As a black man in nyc trying to move to Portland, I asked one of my friends from Portland why do you guys love hiking so much? He told me he didn’t get it as well at first too (he’s from Idaho) but when he visited “Crater Lake” he said it change him and he’s never ask why again and never will. So I guess it’s about the journey, health benefits, and what you potentially could be hiking towards that make it worth it. One thing is for sure, I now really want to visit crater lake.
😭 I’m just not a nature person. The outdoors is never gonna do it for me but crater lake is dope. There’s a lot of cool places out here that I can enjoy once or twice but I don’t see myself needing to hike every weekend like the ppl here
As a black man for myself I wanted to move there I'm 23 and I'm in my career for engineering and I was looking for day in the life of Portland I kept scrolling and scrolling and then I just ran across your video you have gained a subscriber and hopefully when I move there I think your chill to hang around. Thx brodie
I'm going to be moving to the Portland area from California on the 1st of April. I'm really excited and hopefully. I'll be able to find success in the server industry as well as food. Thank you so very much for the information
I'm in the same boat man. This real estate agent breaks down major areas of Portland, OR that have high concentrations of the food and hospitality scene. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ljFfZCdVFkI.html Hopefully it helps you narrow down which area you should start searching for jobs in. Good luck!
only corporate landlords please 🙏.... i rent out a couple spots and charge below market price, enough to pay the mortgage and savings for future repairs... i don't charge late fees and let people be. renting can help people if done right 👍🏽
I would imagine all the tents must be sold out by the looks of downtown lol. No, but camping is all ppl talk about out here. I’m not about that life yet but I hear the camping is great. Plenty of space for it and lots of great nature
I lived in Portland for about 10 years and you nailed it! Moved back east in 2018. But I miss it sometimes. People have dogs cuz they bark. They bark when your bike is stolen or when someone has mistaken your package on the porch for theirs. Weed stores and food trucks are mostly superb. IMHO Nice vid and thank you for entertaining me. BTW who IS Amine?
Thank you !!! I am getting transferred for work and my husband and I were concerned. He is black and I am Latina and so many people have told us that there are no people of color. We are taking a trip this month to check it out like you said, wish us luck
Hey! Thank you for watching 😇 definitely not the most diverse city but there’s still lots of things to do and to discover. Love that you’re taking a trip to check the city out before the move. Wishing you all the best
Great content Bro.. I'm a tech Bro.. Hiking is an IT person's safe space. It gets us active, moving, with less stress than lifting, with more fun. Our backs, knees, hips, are dying for us to move
Thank you so much for tuning in! I really wish I could provide an update but I’m in a contract currently that goes against that sort of content. But as soon as that’s up, I promise I’ll speak more on it
I moved to Portland in 96 for my job in Lake Oswego/Tualatin. My Lord!!! I was the only Black guy at my job and Lake Oswego too. I lived in Portland for 4 years. During the summer months, I would go to Cannon Beach and spend 2 weekends a month there at the Tolovano Inn. I'm originally from New York(Queens) so I would go to Seattle when the Yankees were in town. Not many hangout spots after 1am..I didn't like that.
Nice video, the cons are overstated, I have lived in Portland for 35 years and there’s definitely plenty of problems but it’s often very exaggerated. Overall I love the city. Like all cities there are definitely issues.
Great and honest video! Queens born & raised, but lived in CT, NC & NJ. I visited Portland in 2021 and it was nice, but my group definitely felt like the only Black & Latine people there 😅 The homeless population was bigger than we thought & very vanilla, it was an experience. Thinking about a move to Portland next year, since it’s cheaper to live there than in L.A., Santa Monica or San Francisco. Any areas in Portland you recommend? Or to avoid? Downtown, Slabtown, etc?
Hey Delilah thank you so much for watching! There’s some cool areas right outside of downtown like the Pearl district. Great food and scene there. South East is a great area to live. Lots of houses you can rent too. I don’t think you necessarily have to avoid any areas but the population of junkies is definitely higher in downtown/Chinatown. But weird activity can happen anywhere in Portland
Interesting your take on the lack of law enforcement due to the junkies being white. I don’t agree with you as that’s the root cause, but my perspective is gonna be quite different from yours. I’m a native, born and raised, so it is always interesting to hear an outsider’s perspective.
I was stating that the lack of law enforcement here exists because this is a primarily white area. It’s designed for whites to do whatever they want… however, they just want to do meth
@@MouseOnFeet The police do nothing about most crime nowadays because they are trying to punish the city for the BLM protests. "Oh, you think police should be held accountable for brutality? Well, we'll stop enforcing the law then, and let's see how you like THAT!" Before the BLM protests, Portland police were pretty tough on (mostly white) druggies.
@MouseOnFeet yeah fuck Portland. Portland assholes are mostly white. Portland always preaches diversity yet there's no damn diversity here, it's all just a bunch of fat green hair white lesbians.
Glad I stumbled across this video. I moved up here about 18 months ago after living in SF for 20+ years. One of our biggest complaints (other than the junkies) is also how early so many restaurants close. I live & work close to downtown, so I’m fortunate enough to be able to walk to work, but even if I had to drive I wouldn’t wa to to leave my Subaru (😂) downtown. Where is Amine?
I’m living in South Carolina right now, but my family was military so I was in Florida, California, Virginia, Hawaii, etc. I’m not a big fan of where I am and I’m thinking of moving after school (if everything goes well), but I don’t want to jump into a city and make a big mistake. I love the Pacific Coastline and Portland is just beautiful, but what you said about the homeless people and the police makes me… eh… I’m young! I want to go somewhere exciting, but not carjacking exciting. And thanks for making this video! People that want to move around like me always appreciate your insight and advice.
Ive lived here 25 years. Portland is a revolving door of naive do gooders who don't know where to draw the line. Hence junkies. :( But it still has many amazing qualities so there you go. Your videos are funny too. Keep it up.
Honestly, regarding the food, unless you live in Portland proper you’ll probably never experience anything that special. I lived in LA previously (not from CA so don’t freak out natives!) and there’s SO many more options and they’re everywhere! Yeeess everything closes so early it’s so frustrating!!! And no alcohol in the grocery store. You have to make a special trip to a liquor store. It’s dumb.
Absolutely. The food here has blown me away. So many good places to pick from. I’ll never get used to things closing so early but it makes me appreciate visiting home even more.
Your Portland videos are so honest and helpful for us (born and raised in Brooklyn), thank you for sharing! We're thinking of moving to Portland and agree with literally everything you've said. What brought you out there? Which neighborhoods would you recommend?
😇 Thank you so much for tuning in! I was tired of how expensive NY was and wanted to experience the West Coast I’m a huge fan of the Pearl district. There’s some good apartments , restaurants and bars in that area. SE has a lot of cool houses for rent and tons of food. And if you want to get a bit out of the way, Hillsboro is a cool suburb
Hi Kelly! I feel horrible bc I have no idea where the Berg is 😅 is that like Pittsburgh? I’m guessing not because of the way it’s spelled lol But thank you so much for watching! 💕💕
Your take on lack of enforcement is interesting and made me consider if the same is going on in my city, Philadelphia. We have a well known fentanyl/opioid area called Kensington where people pretty much are homeless and use drugs openly. They are majority white and from the suburbs of Philly. We already know about the racially motivated difference in how cocaine and crack sentencing went but it’s just blatant how hands off law enforcement is with the opioid epidemic
Absolutely! I have a weird suspicion that this is going on to a lesser degree in a lot of cities. The tv show The Wire spoke about zones that were supposed to be off limits for cops to interfere with users and Portland is definitely a version of that
@Mouse On Feet To be fair, Phx is the 5th largest city in the U.S. ..huge food scene, sports city and the proximity to L.A ,Vegas and Mexico all within 5 hours driving. Winters are rarely below 50 degrees and never rains...this year's super bowl is here again for the 3rd time.
I relocated for a job. I am a Director of Development for a nonprofit that serves the homeless. If you are from a place where African Americans are progressive thinking and have strong black organizations that serve the community this is not Portland. As a person from the East Coast, specifically the Washington DC Metro area, you will find community but the point of making a place your home is to find BELONGING. It is shocking to me how black folk don't value education and understand it as a way to gain some momentum in this area. This place is very prejudiced, I do the work here so I know. It is not cheaper to live (cheaper than Caili/New York) gas is expensive, food is overpriced, housing well that depends on what you are looking for. Being single and young might work but as a Balck family or couple, give some thought to what you want your children to know about who they are: they will not learn it in this school system. I DO NOT GET WHY FOLK LIKE THE FOOD HERE...I am a Southerner and these folk cannot make soul food Mexican food and Chinese food...There is no Mambu Sauce. I am missing intellectually stimulating conversations with folk who look like me. Looking forward to making my way back home at the end of this year.
Great vid bruh 💯 we need more blacks to migrate to Portland 😂 tht should be a movement or sum lbs but yes great information to think about before makin tht move !!
Do you know why there isn’t that many blk in Portland in Portland?? Lolhh man y’all have to do y’all research to understand why. But beside that. It’s a whole lot of blk ppl that in Portland. It’s not like the south. But it’s lots of blks that in Portland…
@@DashBorad_P lol of course. Portland has a pretty racist past, present and future…. Really, the whole United States has an extremely anti-black past. But that hasn’t stopped us from going to other cities
I haven't seen any Portland videos for awhile. Do you have any updates, especially now that the city is supposedly shutting down the drugs and trying to get rid of the tents?
Glad to hear you’re visiting Portland. I think there’s a lot you can do in 4 days. The city is small and you can cover a lot of ground. If you have an itinerary beforehand, it only makes it smoother but four days is plenty of time to enjoy Portland
@@LMiraculous 😭 not very diverse. You won’t be the only black person… I’m here lol. Nah, there’s a few black ppl out here. You just might not see them represented everywhere you go
I am moving there this summer first week of august you got any suggestion on any apps I can network and find the 🌿man im coming from the east coast In maryland
Nice video. I'm white but it still surprises me how white Oregon is, even in their "major city". Oregon looks very beautiful but I'm not outdoorsy, just like a nice view and being around that many white people would make me uncomfortable. I've never lived in a city that's even half white, let alone 90+%. I suppose it's good that the lack of diversity hasn't affected the food options though. What other cities in Oregon have you visited?
I’ve lived here since 2006. If my husband didn’t have to stay here I would move. It is a beautiful place though if you enjoy nature. We’re always camping and going on road trips. And yeah I’m always the only black person wherever I go. Fortunately, my friends of 11 years are mostly black. So I we get together when possible. Being an introvert helps😂
As a white Portlander I can vouch that I’m scared shitless of the police or to commit a crime. I don’t do drugs and I know they don’t criminalize drugs but that goes for all races. Don’t hit someone or commit a traffic offense.
Portland had way more nightlife before the pandemic so lots has changed. I disagree that crime is accepted because of skin color. And the comment about letting junkies on the bus was strange. How do they know who to not let on the bus? So someone looks like they have a drug addiction and the bus driver says not you. Interesting perception but some of it was weird. Saying black people do not exist out here is not true and bizarre but ok. All you have to do is look at the stats and it's already known there are more white people out here but that doesn't mean people of color don't exist here. Portland is not what it was before, right now, it's not the same city at all. We didn't use to have tents everywhere. It got out of hand during the pandemic and now we are struggling to get it back where it was. People do not like or trust the police because many of them cited or were friends with Proud boys and much of that thought of the police hasn't changed.
Thanks for watching Amanda. I’ve lived in a lot of big cities and I’m just calling it as I see it. In any city with a greater population of Black people, the things going on in Portland wouldn’t be possible because since their existence Police are around to terrorize Blacks and drag us back to the plantation. The system only works for them to disappear in Portland bc of the population. And as wrong as it sounds, you can tell what these junkies look like. If you’re in New York riding an MTA bus, the driver is not letting a junkie on. It’s for the safety of the paying customers. I was talking about Black people. Not “people of color”. We’re not treated the same and are not the same. Obviously you can find Black people here but when you go to a real city, it’s much more prevalent that you find Black people. Lastly, it must be great to not trust the police because of something like that. Black people don’t trust police because they kill us. And we’ll never have the ability to just have them moved out of our neighborhoods
There’s more ppl in those parts of Cali so I don’t doubt that they have a big homeless issue, but the problem in Portland is, the city allows these homeless junkies to do whatever they want. They run things here
Hiking and the outdoors is one of the few reasons anyone would willingly put up with homeless and junkies everywhere. If all you like to do is eat food and stay inside you can do that anywhere.
So theres basically nothing to do besides stay home learn to cook play the game if i dont wanna be outside all the time or creat youtube content ? I visited there before ran into few homeless and also had ran into few ppl that love politics so def u hit things right from your prospective
This is true. Homelessness is a major issue in the states. But the ppl in Portland, I can’t even call them homeless ppl. They’re homeless by choice. They’re doing heavy drugs and deciding to live on the street causing problems
No doubt about it. I made these videos thinking of ppl in similar situations to me, moving from a big city like NY, LA, Toronto and showing that you can get great value in a living space
Lack of African American in the Pacific northwest. Not cool. Maybe if you spend all your time in the downtown Portland area is fine but anyplace outside of it is majority white 90% +. I stayed in Oregon for 6 months from Portland Sellwood area all the way down to Eugene oregon. No blacks. Even stayed in Vancouver Washington for awhile and still no blacks. This is fine for the blacks who prefer being the token black but if you have a comfort level in seeing those that look like you, then the Pacific northwest is not for you. Stay clear of Oregon and Washington state unless you are strictly staying within the large city area of Portland oregon and Seattle Washington because the suburbs and rural areas will let you know your unwelcomed. So the trips to the costal beach areas and mountains will prove to be not so happy adventures.
For the most part, that’s been my experience. Black ppl seem spread out in Portland and don’t take up the space you would expect them to with all the BLM signs. Saddens me to hear that this is the same for parts of Washington too
Man y’all need to stop this shit about there’s no blk in portland.. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 man I live in portland for 16 years. And that’s all I kick it with was blk ppl. They have all blk church I use attend. Grant high school and Jeff high school is majority, black, and Hispanic. In Roseville.… come on and Seattle has lots of blk ppl up that way… y’all slacking man.. smh and most of the homeless ppl isn’t junkie. Portland really doesn’t have a mental health hospital for them ppl. Now it’s lots of meth head that’s homeless. But that’s not the point. The point is. US BLK PPLE ARE EVERYWHERE. Including portland Oregon
@@MouseOnFeet my husband's family live near the Portland area and when the BLM protests/riots was happening out there it was mainly white people. I'm not sure if they were genuine about supporting the black community or they had their own agenda.
History lesson: Oregon was literally set up to be the Mississippi of the West. This explains why Portland is a bit of a liberal island floating in fairly xenophobic state. I’ve been here 25 years and am a Eurasian male that occasionally gets mistaken as being indigenous, it seems to be getting better in regards to getting some color amongst the vast sea of whiteness but we’ve got a long way to go. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_Oregon
Bro im moving from pg county maryland to Milwaukee oregon on the 31st of this month ill be right outside of portland the job opportunity and the cheapness is what drew me to moving their
Love how honest you are in this, we’re thinking about moving to Portland but I’m honestly not too excited about it, I feel very uneasy in any space where I don’t see people that look like me and also thank you for addressing that poc comment and saying I’m black, I hate when people say poc, this is not the 60’s.
Thanks for tuning in. It’s definitely a tough adjustment when you’re used to being around your own kind and having ppl to relate to on a daily basis but it’s manageable. If you’re already headed out here, just make the most of it and try to strengthen the Black community here
Okay let’s back track just a lil bit.. before the whole gentrification thing happens. Portland had the own neighborhood. And still do somewhat. It’s in North portland. The villa. Aka the vill.. lot of blk ppl stay over there. It’s lots of blk that in north portland in general.. now the whole thing about blk ppl don’t exist here? What do you mean? Plz elaborate? Cause you can look at that multiple way…….. so have you ever been to chucks or jacks?
North Portland for sure has the greatest amount of blacks. But even in my experience being there, I was still mostly seeing white people. Like I said, you can find black ppl in Portland but it’s like you have to search for them. You can go a whole day in parts of Portland without seeing black ppl. Chucks is cool. Never been to Jacks
@@MouseOnFeet okay if you want to break it down like that.. there ain’t that many blk ppl on the west coast in general. Oregon Washington California Nevada Arizona Idaho. It’s mainly white nd Hispanic. Blk ppl are out numbered on the west. See you come New York where on the east nd Midwest nd the south where’s the mostly blk pple…. So no matter where you move to on the west. You won’t find that many blk ppl.. now let me back track real quick. If you would of been out there in Portland almost 15-20 years ago. When I was there. You would of saw hella back… we move back of how high the rent went up.. but we’re there. We just scattered all around..
I live here and this is all true lol, especially the part about everything closing early. Just about everything closes around 8pm, and the only things that remain open are bars. If you like to drink then this place will be heaven for you, but if you don't drink and like to go to lounge like spaces to socialize and meet people, then that's going to be hard to find after 8-9pm. Another thing to mention is that Portland overall has a lot of introverted passive people, who might be friendly to you, but they usually won't go out of their way to become your friend. So if you if you want to make friends here, you will have to be proactive and take the initiative to invite people out and such. Another thing to mention is that Portland has the highest population of black people in the entire state of Oregon, which is only about 6%. While white people are around 75%. So you are not going to see many black people here, and even less outside of Portland. If you're looking to make black friends then it can be hard. And if you prefer to date black people, than that can be hard too. I'm a black guy and I prefer black women, but from my personal experiences here, many of the black women here who are really liberal (and that's most of them), only date white guys. So there's that. It wasn't this bad before 2020, but since then the city has declined a lot. Thanks for making this video and sharing your perspective.
I grew up on the Oregon Coast and moved to Portland in '99. How early Portland closes for the most part has been a struggle. When I visited NY and Toronto I was like, everything is available all the time! This is great! Most restaurants in PDX close at 9pm on weekdays which is a bummer if you want late, late? Late night eats past 10pm. The geographic beauty of the region will always be a draw for a lot of people. This Portlander doesn't have a Subaru but a Honda. I do have a dog....and a horse. I have Nike ACGs and Converse All Star (Bugs Bunny furry edition for his 80th bday), Cool vid! Blessed adventures to where your life takes you!
hey bro whats the vintage sneakers & clothes (vintage/designer) scene like out there? and dating like how is the gyatss out there? i see you dropped a few like nike HQ(!)and adidas hq (fire af) but im looking for new and rare things im from ATL, im black and 25.
There’s tons of resellers and vintage sellers out here who have cool collections. Every now and then there’s pop up markets at places like Pioneer Square Mall where people are selling old and sometimes rare gear.
Thank you for acknowledging the difference between "people of color" and Black people. And thank you for sharing your perspective as a fellow Black man.
Just curious... What city do you think might be a better fit for you? I'm also considering a move to Portland but have resisted it for a few years due to some of the things you mentioned. I lived in SF / Oakland for 16 years until 2015 and still miss the diverse art scene and culture and feeling on the street that used to be there. Eventually it got so expensive that the concentration of culture/freaks/diversity eventually moved away and tons of established community centers and businesses went with clearing the way for the tech invasions. I've lived in a few places since then, but nothing really scratches the itch like it used to. Maybe I'm just getting a little older and a little jaded? Anyway, your videos were helpful. Hope you continue to be inspired where you are.
@@MouseOnFeet I generally hate the saying, "it is what it is," but...I withheld judgment for a full year. This is a great place for many folks and yes, even black people but it will depend on where you are from and your needs. I am a Howard Grad and a DC metro-raced girl who is forward-thinking. I miss being able to catch the train up to New York for a weekend with my girls and I hate the constant search for community. I too will make the best of it well I am here.
I’m from Atlanta and I’m thinking about moving to Portland for a change. But the J’s (junkies) out there seems like a epidemic. I’m definitely bout to visit next month before I move.
What's a nice fuckying video, but your side on complaining about walking cooking your own food and dogs haha I thought it was funny. I understand, big city. But I'm on the otheteside
