For dental work, you can go to the dental school clinic at the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine. Almost all the students speak English. And they do appointments. And the program also has foreign trained dentists going through revalidación to be licensed in the US so there are very experienced dentists as well. The prices are good but it does take a while since the professors need the check off the steps of the procedures as they are done.
Thank you for the great information. My wife and I are planning to go back to retire in Puerto Rico and although I am puertorican I left when I was young over 20 years ago when I didn't have to worry about health insurance and all of that. I will continue to watch your videos so that I am prepared for retirement in the beautiful Isla del Encanto.
I still keep my main medical practitioner in the state's every six months we return and have full dental and medical examination and return to Puerto Rico. We do keep a local doctor for emergency only. Our medical benefits do cover medical expenses if we are out of state.
Regarding the ambulances, every municipality is supposed to have at least one ambulance, but the truth is many have them broken. Outside de metro area, medical services can be harder. Is very common to be in the waiting area of a doctor office in San Juan and find patients from Ponce or Guayanilla (a 2+ hours by car). For emergencies services, not always the paramedics will ask. They know, for example, a possible brain stroke should be send to the specific hospitals that has the proper technology and personnel.
Lo mismo aqui en Georgia. Same here in Georgia. 20 minutes ride on an ambulance cost $800 + since we called 911 we got firemen and police. Police didn't charged but we got a bill of $1200 from the Fire Department. Then couple of hours on ER, JUST LIKE 2-4 HOURS cost $3000. I'll be more than happy to bring my own pillows and blankets in PR! It is waaayyy cheaper. I have been on an ER in PR and I needed to pay just the ER co-pay of $10 and that's it. My insurance cost was 160.00 a month.. That's a steal.
Dentist are cheaper compared to USA, for example, a zirconia crown - $700 approx. Many people travel from USA to PR for dental services. Doctors here have the same federal requirements than the USA. All doctors in PR are supposed to speak English but the nurses and staff is another story. About the laboratories, some have the option of allowing you to download your results so you don’t have to pick them up.
Hi 👋 Jen i hope you like my country i live in the south of PR, and go to my appointment every 3 month for my condition and never have no problems with my health care plan. great Doctor 🥼 Specialist and good hospital 🏥 sooo enjoy 😊 all my country ok 👍 bless you and kisses
As my hoping to survive without full car insurance or house insurance. Made of concrete. Roof is cement. On east side of Puerto Rico. I can't afford it. After trying to pay for health two different plans. No hurricanes coverage for cement house.
My dearest Jen. Love all your videos. I was born in Arecibo Puerto Rico and am planning on retiring there with my other half. If I may ask... Have you ever heard of Carmen Jovet? She is a jem for health care in Puerto Rico. She may be able to help you and your friends maximize your medical plan and also address some of your concerns on the radio and just maybe they can help fix some of the issues that still exist with Puerto Rico's health care. Again thank you for the wonderful videos. If you need to know more please feel free to let me know.
The best insurance coverage in PR is Triple S. I have more details and information about cost, coverage, and Doctors on my full blog post at jentheredonethat.com/healthcare-in-puerto-rico/
I live in NYC and my wife had an emergency for which I had to call the ambulance to take her 20 blocks to Bellevue Hospital, two weeks later I received a bill for $375.00 even though she's over 65 and has Medicare and GHI, and it was a City Ambulance, I tried to dispute it and at the end I had to pay $175.00 out of pocket.
Med. Co-payment for generics is $5.00 no matter the Co. So medicine is ok here. To see a doctor most offices open at 8am and you sign a list and then you wait. Also if you go to a CDT. centro de diagnostico y tratamiento... There you have doctor, labs, x-rays... All in one place.
You are right, most co-pay for prescription medicine is $5 but there are exceptions. There are also Doctor's offices that do take appointments, you really have to ask around to find them. Great tip about the CDT - all in one place is not common.
My wife just told me that we pay over a thousand dollars for the ambulance ride i have here in Kentucky that is own by the town we live in, and I have insurance. so thats pretty cheap.
Jane.... I hope your experiences here are not as bad as the medical one. Resuming: We have the worst government administration in history. Some of our private services could be as bad. We have a long way to go in terms of administration and effort. Sometimes it is stupid how they could send document by email and we still have to drive across towns..
Next issue I bought triple SS. Then had to buy another plan on top of it just to one item covered. First triple SS said you got full dental coverage but then crowns keep getting deneilied. Then you must buy another plan from someone else. . I was hoping have dental and health all in one plan. A pain it is two bills two cards just to cover major procedure. For the once in a while major dental need. Two different companies is annoying. Said full coverage but o that's not covered. Or would you cancel the delta dental and put the money into a savings account.
Been trying to live on a savings account. Been trying to get disability. Thing is I have no income to show. Don't know what to do about health insurance before savings is completely gone. No clue what to based on income. Like I must live without it.
I live on rhe island. That situation with the ambulance doens't sound right. If there is an emergency, I think they have to get you to the hospital. They cant just leave you there if you dont pay. You should investigate that. Make a complaint. It is illegal to do it in hospitals.
I live in Puerto Rico and I got no job and no income. The health insurance is so hard to pay plus I have a disability. Plus the check up takes three copays unlike the states. My irs paper says no income. The 215 a month with seperate dental is hard to pay. What are my options .and I can't afford house or car coverage too. I did not know moving here I won't be working
Health Insurance and healthcare is cheaper in Puerto Rico! I went to Puerto Rico for vacation I got very sick. End up been a kidney stone and I didn’t use my insurance it was a lot cheaper than the copay with my health insurance from Florida. I paid 150$ for the ER visit and treatment 👌🏽
Thanks! I’m Puertorican but I moved to Florida 34 years ago. I go every year to visit my family and for vacation! I love it there 🇵🇷 Puerto Rico is Beautiful!!! Enjoy 😊
So hard to make appointment. The phone services hard to get through. Most of time goes to answer machine. Then if need to change it. It's hard. The press this number for this press this number and usually get an answering machine.
Exactly! If the Doctor's office will not answer the phone or take an appointment, I find another Doctor. I drive farther for my Doctors, but they are the best!
I can’t stress this enough. If you want to move to Puerto Rico. You have to learn Spanish. A lot of gringos move to puerto Rico thinking they don’t have to assimilate. Because Puerto Rico is a us colony. Spanish is the language of Puerto Rico so learn. Everyone else has to learn English in the USA. So it wont kill you to learn Spanish gringos
Speaking some Spanish is very helpful around the island. This is true for travel anywhere in the world, at least try to speak the local language. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HrqWABlFTTk.html
My Dental visits are included in my Triple S plan (zero additional cost). Good Dentists and dental care, and very inexpensive for anything not covered by insurance.
I am not a medical professional. I would have no idea where to start rating hospitals. The HIMA hospitals in Caguas and Bayamon are widely respected, and that is where I would go if I needed a hospital.
We have too the Prebisterian Hospital in Condado (San Juan) and the Auxilio Mutuo Hosp in Hato Rey (San Juan), this one have their own medical plan). Right now Auxilio medical plan is between $92 - $150 monthly (depends on your age) and if you have a son in college and both are members he pay only $65 until he finish grades. The plan have a limit age to get in as a member (I think is 64 years old).
Unfortunately, there are few jobs, lower paying jobs, and the job market is really tough here. Skilled labor (like electrician, plumbers, heavy equipment operators) can easily get work, especially as self employed. This is why so many people wait until retirement to move here.
Dentist are cheaper compared to USA, for example, a zirconia crown - $700 aprox. including the procedure. Many people travel from USA to PR for dental services. Doctors here have the same federal requirements than the USA.
They have medical health services for veterans. The main veterans hospital/facility is in the San Juan Metro area near a main highway. And there's also Fort Buchanan just outside the metro area.
Liability only car insurance is included in the annual Marbete car registration. I have an additional policy that is $1,000 a year for coverage. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZN10uGNLY14.html
Health insurance sucks on Puerto Rico. The method of going about seeing a Doctor is terrible and tedious. I like the way you say interesting. I find it ridiculous.
