I grew up in Worcester in the 60s it really was not a bad place to live, we walked Down Town from Vernon Hill at night and never thought nothing of it. The Old Down Town was great all the stores on Main St. Franklin and Front St. It really was the hustle and bustle of the city, boy have times changed

There are lots of pros. They all work on Hollis Street, off of South Main. It's a very scenic area. Worcester is a great place to be from. I did have a mostly fun childhood. Public schools were pretty decent. My grade school dated back to the Civil War era. That's a living history experience. Not a lot of kids today get that. I also learned to swear listening to drivers stuck in snow banks outside of our house. Hills and snow are a bad combination. I remember some epic snowball fights. Worcester was full of characters, with a genuinely funny accent.

I remember all the people would move to Worcester because of low rent, cheap housing prices and only 1 hour drive to Boston, Springfield or even Providence! Now for the same reason, rents & home prices have dramatically increased in Worcester and it's suburbs. Thanks for the vid Matt.

Broadmeadow Brook off of Massasoit rd. is a new favorite hiking spot for different trails in Worcester that I just discovered last spring 2022 absolutely beautiful and many different trails to take with your young kids. Here we are in January 2023 and we have gotten a total of 2.5 inches of snow since December and I love the snow. 😢 I remember sledding every winter with my friends and my father, flying down Greenhill park and whipping down Quinsigamond college hills, back in the 80’s and 90’s. Those were the days. ❤❤❤ Worcester = ❤ Home 😊

@bn3121

It's definitely interesting that Worcester, MA is pronounced the same way as Worcester, UK. New England is truly an apt name! I will say though as a fellow Brit I think it's silly to suggest any particular region defines the "correct" pronounciation of English words (let alone proper nouns such as place names). I consider it a point of pride that the English language does not have, nor does it need, any "official" rules or pronunciation guidelines, in contrast to for example French, which is precisely (dare I say tyrannically😉) regulated by the Académie Française. Thus our English speaking friends in Europe, America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania are each equally valid in their regional pronunciations and spellings!

There are still great places to live on Long Island! I just left it 3 years ago to live up here in MA. This state is Much better than NYC Any day.NH is very good too but way more cold so you’ve got to weigh it out all out Man. I’m Never moving back to NY. In the end, I’ll be going east toward the Mass coast or the Cape. It’s more like an unpretentious Long Island. I find this subscription very helpful and fun. Matt is quite quirky! And Tyler keeps him grounded wrt the time and content. They’re a good combination. In all fairness, you DO need more Berkshire and Hampshire county videos. It’s very pretty here. We'd shovel out our house, then shovel out our grandparents house, and when we got back home, our driveway was plowed in, so we'd shovel it out again, while my sister and mom would get to stay inside and make us lunch, a ham sammy and Campbell's Tomato soup. Sister got of easy, but now she's fat, so I guess life acknowledged her lack of effort.

Worcester is a humblest environment. There’s a lot of things to do but you just have look and has a lot to offer. be adventurers.I went to heckler it closed was supposed to graduate before closing but transferred to another dchool.but it’s expensive. You might get lost on Worcester roads but it’s easy to navigate. Boston is complicated to get through tiny roads. But I would say that if your not an area of course getting lost. But also when people move out of Worcester they often come back but has a lot to offer.

I've lived in Worcester for 2 years (the past 2 years, moved out for work). Although I lived there mostly through the pandemic, the post-pandemic times were one of the best I've had. There are lots of things to do in this relatively small city and at the same time it doesn't have the hustle and bustle of big cities. You can catch a game at the Polar Park, lots of hiking trails and parks, good clubs(I used to go to a standup that was done regularly at Park Grill, Park Ave), great and diverse food options and very friendly people (except for massholes!). The great hiking trails of NH is just an hour's drive away. If you are craving big city, Boston is 50 minutes away! If you are craving a bigger city, NYC is 3.5 hours away! The rents can be low if you are willing to share apartments. I and many other grad students like me were paying 400+ utilities, but I would imagine you would be paying something like 1200 for an apartment of your own (one of my friends lived in a great place like that in downtown with its own tennis court, swimming pool, fireside place, coffeehouse, bbq, etc). Pretty good deal if you ask me. If I had a work-from-home job, Worcester would definitely be top5.
@shrutidhapodkar6956
@shrutidhapodkar6956 2 года назад
From grad student point of view. Does the location matter much? Or the university? I got admit in pace University in NY and Clark University and I'm confused as to which one to choose because clark is a better school and pace is in a better location.
@livinginmassachusetts25
@livinginmassachusetts25 2 года назад
That depends on the individual. Personally both of those things ultimately played into my decision back when I went to grad school. Ask yourself, do you want to work or live in the same state after grad school? If so, location will make a significant impact.
@jibran4794
@jibran4794 2 года назад
@@shrutidhapodkar6956 If having a good time during those 2 years is a priority, then location is VERY important. As for working, if you are opting for something like data science which can be done remotely, location is not a factor at all. You can get a job anywhere in the states. I could tell you something about my post-pandemic time in Worcester apart from what I already wrote up there. Some of these things are specific to WPI and I am not quite sure if they would apply to Clark. As an Indian grad student, most of your friend circle (about 80-90%) would be Indian. This sucks , in my opinion, and I initially thought the Indian students are stupid to not engage with the diversity of the place, but I was mistaken. There are multiple reasons for this, foremost being roommates and the course choices we make as a result of hearsay. Indian students generally tend to find each other to be compatible roommates and also because the South Asian community is so well-connected, it is another Indian they eventually end up with when co-signing a lease. Further, as I mentioned, course gossip. Many Indian students end up taking the same course at the same time, Practical reasons again; helping each other out (not cheating, mind you, that's taken very seriously here), the Indian alumni telling them that the particular course is good, etc. Also, the graduate student population, especially in tech courses (which is what Indians go for) are overwhelmingly Indian/Chinese. Americans largely are found in undergrad. That being said, you would still end up getting a lot of non-Indians as teammates or something else. But you would have to go out of your way to make close friendships with them; of the kind you would have with other Indians. Many Indians just deem it unfruitful and stick to status quo and I don't think it is unreasonable on their part to do so. We all came here for a more important reason! Again, as I said this would be for WPI, my instinct tells that it would pretty much the same for Clark for the same reasons, but you are better off talking to someone there. As for doing things, NYC beats Worcester any-day, but your location matters, no matter which of the 5 boroughs you end up in NYC or even Jersey City if you choose to live there instead and commute to Pace everyday. I have a soft spot for Worcester for the reasons I mentioned above. There was nothing you couldn't get in Worcester, despite it being a small city. You just have to get out more (something a lot of Indian students did not do) and explore. If you have a driving license, it is a big PLUS! You have many relatively cheap car rentals here that make it easy to go on trips. The weather's pretty much the same in both places, with Worcester's winter being a tad bit harsher (but also beautiful, lol) and the Fall season is always beautiful in New England.

We had nice neighbors and there were lots of cool kids in the neighborhood to hang out with. I never want to live in a three decker again. I live in a high rise in NYC now, built of solid concrete, so I rarely Here my neighbors. Our favorite summer activity was when the across the street neighbors would fight, and the wife would throw dishes out the window at the husband. It was always the highlight of summer vacation. The crime is out of control and people are just straight slobs. Too many absentee landlords which makes properties uncared for and really slummy ! Worcester sold itself to the highest bidders and pushed the families that help build this city out of it...!!!

It really depends on which part you're looking in. It is a surprisingly big city so there are rough parts and other places that are shockingly nice. We always reccomend checking crime maps online...there are a couple of resources that the city police department can refer you to.

@@livinginmassachusetts25 City police are not allowed to discuss "high crime areas" if you call in and simple ask which sections of ANY city are high crime, but there are resources out there you can use.

You're absolutely right, that's what i mean. I always call the station and ask what website they suggest to track local reports and calls. Some cities around here use a website called crime mapping, others don't.

I lived in Worcester for two years. Simply. Awful. Place. Terrible roads. Crime. Unfriendly people. Ugly skyline. Crime. No sidewalks or bike trails. Guaranteed horrible winters. Crime. he only thing it has going for is that it's an hour to Boston or Providence.
