“To desire nothing beyond what you have is surely happiness. Aboard a boat, it is frequently possible to achieve just that. That is why sailing is a way of life, one of the finest of lives” - Carleton Mitchell
Colleen has said it all!!!!! All that work on the Airstream in the snow and cold, and look at you now, what a life change, i could not be happier for you both................and a wee bit envious 🙂
Awe, thank you Jon!! ❤ We've had a few moments out here reflecting back on all of that! Boat life certainly serves up some big challenges but days like these certainly make it all worth it!
Always do two clamps, invert one so they’re clamping into each other. Hot tip, put extra hose clamps on every hose, so if you ever have to cut one back, you can just sever the hose, remove the stub, and jam it back on, then tighten the next two clamps. We had a yacht full of drunken Canadians come home to a sunken boat at our Village docks, as they had a leaking sea-cock, and as they got more inebriated, forgot their bilge pump was manual and went to the pub. I took a photo of the mast sticking out of the water, but when my buddy Pete salvaged their boat, it was just a cracked hose. If they had spare hose clamps on it, they could have just fixed it underway. Another thing is to make sure you replace check valves on a schedule, because they’re never right where you lay eyes on them every day.
We've been continuously blown away by the generosity and kindness of others in the cruising community! A sailor would give you the shirt of their back! I guess boating is the sort of activity where everyone has needed a helping hand at some point, so it's nice to return the favor when you can!
FUN!! What an adventure! The meal looks gourmet and it was so nice to get "grocery delivery" from a good sea-neighbour!! I really enjoy watching the transition from motor to sails, seeing how attentiveely you both read the weather and wind and adjust! It's fun to see you working together so well, troubleshooting engine leaks, swimming, making music, relaxing!! Such an enjoyable series of videos!
Thank you so much Colleen!! Vey grateful for the good-deed grocery delivery! We just bought ourselves a prawn/crab trap and a fishing rod so we're looking forward to paying-it-forward :) So glad you enjoyed that part. Sailing is a lot of that! We still have a heck of a lot to learn about weather, wind and trimming our sails but we're so enjoying the learning journey!
Love watching your adventure. There is something about getting away and into remote areas and just living with what you have taken with you. I think the beauty of it is you can leave all that "stuff" you think needs to be sorted out behind and then when you get home that "stuff" may no longer be an issue. See you next week, love you guys.
Its a real nice to be able to leave all that 'stuff' behind and kick back in nature. Unfortunately so far, all of our stuff has been waiting for us every time, luckily it's all pretty well behaved and not much cause for concern or stress :) Thanks for watching our adventure! Stoked to catch up with you guys soon!
That meal ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ We also found that most cruisers sharing anchorages were very caring and generous. We also shared our sea catches when we arrived. Again the scenery is amazing and your land and sea film editing is superb. However you wouldn’t catch me jumping in the water. Dennis is excited now and can’t wait for drone shots of me swimming. It isn’t going to happen.
Hahah! you might jump in here!!Interestingly, water in Desolation Sound is the warmest North of Mexico! Can get up to 24 degrees in places in the Summer due to a fortunate quirk of geography - located halfway between the northern and southern points of Vancouver Island, Desolation Sound lies at the convergence of the tidal flow from both directions. So there is much less tidal movement or major currents in the Sound, and allows the relatively stationary ocean water to be warmed by the hot sun throughout the summer, leading to much higher seasonal temperatures - fun fact :)
That’s a great plan, we’ll see if there is enough room on the water pump inlet. We have double clamps on a bunch of other connections, exhaust, seacocks ect.. Captain Q knows his stuff!!
Thanks for the tip Eric! We've been playing around with car positions a lot more. Recently I've been thinking about rigging up twinning lines so we can adjust the sheeting angle without moving the car. Agreed though, the foot of the sail was way too tight for the sail conditions and the top of the sail was spilling a bunch of wind.
Good question! Airstream basecamp is still sitting pretty in the woods, she's well looked after. We've been back and forth a few times. It's lovely to have a steady stable, land reprieve :) Hope you had (are still having?) and amazing camping trip! 🌲
