Yep guys, for 3 months I am living in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱 Wondering what’s it like living as a foreigner in the Netherlands? Let’s find out in this video! And out of curiosity: are there any watchers who also moved to the Netherlands? Leave a comment! I would love to hear your thoughts and let's discuss our experiences!
Life in the Netherlands (or should I say 'life in Holland') has been really amazing so far. It's interesting to slowly get used (and adapt) to the Dutch culture and Dutch traditions. 🇳🇱

Thin ones that can also be interesting on a slice of bread, with or without shaved almonds. But there are also very thick ones with whole almonds on them.

Hi Adi and Myra, I love the pictural quality of your videos! You have to be a professional cinematograph ! Nice to see you (Adi) enjoy the Netherlands even if you do sometimes things in a different way ;-) No-I did not say "wrong".. Please could you also show the "other" parts of The Netherlands? The main cities are usual overrepresented in RU-vid videos but there is (even though being a over-populated country) so many beautiful and peaceful spots left! Just go to Nieuwkoop and its wetlands and lake region. You can bike around beautiful places ! And pretty soon the flower-fields near Lisse and Hillegom!

Yep the job situation is a bit of a challenge, but of course this also really depends on what kind of job you are searching for! If I had a car for example it would already be much easier to find a job! But don't let this stop you moving to the Netherlands. It's a beautiful country 😊😊
@okkietrooy6841
@okkietrooy6841 3 года назад
Ofcourse it depends a lot on the kind of work you are looking for. Being a native english speaker can be a big advantage. There are many international companies where most communication is in English. It is an asset if you would also speak Dutch but not always a requirement. Some companies might expect that you learn Dutch in due time. If you can handle another language besides English that could be an asset for example in the international companies but also in tourist Industry, hotels restaurants in Amsterdam and other large towns. You could even consider providing english conversation classes If you are able to explain grammar pitfalls. Another possibility is to start by entering the temporary workforce of an uitzendbureau. They provide companies with temporary personnel like for seasonal work, but it could also be as a temporary replacement for someone on pregnancy leave or for a sudden spoke in production. Normally they are not the nicest jobs and don't provide a lot of job security but it would provide you with some income and you have the chance to check out many different companies, and you will meet many different Dutch people. It are jobs as data-entry, different kinds of factory work, doing the dishes in a restaurant, help in an hospital, cleaning jobs, nurse (then you need a Dutch registration of your own certification), plumber, reception work, waiter, car mechanic, truck driver (If you have the right license), temporary jobs in tourist season, painter, helpdesk, calling center, etc. Etc. And It is not unusual that If you and the employer like each other that you end up with your own contract.

Peanut butter, lovely. Oliebollen, also lovely. The combination is a big no for Dutch people but if you like it, just do it your way. You have to learn Dutch to really integrate and learn to know the country. Try the Appie app in AH. You can use it to scan your shopping. If you fill in the Bonuskaartnummer in the app, if will automatically give you the bonus. Suger usage depends on the individual. I don’t use sugar at all.

Once you have decided to live in another country, especially in a country on the other side of the world, you will go through all the steps of grieving: you say goodbye to family, friends and everything you are emotionally attached to in your original country. And don't underestimate it; this farewell can be compared with saying goodbye to someone who has fallen away from you. In addition, the home country and the conditions in the home country as you left it will not be the home country and the conditions in which you will find the it after years abroad for 2 reasons: 1. Your home country and the people who live there (family and friends) is/are subject to constant changes and evolution's, however small as they can be which you hardly notice when you live there, but all together most likely will provide you a completely different experience of your home country and that this is the reason that after years of absence your home country does no longer feel like your home country and your friends and even family the way you left it/them. 2. Like it or not, you'll still get used (socially, politically, climate-technically and more) to the host country where you stay for a number of years and this habituation changes your perspective with regard to many things to your homeland. Being critical in your home country with regard to matters that you previously never would have discussed in your home country will therefore occur more often than you would like. And you simply cannot have both; you will have to make choices. Structural choices that give you a future in your country of choice. By choosing a certain country, you distance yourself and say goodbye to the other country, including the people who live there, and you welcome the new country, the new language and the new culture and the new norms and values and the people who live there just like yourself. Even if you would fully accept the host country or new country and you would fully integrate into this new country with the new language and the new culture and the new norms and values, you still will go through the complete grieving process of parting with regard to the old country. It is absolutely not possible to keep everything you had in the old country without hindering your integration in the new country. This really is a Black or White situation, you've gotta choose...so it's all about choices unfortunately. You simply can't have both. The grieving process is inevitable, but don't go into the grieving process without giving yourself a real chance of success in the host country or perhaps during permanent immigration; the new country. These are unfortunately the facts as they are. I wish you wisdom at your choices.

Wooo At the 1:14 mins of the video, that's Hawthorn in Melbourne!! The neighborhood where I used to hang when I went to Swinburne Uni. OMG, I miss Hawthorn, haven't been back to Australia for a year now. Also, planing of moving to the Netherlands in Aug with my partner. How is the weather in the Netherlands compare to Melbourne?
@LetsMeetAbroad
@LetsMeetAbroad 3 года назад
haha yes, you got it right. Hawthorn is such a lovely place. Me and Myra used to hangout a lot there in summer. Hmmm the weather, it's kind of similar to Melbourne where it can rain any time but a lot colder than Melbs. Even when its sunny, there are cold winds which can be a bit annoying sometimes. But overall I would prefer Melbourne's weather over The Netherlands. Well... speaking of that, I have yet to experience the Dutch summer, so lets see!

We too are considering relocating to the Netherlands from Los Angeles -but we will see how COVID will impact that in the coming year. As an architect, we will also have see what the professional transition to working there will be like. We have been to the Netherlands many times, and we feel more at home there than the many other places in the world we have traveled and lived. Great work! Keep it up!

Hi Shawn, working as an architect here will be very different from working in the US I suppose. The good thing is that BIM engineers are in great demand here, so if you have experience in 3d moddeling it won’t be too big a challenge to find a job to start with. The building trade is not hard hit by Covid. Working as an architect you will have to be licenced. Contact the Bond van Nederlandse Architecten (BNA). Good luck!

You should do a special about drop: try different kinds, hard, soft, sweet, salty, from different brands. At least include katjes drop (venco), honingdrop (venco) and muntendrop (klene) if you can, find a speciality shop, and ask for original 'trekdrop' Some drop you will most likely not like: dubbelzoute drop, its verrrrrrry salty, and an acquired taste.

I never tried oliebollen....I should remember that next time in the Netherlands -- someday after Covid19....*sigh* Den Haag is beautiful....I have been there only on a daytrip. My husband had given me the "breakfast at the seaside" - treat for one of my birthdays and we went to Scheveningen. We later decided to visit Den Haag - and I really lost my heart there. Such a beautiful place....I remember we saw the parliament and did not know what kind of building it was. So I declared proudly (showing off): "They have a king, must be his castle" :-D....okay....or the Parliament ;-) .

@okkietrooy6841

I have the impression that there are for sure possibilities. Better to figure now If you can transfer your certificate as a licensed nurse to a certificate as a Dutch licensed nurse. You could maybe als the Dutch Embassy. If top want to work in a general hospital not being able to speak Dutch could be an handicap. Most Dutch people do speak English but it does not come naturally to everybody. If you are seriously ill you possibly would not want to use extra energy to communicate in English. The same holds for the family of such a patiënt. Maybe there are possibilities in areas were many non-native speakers live or work. Then it can be an asset if you are a native speaker. Or for example at the first aid station at the airport or in the harbor. If in those situation you work in a team, then the other nurse can help out if you need to communicate in Dutch. Another possibility could be to work as a surgery nurse if you have those qualifications. Dutch maybe sound very difficult at first, but it is relatively easy for english speaking people. The two languages are from the same family and have many worss in common. Also by the time you know the pronounciation rules, it is not that hard to figure out how to pronounce a written Dutch word. What can help If you want to learn Dutch quickly is to listen to childrens TV shows. Start with Sesame street? And read Dutch childrens books. Listen to commercials on television was very helpful to me for learning family live english when I lived in the USA.

Hello, I am a student from India planning to pursue further studies in the Netherlands. How hard is it for an Indian to assimilate into the dutch culture? Is there a huge culture gap? I am scared to be on my own but I am in love with The Netherlands and its culture and I do hope to be studying there by next fall.
@LetsMeetAbroad
@LetsMeetAbroad 3 года назад
Hello Krandoshi, It's a great place to do your studies. There is a big culture gap but in the end it all depends on how open you are to other cultures. If people for other countries show respect to the Dutch culture and are putting effort to be a part of if, then Dutch people are very welcoming. I would highly recommend to learn Dutch or know at least basic before you come here. It will help you a lot.
@bencaspar

My advice: be pro active. Dutch people are kind but it is hard to intergrate into their social lives. If you are looking for new friends go do an activity, like salsa dancing or rock climbing or a cooking class or volunteer work. If you like someone tell them you are new and would like to hang out, because you need new friends. Do not be too subtle, be straight forward about it. It is blunt and very direct.... but that's Holland.

Just search on google for supermarkt and the name of your town/village and you will find all the supermarkets in your neighbourhood. An easy way would be to ask someone in your neighbourhood. You can be unlucky and meet a cranky person but most Dutch people are friendly (unless they are running late for work or to pick up their kids) and speak enough english to help you out or will find someone who can help you. When you are in a grocery store you can always ask an employee for help or just another shopper. Asking them: Can you help me is enough. And If you need an item that is not in the store just als someone where you have to go to buy it.
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 2 года назад
Ok. You are probably here now and didn't have to quarantine. What bothers me is The Netherlands still requires full vaccination. There's many options for getting groceries delivered at extra cost of course. I did not wear a facediaper on the street or in a grocery store once. The Dutch are pretty good at breaking/bending the rules. So I hope you made it and have fun.
