What are you still wondering about Newton?

How's walking or biking in Newtown? I don't drive and a friend of mine lives in Newton Highlands and she's asking me to be roommates with her. She loves it there and says I will too because it is a liberal town. What I'm wondering is it pedestrian friendly?

Actually the 13 villages are very much defined. It is true that some are well known and others are not. some of the villages such as Newton corner and nonantum are more working class neighborhoods whereas others contain the more wealthier neighborhoods.

*not Jon* Having grown up in Newton (Newton Highlands and Auburndale) it is a really nice place to live. BUT it is VERY VERY expensive. My mother's house was a normal Colonial, no master bathrooms or anything like that and it is worth almost 800,000 thousand. Houses on the side streets go upwards of 1 mill. Also, the entitlement and snobbery of some of the people who think they are better than others because they live there is a bit much. Personally, I am glad I moved away to a smaller more down to earth town.

Totally fair points. It's beautiful but definitely can be a tough suburb to break into. Where did you end up moving once you left Newton?

@@LivingBoston I lived in Needham on South st for 5 years, then bounced around the south shore (attleboro, briefly Sharon, South Norwood for 3 years) before settling in Plainville. Been here for almost 10 years and really like how it is a smaller town but close to a LOT of things to do.

@@02ujtb00626 That's awesome! What did you like / dislike about those places in the south shore? Always love hear locals' perspectives when they've been around a bunch of places here

@@LivingBoston well the number one thing I like about this area is that it is much cheaper to live here than the metro area without sacrificing convenience. Speaking of Plainville, we have rt. 1, 495, 295, I-95 and rt 1a (which I live on). We have a small family town vibe but are still close to a lot of hustle and bustle. The other towns were nice, but depending on the areas of those towns you lived in it could be dicey. South Norwood started to become worse with drugs, so bye to that. Attleboro had very strong "lines" where you could tell the trashy/bad parts from the good parts really easily. I like Plainville because it is a good balance between working class and "professionals" for lack of a better word. It reminds me of Burlington where my father lived for years. Another great thing about the south shore is that you can typically always find affordable housing without going too far into the boonies. Although, since Plainridge Park Casino and The Unlikely Story opened up the cost of living has gone up a bit. My rent at the start was 900/month heat included. Heat is still included but is now 1150/month for my one bedroom (I have no kids, just me and my partner and a cat so no need for anything bigger really). Still affordable though.

@@LivingBoston oh also, it only takes about 40-45 minutes to get to Newton if I feel like visiting old haunts. I was at Cabots in Newtonville about a week ago. I highly recommend them btw., especially if you like ice cream. One thing to note about Plainville is that as of 2020, the average house price was 310,000, so it is relatively easier to get into home ownership down here.

NEWTON: Terrible roads, sky high property taxes, sky high rent, sky high home prices, traffic, rude entitled people If I was younger I would get out of here so fast. Believe me I know.....lived here 67 years. Many years ago it was a great place to live. Now you better be a millionaire.
