I love these 'cost of travel' videos. I really think you should edit together a 'Cost of Brian's monthly haircut' video from all the different places around the world!! It would be fun to see if it is a swanky salon or a chair in the street!

I spent five years living in SE Asia. Vietnam is incredible and still my favorite place. I am always telling people that, if you eat Vietnamese food, then it is cheaper to eat out for every meal than to buy groceries and eat at home. After a year living in Africa, I can't wait to get back to SE Asia.

Thank you for the video. I totally agree with what you said about the cost in Vietnam. We had a similar experience with our Vietnam trip (Saigon, Mekong Delta, Hue, Danang, Hoian, Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong with a 2-day cruise) which did not ruin us at all. We stayed in great hotels (4 or 5 star hotels), had awesome food (traditional and street food), traveled by plane between cities, or by van with drivers for short distances and visited many beautiful places. I know that a similar trip with the same conditions in Europe or America would cost at least three times that price.
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie Год назад
At least three times as much!! We really believe that we didn't need to cut back on eating out or going on excursions in Vietnam. Everything that we did seem like a good deal and well worth it. We look forward to going back soon. Thank you for watching!! Cheers!!🍻

We definitely miss our days of living in Vietnam! We had a two bedroom, two bathroom (with showers) apartment in a super nice complex, which had its own grocery store , restaurants, movie theater, bowling alley, etc...and our apartment was $530. Our daily costs were also next to nothing. Not so much like that living back in Europe. 😬

Hi, great breakdown. We have decided to go four star hotels all the way for our upcoming 3 week trip to Vietnam, because they are ssssoooooo affordable compared with literally any other destination, and we will be moving about every three days. We never spoil ourselves like this, when we travel, because that would obliterate our budget usually. We have a couple of overnight trains, and three internal flights booked (because Con Dao Island in the South, is also on our agenda). We will be treating ourselves to a Halong Bay cruise which is the biggest ticket item we have booked whilst there. The only other countries, we have been that is comparable in costs to Vietnam, is Java in Indonesia, Sri Lanka (although that might have changed now) and Southern India.

Another great video! I think we're gonna go for a quick trip to Vietnam on this summer's Thailand trip- we're thnking if we can only go one place-- maybe DaNang-- and add in Hoi An? What do you think? We both don't love crowds so much. How did you get from Hanoi to DaNang.
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie Год назад
Hi Dan! Out of the areas in Vietnam we visited, we'd highly recommend Hoi An and Da Nang (great, less chaotic locations). When we traveled to Da Nang from Hanoi we flew. Prices for flights are very affordable and similar to trains. The difference is a flight takes a few hours and a train takes 16 or more 😳😳...way to long on a train for us, especially for the same price. Thanks for watching!!

We went to Vietnam end of March for 2 weeks. Spent 4 days in Saigon, 5 days in Nha Trang, 1 day in Ha Long Bay, and 4 days in Hanoi, quite an adventure. Took a train from Saigon to Nha Trang, flew from Nha Trang to Hanoi, bus to Ha Long Bay and back to Hanoi. It was a blast. Unfortunately, my wife fell and broke her wrist on the 3rd day in Saigon while on a food tour. Total hospital costs with doctor, 2 x-rays, cast, and medication, $101 US dollars. She was determined to finish the trip, though it did limit several things we had plan on doing. Definitely going to go back for a month and hit Hoi An and Da Nang.

Thank you for sharing this video, I do enjoy the break-down of your costs while traveling. One question for you both, how do you manage your phone plan? Do you have a US phone plan that you use as your base plan and also while visiting family in the US and then purchase SIM cards for each country that you visit, as you did in Vietnam? Obviously the phone number changes as you replace the SIM card, is this a problem as you move between countries trying to communicate with family and friends? I am currently using Google FI and after being out of the US for almost 3 months currently, Google is going to suspend my international data soon which is a huge problem, so I think it is time to search out other options. Thanks, Jamie
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 11 месяцев назад
Hi Jamie! So sorry for the late reply, we were off the grid for the last week on a family cruise ☺. For our phones, we have Google Voice. This gives you a local number from the States and stays with you no matter what SIM Card you use. While home I just order a SIM card from Amazon or get one at Best Buy. This last time home we used Ultra SIM and it worked great and was on $19 for a month. Hope that helps! Cheers 🍻

Hello Brian and Carrie. We will be flying with AirAsia in January from Chiang Mia to Hanoi. Were you able to fly with your carry-on? Did you have to pay a fee? We have booked our flight with the checked bag add-on. Any advise would greatly be appreciated.

We did not have to pay a fee. We weren't even asked to weigh our luggage. Our advice is to not say anything until they ask. We have only had to check our carry-on once in two years and, of course, that was flying from Da Nang to Bangkok on AirAsia. 😃

@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 11 месяцев назад
We could have chosen to keep our cell service in the states but the cost was way higher than we wanted to spend. Doing it the way we do it, we typically only pay on average about $10 per month per phone. I (Carrie) actually just added safety wing onto my coverage. It's a great option if you are younger (the cost is much less) or if you already have coverage in the States and only need "travel insurance". Thanks for watching! Cheers 🍻

Is Vietnam 30-days tourist visa on arrival or by application? Surely there is a visa cost? I did the Intrepid Travel Bike Vietnam (Hanoi to Saigon) tour in 2012, quite physical biking over those mountain passes but the scenery was spectacular and we got much closer to the people and rural life being on the bike and off the beaten track.

These is a marvelous scenery place: Pac Bo Cave in Nth. VN cls to China border that few western revelers know. Owing to the political & historical significance of the place where VN Chairman Ho Chi Minh secretely dwelved & directed the revolution against the Colonial French in the late 1940s & early 50s, this place is & shall be maintained as a historical heritage site, so the nature is not disturbed by touristry development yet & perhaps long into the future. Push politics aside, this place would be worthwhile for its nature reserve & beauty. Political/Historical Edge: If someone who is interest in historical narative of Patti Archimedes a fmr major of OSS (Office Strategic Services that later evolved into the CIA) in his memoir Why Vietnam Mjr. Achimedes might be the 1st American who offically met Chrmn HCM & the meeting place probably was somewhere in the vincinity of the Pac Bo Cave.

If not, how do you ensure protection of US assets, in case you may need hospitalization while in the US? We all know the US has the highest medical expense in the world. I see highest risk of bankruptcy due to healthcare expense would be higher in the US. For expenses in Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, etc, the cost would be more affordable for out of pocket expenses. Curious how you are managing the US risk…. Thank you.
