Andrea Contreras, 31, lives in Austin, Texas and earns $145,000 a year as a social media advisor at GoDaddy. Five years ago she had a negative bank balance, but Andrea recently purchased her first home.
This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.

Looking around her one-bedroom apartment, Andrea Contreras gazes from the guitar collection on the wall to the Gucci-inspired sweatshirt her Yorkie mix, Kuzco, wears. She can’t believe it’s all hers.
“Five years ago, I had nothing,” the 31-year-old remembers. Years of partying in her early 20s landed Contreras in a dark place: She had no money, no support system and no goals for her future.
But today, things look vastly different. Contreras has family and friends to turn to in hard times and a career she enjoys. Plus, her apartment is full of furniture and keepsakes that she bought herself. “It’s such a blessing to see everything in here, when I had literally nothing,” she says.
As a social media advisor at GoDaddy, Contreras sells social media assistance programs to small business clients across the U.S. She earns a base salary of just $20,000, but with commissions from her sales, she pulled in around $145,000 before taxes last year. She not only lives well in Austin, Texas, and supports herself financially, but she’s comfortable with the direction her life is going.
“If I want to go on vacation, I can take a vacation. If I want to help someone out, I can help someone out,” she says.

@@mav7804 she's making at least $14k a month in commissions. She doesn't need someone to come into office and forgive her $30k in student debt. She's putting almost $3k a month in savings. If she moved 10-20% of that savings towards her student loans she'd pay them off quickly. Its great to save but if you have debts you should pay them off.

Exactly! I have only $16k that I'm paying off in student debt, but I used the GI Bill to pay for about 60% of my tuition, and I worked f/t and paid another 10% as I went. I sucked it up and went to a public university, but avoided those crazy $100k+ student loan nightmares that others now want us taxpayers to take care of for them.

Sales is the best option if it's YOUR natural inclination to do that as a job. Never force yourself to do a job that you'd hate for years on end even if it paid well. There's other options for non stem jobs that still pay 6+ figures like digital marketing.

I have a ton of student loans that I will be paying well into my 40s and I agree with you at heart but I disagree with you on logic. While I want to feel that freedom and I have an urge and an instinct to pay them off and nothing in the world will feel as good as being rid of them it is much smarter if you have low APR loans (mine are all below 3.8%) to pay the minimum and invest your extra money. $1K invested will grow faster and net you more than the $38 you'll save that year on it by paying down earlier. This doesn't apply to everyone but it does to most borrowers. It's just a long-term math problem and the math comes out on the side of investing. Always.

@@martinzaharinov4016 There is an emotional component to debt and I would never tell someone to not pay it down over investing. Just like you said, it is financially better to invest if the interest rate is low. I would rather invest and once I have enough, the interest on the investment can pay the student loan bill. The other benefit of investing is that you still have the cash in case of emergencies.

It's better to take care of your debt now while you're making great money. Especially if you ended up getting laid off, getting in a accident and can't work and now you are no longer making great money and still have loads of debt.

@@xPyrotecLP If her students are federally awarded, then they should carry a low interest and the interest is simple interest. That means that paying off 30k earlier will cost her money versus investing it. Plus with the Federal reserve pumping money, her debt gets cheaper and cheaper every year as more and more money gets pumped into the system.

Warren Buffer always says "be greedy when others are fearful and be fearful when others are greedy". This is certainly the trick to succeeding even when others fail. 10 O'Swords eh I think it depends on a person’s eating habits... Some people would not want to eat multiple burgers in one week (or even deal with freezing it and thawing it), so it would be easier to go to Wendy’s or McDonald’s and buy a burger + fries + drink for around $5. I live 2 minutes from a mcdonalds & not too far from a Wendy’s, so it might be more convenient for some people to drive to a fast food restaurant. For some people buying bread + ground beef + cheese + a head of lettuce + pickles + condiments & then preparing it is a lot lol

There are many restaurants that have apps that you rank up points for exchange for free food or money off. My credit card off deals from restaurants such ad buy and get another one free of equal or less value. Two people can eat for 10.00 or less. If she uses these type of deals she has a meal for the next day.

The cost of attending a public university has increased by over 260% since 1980 (private schools are even worse). While wages have technically increased in the last 4 decades, real purchasing power has not budged. So, while your paycheck "looks" bigger, due to inflation you are not actually making more (Pew Research). Meaning, everything costs more, college included. Which is why people are looking for student debt forgiveness. Not to mention all other developed countries have heavily subsidized college education. The US is the only one that doesn't consider education a right.

A good practice is to try and skip every other paycheck ... If you can't make it on half of what you earn, you need to find a new career... or reduce expenses. Cable TV ? who needs it ? cancelled. XM radio ? cancelled. Sweaters for dogs ? Get a goodwill sweater, cut and reshape it for your dog.

That’s how Housing prices are in the south especially Texas . I live in Houston, Texas and my house is over 4000 sq ft 5 bedroom and 3.5 bath and I only got it fir 325K. There are homes like the one in the video that go for 180K-250K here in Houston or Texas in general.

Her mentality of splurging and not paying off her loans but hoping for a government forgiveness program is showing how spoiled and entitled she is. She'll wind up broke again. Typical sales rep. Spend all of hte money when its coming in and then wait for a handout when its gone. The school loan enabled her lifestyle. So we all have to pay for it?

@@NM-gr7cs Maybe, but it's no worse than someone planning taxes around potential tax changes that will save them money.... it's just another wealth planning strategy. Don't fault her for being savvy. People take advantage of strategies all the time... like filing bankruptcy for protection. Whatever side of the political aisle you are on, these exist.

That's why all the people saying don't pay off the student loans and invest the money are wrong. Pay off the loans as fast as you can. Now if the job goes away you're much better off pausing investing than pausing loan payoffs.

GoDaddy did leave Austin and she and everyone else was without a job. I worked with her at GoDaddy. She wasn't this "humble"

@@saulbravo3485 no if you look closely, she's on the phone all day closing deals and she mentioned getting big commissions from it. Sales and marketing are similar but opposite. Marketing is the art of attracting. Sales is reinforcing the deal to be closed from what attracted someone to the product or service.

Her sums don't add up at all. Her salary isn't correct, it's way outta line for the market. She's on 40-50k and just inflated it for the vid. Source: someone who works in a similar field for a similar company.

Exactly what I thought. People I know that come to Austin, TX from other cities complain that Austin, TX does not pay as much as other bigger cities pay. So, with that salary she’d have to be in top management at Go Daddy, for sure. Also, just by looking online you can see that yes, there are a lot of job openings in Austin, but they only want to pay US$ 10 - US$ 17 max for regular jobs.

Paying off that student debt and she will be a lot happier. Congrats to her on turning her life around. At 31 with $145k income, drug/alcohol free, and loving family/friends for support.
