Christine Hopkins, 27, lives in Berkeley, CA, and earns $88,000 a year as a marketing manager at Bluewolf, an IBM company. She wasn't always responsible with money, making charges to her credit card without being able to pay them off. In 2018 she began making an effort to change her financial habits. Here's how Christine makes, earns, and spends her money.
Read more about Rachel and Scott’s budget breakdown: cnb.cx/2K87pKP
This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.
After making changes to her financial lifestyle, Hopkins now puts away around $2,000 a month into savings, pays down her debt, and still enjoys life in the Bay area. Although a significant portion of her earnings goes toward rent and debt repayment, Hopkins says she never feels like she’s struggling to get by. “I’m able to live pretty comfortably on my salary in Berkeley,” she says.
Hopkins began working in the Bay Area as a marketing intern after graduating from college, earning $15 an hour. After her internship ended the company offered her a full-time position for $50,000 a year.
When she realized that her debt was not decreasing despite her increase in salary she started working with an advisor at the Financial Gym. Hopkins began treating her savings and debt like bills, putting a certain amount toward each every month. “I have discovered that I actually have a lot more money than I thought to do things like this,” she says.

She has a shockingly small amount of savings for moving internationally. 1. She should be paying minimums on her other debts and attacking the credit cards aggressively while she postpones her savings. Then the next highest interest debt. 2. I have 3 pets and only spend $100/month so her expenses should be way lower especially taking away the barkbox crap. 3. She could drop her cell phone bill by at least half by going prepaid. 4. They should probably be looking in to getting a cheap commuter if her transportations cost are that high unless she has to pay for parking at her work then maybe it's okay. If she put all her savings towards debt she could probably pay it off in a year. She would be able to save 3k after shes done with debt so she can have a good amount after another year of savings. You're welcome, that will be $85/month please.

literally, they are not buying houses because millennials are trying to teach themselves financial freedom at age 26 after graduating with $30,000 in debt and not being taught how to manage money from age 16 all the way through college by our parents as probably should have happened. thank you @grahamstephan for your youtube channel.

The car sharing thing is nowhere near as economical as owning an inexpensive reliable car. Anyone who uses those services is just trying to be trendy. $85 pays for my gas, insurance, and maintenance on my Hobda Civic for a month, but that's the weekend day rate to rent?

The monthly breakdown makes no sense if she is making $88K a year in California. After standard state and federal taxes, her month salary should be on the lower end of $5k. How can she afford to spend almost $6K?
@javajava8856
@javajava8856 4 года назад
You can get RT flights from LAX to London for under $400. Add another $50 to 100 on airlines like Ryanair to get to Munich or Berlin. So, $500 max for airfare. Not sure where she's getting $2000 from.

$2,000 for a flight to Germany? Really? Even $1,000 is too high, you can often find deals and last-minute offers. I've been using SkyScanner for years (not a promo, just my experience), and I've never paid more than $800 for a ticket (and that was actually too high).

You know what Dave Ramsey is going to say? When you still owe a lot of debt, no job lined up, the only reason you move is because of your partner, going to a foreign country where you will be far away from your support system, sounds like a gamble to me. This is not about being young or being open minded. This is about knowing the risk and still decide the take it because of so called love. If she decided to move to Germany for herself nobody can say anything about it but she didn't.

If I was asking someone to move with me, where they may not have a visa to work, I’d ask them to stay a year to get that debt lower. On 88k you should be able to pay them off. Lower your savings for a couple of months. Because I don’t want to have to support both of us and deal with your debt, especially if you aren’t allowed to work. I also really don’t get how a phone bill could be so high even if it is split?!

I've been debt free since I was in my late 20's, well, other than my mortgage since I didn't have hundreds of thousands to plop down. Before my mortgage, I was saving so much money per month without any debt. Paying off your credit cards every month is key. I still am saving money each month but I use some of that to pay off my mortgage faster.

Calculations seem off.. if you gross $88k you can't spend $71k net.. taxes are at least 25% including payroll taxes unless the savings were pretax i.e. 401k
