been subscribed to you (across your channels) for over a decade now which is crazy to think about. I'm now finishing up a 7 month stay in Japan, heading back home to Germany in 2 weeks and just wanted to say thank you for your videos over the years that let me experience Japan even before moving here myself. The (re-)introduction of Usher reminded me to comment this as I remember the Vlog where you stayed at her first AirBnB very well! Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see the finished house!
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought Oh No there's something wrong with Sharla's health or the renovation. Glad you're OK and looking forward to seeing the completed renovation.
I'm so mad at myself that I missed the opportunity to ask Ushka a question! It would be great to hear where does she take her positivity from, she's so bubbly and cheerful 😊❤
I love how such a chill kiwi Ushka is! Id say her (and your) attitude to projects is the very Aussie "she'll be right mate". Doesn't matter how bad it seems she'll be right in the end lol. Can't wait to the see the house finished :)
I remember seeing thar vlogmas all those years ago and you both clicked immediately 💕 its so comforting to see that friendships can form in the most random situations 😊 Cant wait to see the finish house and fingers cross for the hinoki bath, much love to both
So sorry to hear about the termites, but I am glad that it is fixable! May the rest of your days be much better♡ I love follwing the house renovation by the way!😊
Sorry to see that your day on this video turned really shitty, Hope you and Ushka have better days in the future! Thank you for sharing your adventures!
I thought that vlog you met ushka in, you guys were already friends! I thought you stayed there cause you knew her already 😅 shows how well you guys work out together!!
I must admit, Ushka's accent had always eluded me, but Kiwi via British makes total sense! She's been a lovely presence on your channel, always enjoy seeing your adventures.
I always love Ushka when I started watching your vlog. She has a positive vibes and love cats!!! I really wish want to meet you guys when I go to Japan! ♥
the 80s music really shows chris' impact 😆 and i'm thrilled to hear that 222 means nyan nyan nyan. i keep seeing 222 everywhere and surely this is what the universe wants to tell me
I watched this already with my daughter, I know it's not what you gals hoped for but the structure is okay and it can be saved if it's as popular as your first inn, then you'll do great in the long run. It's the unfortunate side of reno is sometimes you don't know what you might find. Thankfully you've found it and it will be safe and restored. you have a great team and friendship/ partnership You have got this Cheering you both on it's going to be beautiful. I pray your day and perspective have improved. Sending love and well wishes.
I laughed so hard when @sharlainjapan pointed at where the termite were and the camera got blurry for a moment. It was like entering Sharla vision. haha. Home looks great! Love the choices for the bathroom.
I saved this video for morning so I can watch it before going to work. Honestly I don't know how many years I've watched your videos but I'm always waiting your videos to pop up. 😊 Thank you for making these videos! ❤
Living where I do termites are a constant issue so I feel your pain. Here is hoping they have found the whole nest and removed all if the little buggars. Oh the joys of renovation especially in an older property, always I find they are such a generous thing to restore, always prepared to give you an unexpected gift😂😂loving the vibe between you two, it is fun to watch.
I know in the states if people sell you a house and the seller knows they have termites but didn't list them, you can be subjected to getting pay back for it.
Not going to lie, I started watching Abroad in Japan long before starting to watch Sharla's channel. It has only been a few months for me. And I had no clue who Ushka was. I figured it was because I was new. But turns out I'm not alone. So I feel better 😆
I hear your pain - discovered termites in our house not long after buying it. Lost a box of my fav paperbacks to the little buggers, but managed to minimize the damage! At least you found it now, before it took the house out! Now off to shop at your website! :D
I'm looking really forward to more updates on how they build the bath, I want to put a japanese ofuro in my home in the united states for my mother. she's older now and it's getting harder for her to shower standing up. having an adjustable shower head so she can sit and then take a soak in a deeper yet shorter bath would be really good for her. the automatic reheat functions for some of these baths are pretty amazing these days.
Tough luck on the termites, that's frustrating. But, it seems like you didn't lose your head over and moved forward quickly. That's the only thing you can do if workers are on-site, just make the best decision you can and get everyone back to work. Thanks for making these renovation videos. I enjoy watching the process.
Oh god sorry to hear about the termites nuisance. I had the same issue when I moved into a new place a number of years ago, cost a ton money of to get it fixed 😭
It was so nice to finally learn more about Ushka!!! I think you guys make a great team! So I was just in Japan for a vacation (first time going) a few weeks ago Feb 2-17 and dang I just missed the Family Mart Collab. I also went to LOFT and it was so cool to see you guys go there because I was like "I WAS THERE JUST A WEEK AGO" and that felt really cool. Best of luck on the house! I hope I get to stay in it next time I book a trip to Japan.
Just had a HUGE termite swarm in my bathroom that led to a bunch of headaches with mold & plumbing problems here in Texas, so I am feeling your pain...😢 Love hour videos, and your cats! 😻
Termites are a nightmare to get rid of in Australia. If you find them in your home, you have to get a company in to find out the extent of the damage, then you have to stop construction or renovation, treat it, call the people back in to see if it worked, do the preventative annual spraying and then get back to renovation/construction. That, all together, could take a month.
So impressed with how fast the builders worked. Bummer about the termites. Pixel is exactly like our Pepsi, black cats have the best personality in my biased opinion
So funny, I just happened to be looking at your web store just before you were uploading. You stated that you were having problems because the site had been moved. I thought that it was my fault until I realized that this was recorded sometime before you uploaded the video. Had me feeling bad for a minute. By the way, you guys are a great match, I really enjoy your content videos!
I am so glad you did a lil Q+A for Ushka!! I subscribed in late 2019 and when Ushka started showing up, I had been wondering who she was/how y'all had met... but I also assume she'd been introduced before I subscribed so I was like "I missed it, too bad for me! I'll figure it out from the context!" My headcanon I invented was that you two had been friends forever! I guess I'm not too far off, but I appreciate the proper backstory 😁
I have had doubts about the hinoki baths; there seems to be a bit of space around them that would cause water to remain trapped and cause mold. Please ask about it. It might be better to make it all ceramic or a shower, otherwise you need enough space around it for air circulation and your arm to clean that area. This is sometimes a problem when people put standing baths in overly tight spaces for looks, and then they are stuck with this problem.
Aww. Sorry to hear about the termite and water damage. That's certainly a common thing in older homes, as they simply didn't employ any sort of vapour-barriers. I wouldn't be surprised if your builders have to rent some hydraulic jacks for a few days while they work on fitting the new supports. You may also, if there's any room left in the budget, carefully inspect the flashing around the exterior of the windows to ensure something like this isn't happening to the exposed south and west sides of the house. Good luck~! We're cheering for you~!!
Does make me wonder somewhat what they'll do to keep the *rain* out of that space if they push the windows in. (Also the source of the damp/wet inside there, is the tub going to have shower? Did people dry dripping clothes there? Just airborne moisture? I assume they know what they're about, but I feel like maybe putting flashing under the tiles there and ventilating better might be a better solution. Maybe putting a bit of slope in the bottom so water can't collect there, and a glass shelf or two to decorate or get a little utility out of. (That alley wall always did seem like it might be a moisture issue to me. )
yay, have been waiitng for the home reno update, i'm so curious to know how they'll resolve the termite issue! I just love watching how the contractors are ripping the walls etc apart lol!
I got a Sakuraco box subscription because of watching you open yours in the past. I have loved my first two weeks. I can't wait for the Sakura themed box!
I've been watching your videos for years, and this might be my first comment. Just wanted to say I always look forward to your videos, they are light and joyful and really well made. Please update more often haha ! All the best Sharla and hope to see you one day in Japan (I come for work twice a year maybe ill try to stay at the inn next time !)
Sorry about the house Sharla, but at least you found out now and can plan for it during the renovation, rather then when they are about to put the new stuff in. Good Luck! Love Pixel and Pippen!
I hope you put a list of food recommendations around the new place for guests when it opens. Cuz that sushi looks delicious but no way I’d remember that place by the next time I’d visit
I would tend to be pragmatic about the hinoki bath. Yes, it is gorgeous but not thousands of dollars worth for a place that you are not going to live in yourself. So perhaps, that considered, the heartbreak might not be as devastating. Plain Japanese bathrooms can be gorgeous, too. Renos are always unpredictable. So glad it's not the end of the house, but just more money, as harsh as that prospect is.
I hope the RU-vidr that will review the old emergency food is Ashens! 😆👏 Loving the house renovation videos. Ushka is so nice and smiley, I love her. 🙂
Termites are a nightmare to deal with when you buy a new home. I really feel for you guys. I’m so thankful we had an inspector look at our house before we bought it because he found termites as well and the sellers had to foot the bill.
I am so sorry to hear about the termite damage. I loved the stationery store, I am so obsessed with stationery and also adore sukura and all types of blossom. I can't wait for blossoms here in the UK.
