I hate to always brag, but boy did we get lucky! One year in Lisbon, Avenidas Novas, and it was a great little neighborhood and apartment building...Pretty quiet and no bad neighbors or construction and we had it all in walking distance! Pretty central, but not touristy or super busy. As to your final point, we hit the jackpot...House 30km or so from Lisbon and beaches, quiet as can be, city 2 minutes away with EVERYTHING including a bus depot with buses to Lisbon, beautiful view, etc...Just incredible! We ruled out early on across the river where a lot of people go, Lisbon center due to prices and size and like I said hit the jackpot! I hear only birds right now...

Great point. Only it’s not just Lisbon. It seems to be all over this developing country. Housing is badly needed for all. Last year, I moved to a smallish town in the Algarve. Found a nice 2 bedroom rental (to qualify for my visa) with front and back terraces overlooking the streets that frame my building. The first 6 months was heaven. Zen. Then, I found out ONE day before, the charming casita next door (that only needed a little rehab love), was to be torn down and a 5 story apartment building to be built. DIRECTLY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF MY WALL!! It’s been awful. In the states, they build with wood. Here they build with cement & brick - which is FAR noisier. It carries sound and vibrates like an earthquake. Bang bang tap tap all day most days from 8am-6pm. Dust, sand, cement, rendering, all flying onto my lovely terrace & railing. I clean it up and the next day it’s all back. To add insult to injury, 3 months later they tore down the 2 casitas (also in good shape) on the other side of my bedrooms’ terrace. Because it’s across a narrow street and not on the other side of my wall, it’s a little more bearable. But like the beginning of your video, when they have to drill through the concrete to route electricity and plumbing, it’s deafening. I can’t hear myself sometimes! Not an exaggeration. And twice I thought I’d lose my mind. I was sick for 2 weeks at one point and couldn’t sleep (to recover from the illness) during work hours. When my Lisbon-resident landlord tried to raise my rent and not reduce it as I had asked, I fought it. I didn’t get a reduction but maintained status quo. She has no idea how insane this situation is. The locals are selling their resort casitas to developers and getting a handsome sum. I don’t blame them. It’s building generational wealth. But it’s so sad to see the charming homes give way to zero charm modern buildings that all look the same. (Often the same developer.) The plus side of all this noise and lack of zen is that I’ve learned about how these buildings are constructed and what to avoid when looking for my home purchase. It’s a pain in my a__ but I”m grateful to know all of this before I buy.

🧐Travel Tidbits huh? Cool. I was there all of June and I was definitely heard a lot of construction noise. There was a building near my ABNB that was under renovation and on my walk, there was another building getting renovated. I take that as good news. More available housing coming soon. Good update.

I just went through a weekend of the "local festa" in my community. Despite taking place over a kilometer from my house, I was disturbed by very loud music until 5am on Friday and Saturday nights. This was not Lisbon, it is in rural Leiria. Luckily it is only once a year. Noise carries here and most Portuguese people have no real conception of the fact that noise disturbs other people. Don't even get me started on the noise in Coimbra. The students regularly make all kinds of noise late and night. Drunken singing galore at 2am there.
