Living Paycheck to paycheck, how many are going hungry? I went shopping to see how- I failed

Food insecurity is rising. Inflation is only growing. Fixed incomes are fixed while prices soar. Many with no access to food banks, SNAP and discount stores. I went shopping to see if I could take care of a family of 3 on my income (by adding bills most might have) - paycheck to paycheck.. God bless us all

I buy flour and baking powder and baking soda. You can make homemade biscuits, pancakes, waffles, Indian Fry Bread. No pancake syrup boil water add sugar until sweet. Pour over pancakes while warm.

Living 23 miles from one Walmart 45 miles to another (in a opposite direction) who has a Aldi at the next stop light, and dollar tree at both, I tend to go to the further one to maximize my use of fuel. Twice a month here we have a small all-welcome food bank, you usually find day old bread you'll have to freeze until you need it, it's fast to go bad, and occasionally they'll have milk. We have memberships to Sam's and Costco but are about to drop one. We use gas buddy app to find cheapest fuel, ours went up 10% since Friday. Always fill up when you think it's cheap. As for your detergent, Purex is far cheaper and doesn't stink to high heaven. At Kroger you had a good opportunity to get $4.99 @pound meat buy one get one, reducing the price to 2.50 a pound at most, Aldi should have been your first stop, milk prices are regional, but our Aldi is pretty close to Walmart whose the cheapest. I go through tons of chocolate milk, I can handle it without lactaid, white milk needs it, I lived in a area there were two main sources for dairy, one I could do without medicine, the other I couldn't handle at all either way. Don't get me wrong, you did good, bit some of that's quite regional. I use the Walmart app at other stores before I put stuff in my cart too.

That was good advice- better with Purex. I could have bought more items at DG to include my cereal and/or grits. I actually use Purex in my home. And you’re right prices are regional. Another thing is if I saved that budget up to $100 I might do better shopping monthly buying more meals. That’s it- I think I would have to go for cheaper household items and shop monthly- tyfs 😃

All summer I go to farmers markets close to closing time and make offers on remaining fruit/veggies/meat/eggs. Usually I get a nice discount because the farmers don't want to take it home. Then I take it home and either freeze it pressure can it. I also shop sales and preserve as much as I can of that too. I conserve electric, water, etc. Don't buy on credit. Pick up side hustles for extra money. Sew. Hang dry laundry. Crochet. Read. Watch RU-vid instead of TV.

Your best bet is to take stock of what you already have on hand. Meal plan around those items & anything that’s on sale at your local grocery store. & just get the basics to fill up the holes you need to plug in for your meal plan. I LOOSELY meal plan. Basically have a meal list, a snack list, & a sides list ~ using what I already have on hand. Have eggs & bread? Make eggs in a basket for a few meals. Egg sandwiches. If you get a pack of ground beef, use 1/2 for chili & put the rest in the freezer for a later date. Make a BIG pot of chili. Mostly using beans. THE first night, chili, the 2nd night, chili dogs or chili burritos, the next night frito chili pie. Or just make 2 different meals with it & put the rest in the freezer for another meal later down the road. I don’t do batch cooking but I DO make big batches of what I’m cooking & put 1/2 of what’s left in the freezer (in meal size increments) for a day when I don’t have the energy to cook or need a quick meal to defrost & go for our family. If you can find a cheaper grocery store than Walmart (I live in Oklahoma & Crest & Winco are awesome… I hate Aldi & rarely shop there or walmart when I can avoid them). That’s how we make our small grocery budget work. Stock up on items that are on sale that will last a bit in my pantry or freezers, & skip a week or more (like every other week or every couple of weeks). I have a general list of items we can easily make with what we already have on hand (or normally have on hand) & list as many items as I can think of that we can make or have on hand & usually can come up with at least 15-20 meals easily. & these are simple meals. Breakfast for dinner at least once a week (pancakes & eggs; egg sausage & cheese casserole or burritos, cereal, etc), Use bagged beans whenever & where ever possible. Yes they take more work but are SOOOO much more economical than the canned version. Any produce that you don’t think you will be able to get thru, freeze it for another day/meal. Think of your food as ingredients. I know that sounds dumb, but just hear me out. More often than not, we can get into a cooking rut & only think of the things we normally eat & can’t seem to think outside the box, so to speak. If you have an ingredient that you cannot come up with something to go with it (like oyster sauce - which btw is AMAZING on stir fry ~ then look it up online. WHAT CAN I MAKE WITH xyz? Or what is a cheap meal I can make with xyz? Promise you will get a lot of different answers. The more you can think outside the box,the better & definitely will stretch your dollars much farther!!!

Don’t be afraid to go to the food pantries if need be. It’s truly nothing to be ashamed of & people will not look down on you for going there if you need to, regardless of why.

I get food stamps. I get $188 in food stamps what I do is get almost everything at once. I save $20 for like milk and fresh stuff that doesn't last a whole month. I get a ton of zip lock bags and split everything up like I buy a large 2.5 pounds of ground beef break it up and an make patties. Make zip lock bags of chicken per a meal, then i know what i have. For pasta I buy the little bags of pasta from the Mexican food aisles they are like 55 cents each. I also check out pharmacy adds they often have sales on foods. Last month I got 4 1 pound ground beef rolls for $1.99 each and a 5 lbs bag of sugar for $2. They also had buy one get one free frozen pizzas. They where $5.50. I always go first to the clearance area to check out to see if they have anything I need or can use. Like yesterday I got 25 mini Gatorade drinks for 44 cents each.

The pasta is one thing I've been shocked by. Kroger used to have it on the mega event for .49-.79 each at least once a month. And, that wasn't that long ago. If you're near cvs, people are scoring snacks (tortilla chips included) 75-90% off.

Very good point- I like CVS and Walgreens for snacks but wasn’t sure if they’re everywhere. But now that I think about it- I’ve never gone anywhere there hasn’t been a CVS! And it’s such an overlooked store for sales- thank you : )

@@poorandposh8231 lol... Yeah, cvs is like the brick and mortar amazon... Taking over the world. I never used to think a drugstore would beat walmart prices on stuff, but I get more through couponing at the drugstores than I get at Walmart.

Kroger has creamette pasta products for .79 when when you buy a multiple of six participating items on that deal so you don't just have to buy pasta that deal is through Tuesday I don't know if it will continue next week or not

We use whatever laundry detergent's the cheapest or on sale. I grabbed a few of the Tide Simply when it was 4/$9 at Walgreens and we've been using that, but there are cheaper, too. I've stocked up on hand soap and dish soap. We don't use a lot of toilet paper and I stock up when it's on sale at Walgreens for $3.75 or less (same with paper towels). Cleaning stuff, we use mostly vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and other natural things. For food, we're fortunate to be on Food Stamps. We wouldn't make it if we weren't on Food Stamps for the four of us. I'm always looking up ways to spend less per week on food and recipes to make the food stretch for as long as possible. I want my sons to be able to survive if things ever get really bad for them. Thanks so much for the video!

That cleaning supplies tip is HUGE!!! I think we often fall into the media mind of smells and words on packaging like “kills 99% bacteria “ When I think back to when I was a kid our house smelled like bleach. That meant clean- and still does. And I haven’t heard the term”stretching out food “ since my grandparents. That was a thing! And I’d somewhat forgotten it. There was a handful of rice in every soup, we had potatoes in almost everything, cut meat into small pieces so everyone got some and it seemed like a lot, even lentils were fillers. And you know what- I tried that Ajax laundry detergent we could always get from Walgreens for just .99. It wasn’t bad. It got our clothes clean. I’ve got to get back to that mentality. Thank you SO much for sharing. I hope you have a great week 😀

I'm a person that has stocked up on nothing but marked down meat at Kroger for many years paying a fraction of the cost. I also shop the markdown sections and get food and non-food items very cheaply. I'm always looking for bargains no matter where I shop and they're still out there. I've been living on Social Security only since retiring from my job in May of 2020 I have no problem stretching my budget but I also have a paid for mortgage so I'm not paying rent my real estate taxes are affordable I have one charge card but I never carry a balance on it with careful budgeting I can dine out two to three times a week

We are going to gave no income for about 2 months. If I didn't already coupon & stock up we would be in trouble. I stocked up last month at the discount grocery store in the mountains. They have several in Asheville NC ( like the ones you went to.) Wish they were closer. Need to catch up on your videos! Tfs! Blessings!

I love how you think! I do what I can when I can and it really helps. I think it’s worth a drive to stock up - not just shop. Which is why save as much as I can then go to discount store with someone. $50 goes a long way in a discount store. And I like United Grocery has an ad so I can plan. So now when I really don’t have extra to spend on groceries I already have what I need to get by. Freezers and pantry are okay- it’s fresh produce that’s hard to get. Sounds like you got it figured out - you’re going to be okay. I am sorry about the no income thing for a while. You’re in my prayers if that’s okay with you

Don’t forget about buy nothing groups in your town/state area. I have seen many times something that someone else isn’t going to be able to eat before the exp. Date but they want to make sure it doesn’t go to waste. Make sure to check that out & your local food banks. That’s what they’re there for … when you need help. The food pantry I work at you can go every other week. Some food pantries let you go every day or only once a month, depending on the pantry. PLEASE look them up for your area. Check it out.
