2G phones won't even make phone calls or even text, since AT&T shut down all 2g services on January 1, 2017. Keep that in mind when watching this video in 2018.
Holoskian 5G will come out in 2020, then 6G around 2025, by 2030 it should be 7G. I’m not sure the 4G network is still around by then. There will be so many apps that iPhone X can’t run because iPhone X has obsolete iOS. If Apple keep their pace of upgrade, then we should see iOS 28 in 2034. Most app may require like iOS 25 to run and iPhone X maybe only be able to upgrade to iOS 17 or iOS 18, iOS 19 if it is lucky.
Kevin Mahoney Actually it still doesn't work fully. But anyone using an old iPhone would want to get the most out of it. No one says, "Oh, I like using broken and out of date software."
Kinda funny how fast technology has evolved since this was posted and how long our current devices last. My daily driver is a Galaxy S7 that is older now than the 1st gen iPhone was when this video was made. Except for not having usb-c, I don't feel like it needs updating any time soon.
I still remember installing whitedoor on my iPod 2g back in the day. I miss the old tech days. Still cant believe I managed to keep myself so in the loop back then. My family always made it so difficult for me to enjoy my passion for technology.
In 2022: ❌Voice Calls ❌Text Messages ❌Email ❌Video Chat ❌Apps & Games ✅Music ✅Movies ❌Connectivity ❌Camera Most carriers have already phased out 2G, some even phasing out 3G since 2020. Most older versions of Apps are also no longer supported. The Camera on the iPhone 2G is not acceptable in 2022.
ShadowReaper (How I feel about iPhone, MY OPINIONS) Before the iPhone 5, the iPhone was probably the best smartphone you could get. It was cool, unique, and powerful. Once the iPhone 5 came out, it seemed like Apple was playing catch-up (excluding the release of iOS 7; that was great). By the time iPhone 5S came out, it was clear Apple was behind. With the release of iPhone 6, it was on par with Android: running out of ideas. Then we come to current day. I feel that what made iPhone great, it's uniqueness, it's spirit, has completely drifted away. Also phone manufacturers are running out of ideas. tl;dr The iPhone 4S was the last great iPhone, and smartphone manufacturers are running out of ideas.
Believe it or not, iOS 6 actually had that built-in RU-vid app, it was simply removed either in Beta 4 or (if it existed) 5. This is because the huge legal fight with Apple and Google occurred while iOS 6 was in beta.
GeckoMkII Built-in RU-vid app was removed in iOS 6 Beta 4, to get RU-vid on iOS 6 Beta 4 and above, must get RU-vid app from the App Store or use the website.
The good old days. I miss coming home from school and talking to my internet friends I made in 2012. Ahh, nothing but careless fun and enjoying vocaloid together. I talked to them for hours on end and they made me feel happy. I turn 18 this year and I've lost contact with all of those friends. They've either abandoned ship or passed away. If I could go back in time to any date, it'd be that.
It would be interesting to see a 2019-2020 version of this video. In my opinion, this phone is still being a valid option if you want a pretty basic experience and dont bother to not have any access to recent apps, you know, texting and calling people and taking photos sometimes
I'd say the camera failed simply because it was crap back in 2007 when it first came out. So if it was bad by the standards of the time, its completely unacceptable today.
TheOrangeType Nokia N95 from early 2007 had a 5 Mpix 1/2.5" sensor and it recorded VGA 30 fps video, something iPhone couldn't do until 2009 iPhone 3GS. Its main competitor was Sony Ericsson K850. But the iPhone's UI was awesome and apparently most people cared more about the UI than the camera, microSD cards or bluetooth file transfer. Those who could affort it anyway ...
@asiandoestech that's because you are a Nokia fanboy and I'm an Okia fangirl. The truth is that the camera should have gotten a pass not a question mark because the camera works. That's all it matters not how good the camera is. Besides, Commodore has nothing to do with what we like to do.
I think that the assumption is that you use your phone as a portable computer, which a huge number of people do. I would agree that the effects of the mobile market on the rest of the computer market have been negative in a lot of ways (shallow mobile games, playing a large part in ending Moore's Law), and that it's really annoying when people take out their phone when they're in your company, but I also have to admit that it can be convenient when you need a map, want to make a purchase in advance, want to find information on something, or are killing time away from home.
I'm amazed. I remember when this was just coming out. I remember commercials and wanting it so bad. I remember my friends having one and me wanting it (because we didn't have AT&T). I thought it was so fancy and high tech and top-of-the-line. But looking back from today's standards, it sucks. It's amazing at how this all seemed like yesterday and how much things have changed :|
I don't get what your point is. It was fancy and high tech and top of the line when it came out so yeah like 90% of the modern world wanted one at that time. Whats the big revelation there? Is this just some kids perspective on "oh wow technology advances soooo quickly". Well duh. I guess thats some revelation for you, but uh.. yeah weve all been through that for generations.
The iPhone 5s was going obsolete a year ago. However, I finally messed up it's circuit board, and I upgraded for full app availability again. I'd love to see this as a continued series, and what the minimum iPhone would be now. 6S seems to be the minimum now for apps as iOS 13 is still safe, but iOS 12 isn't.
XLS Gaming yeah but what he meant was by him actually using the appropriate firmware for the phone, or using the earliest firmware to see more surprising results
it is funny how this iPhone had so much room for a headphone jack that many couldn't fit. now apple just removed it even though there was a lot of room on the smaller, less powerful iPhone
I distinctly remember me downloading this video on my trustworthy Galaxy Y, so that I could watch it more often. I dont know what made me like it, but this was one of the most liked videos of me back in the time! The 8 bit guy was the ibook guy then! Good old times!
This just came up in my recommended videos, I remember watching it years ago. Funny seeing it now that you can’t even activate the 2g on any US carrier now, or the 3g for that matter.
In the days of no front facing camera, I remember standing or sitting in front of a mirror so that the person I was video chatting with could see me (in the mirror) while I could see them in the phone's screen.
Oh, the horror! Hahaha, I have been regularly using an iPhone 3GS (not quite as old, but almost) for 4 years now, and it is more than capable of accomplishing any need I have. There is no real purpose to blowing away money on a new smartphone. Hell, my 3GS will probably be better than the latest iPhone since I can still use my headphones :P
Budasteelers1 I said I can still use *my* headphones. You can't use 3rd party headphones on the newest iPhone, you need to buy special headphones exclusively for the iPhone that are incompatible with any other device.
Ben Bluetooth headsets are generally more expensive than wired headphones. Why shouldn't I be able to use my current headphones? Why should I have to buy from Apple or use Bluetooth?
"I can _get by_ with this phone" *_GET BY_* Me: 0.0 . . . dude. I'm the only high school student who probably still has one of those old slide phones, an Ipod Shuffle 4th GEN and a laptop at home. That means: I don't check my email on the go, I don't take pictures left and right, and I don't Imessage everyone And does anyone else find it sad when I say "my Ipod doesn't have internet" I pull out the little square, and someone says, it should have internet...
Adadave7521 Eh, not stupid, you just didn't think of something. Nothing wrong with that. And your original sentiment isn't wrong either, that we all can *get by* without a modern smartphone.
The iPhone 3G in actuality has almost the exact internal hardware as the 2G, the only reason it’s a somewhat better option is that it supports 3G networks over being limited to simply 2G which has since been killed. Either way, the 3GS or 4 is the best choice for a burner phone.
Nah, 3GS/4 is too old and they don't have 3G, maybe get like a 5s, at least that can run iOS 12. Or just get a cheapo Galaxy S4/S5 and custom ROM it. I just got an S5 which will be my burner phone once I get LineageOS on it. I have a 5s but I think the battery is shot and it's iCloud locked.
Wow really? Most people think using the iPhone 5 is a horrible experience, and you think using an original iPhone is somehow "acceptable"? Hell even the "newer" iPhone 4 and 4S are painfully slow (unusable) and pretty much useless by today's smartphone standards... That's the issue with Apple, once their devices are obsolete (usually due to one too many updates being pushed onto the device, which makes the phone painfully slow and unusable), they're basically useless bricks... Texting would be a fail since the vast majority of iPhone users use iMessage. Apps and games would be a fail as well considering your only option is a blackmarket app store with ancient versions of a VERY limited number of apps and games, and even still, performance is horrible... For music, most people these days don't even store music on their devices, they use Pandora or other streaming services, which are absent from either app stores available to this device... So again, another fail... Movies, streaming options are out (which again, the vast majority of people use), so again, another fail... Camera and video, you're not comparing the original iPhone to dumbphones from 7+ years ago, you're comparing it to today's smartphones (or at least smartphones released in the last 2-3 years), you even said so yourself at the beginning of the video... Also, there were plenty of dumbphones and feature phones released long before the iPhone with great cameras, or at least MUCH better cameras than what you get in the original iPhone... So again, it's a fail... That leaves only 3 out of the 9 categories that passed (calls, email and connectivity), the other 6 are all failures... Not to mention, you jailbroke the device, had it been stock, it would have been completely unusable from the very beginning...
***** I have a HTC One M7. I don't experience any lag. Even with a lot of processor intensive games. I plan on upgrading to an S6 next month. The M2 is a budget phone and is no where near the experience you get from a flagship phone. Apple only makes flagship phones that is why Android has much more marketshare. You can't get a new Iphone for less than 600 if you want one new.
I like 8 bit guys editing style. The graphics and sounds are like 90’s quality but not in a bad way. In a nostalgic way. I’m not sure if that’s on purpose considering this is a retro nostalgic tech channel although it’s pretty likely it is, or if that’s just what 8 bit guy is used to and uses editing software with resources he’s always used since those early days. Either way it’s kind of cool. It’d be interesting to see videos recorded, edited, rendered, as well as audio all using older technology. Not too old that the quality is horrible. But very well popular equipment for its time and still can hold up to today’s standards. However far back you’d have to go
In Australia, most large mobile carriers have disabled their 2G networks so you won't be able to send or receive calls and texts here using the iPhone 2G (I'm not so sure about other countries, but you would think that worldwide carriers would disable their 2G networks sometime soon if they haven't already)
Drizzle Animations Yes, and as of 2019, NO 2G exists in Australia. I know this because of my medical appliance that used 2G to telecomm health data to host server. Vodafone was the last 2G service provider and they turned off in recent time. Manufacturer of my device did a no-charge hardware upgrade to 3G hardware.
Oliver Halenius you can rarely find them with os 1 you would have to downgrade your computer from windows ten to windows Xp and it would be super annoying
João, I can guarantee that you can use even the earliest iPhone which can access the Apple store and it won't feel slow. I could also say you can use the original iPhone and it won't feel slow, but that's not a fair comparison because there's not much you can install there.
John Reyes Its called not giving a shit once they have got your money.I want something to come along and blow these greedy fuckers out of the industry.
5:09 ''the slowness factor, like if i was using the browser, was cause by the web browser not by the data connection''. It is the data connection that caused it to be slow. E or EDGE is a step up from GPRS and can reach speeds between 120Kbps to 384Kbps the speed also depends on the network fluctuation usage in the area between users.
I'm an android user. Yet after looking at your video I was impressed with your unbiased treatment of what I consider a problem with technology. A lot of people think of their technology more in terms of social status. You bring it down to earth by reminding the viewer that it is the tools in the toolbox that count. If you can survive on an older version of a phone, and in general use it for most of your daily needs, then the idea of dropping nearly a grand for the latest one is more vanity than practicality. I have in fact seen these earlier iPhone models in use now and then. It always brings back warm memories of my first smartphone. I use my phone for just about everything. So I do feel a sense of nostalgia and definitelybhave memories attached to each one. Great video! Cheers.
I have an iPad 2 and by my standards it is obsolete. Apps crash a lot since ios 8, the camera quality is down right laughable, Safari is a lot slower than it was prior to ios 7, and there is a fuck ton of random bugs like spotlight searching only working half the time and app previews that show what the you were doing in the app two days ago. You were really generous to that phone, I would use a similar device to level my desk...
iOS8 ruined everything? Typical Apple... wanting you to buy a new device. Meh, I guess they're like Microsoft, Nintendo and a whole bunch of other companies.
i have the iPhone 4s that has the same specs on the ipad 2 and its so darn slow apps crash a lot the only reason I bought this phone is because of the price 75 jd its about 80$
@Khoa Tran If you’re talking to Iliketoast, then you might want to think about this for a moment. That comment was posted 5 months ago- that’s late 2018, not 2019. On top of that, they literally stated “last year” (from the perspective of someone living in 2018, of course), meaning that they got the iPod in 2017.
iPhone 2g - collectors item 3g - backup/mess around 3gs - BETTER backup/mess around 4 - backup/minor use 4s - backup/day to day use 5 - backup/ BETTER day to day use 5c - idc 5s - backup/ EVEN BETTER day to day 6/6 + - everything listed 6s/6s + - better, add 3d touch SE - 6s in a 5s body 7 - 6s with no headphone jack, taptic vibration, stereo sound, better camera, water resistant, overall better 7 + - 7 but with dual camera
yep .and it'll lag in about a hundred minutes later . I'm using iphone 4 & samsung S3 .tell you what ?S3 is as lag as a human evolution from a cavemen .even if S3 uses gigs clock speed, big RAM, big battery, and younger age .much younger . IMHO ,in a long term, iPhone is better .
That's so true. My Motorola Moto G outperforms my former iPhone 4S in every way and the current iPhone 5S still uses a dual-core CPU when the Moto G and many other cheaper Android phones use a quad-core chip.
I bought the very first version of iPhone that came out, about 4 months or so after it was released. When I seen the commercial, I said I WILL have one of those!! I still have it!! I also have 2 iPhones 4S's and my iPhone 6S Plus. One of the 4S's has iOS 7 and theother has iOS 6. I refuse to update them to iOS 9. I use them as MP3 players. I've kept them all in cases since I got them, so they are in really good condition. I also have all the boxes (except 1 4S box) they came in and they are in great condition as well. I had a 3G but sold it. I also have an iPod gen 2 and it still works.
Me.And i have it.Actually i have all the iphones generations exept iphone 6.I have Iphone2G,Iphone 3G,Iphone 4s,Iphone 5S and ipad 2 but i dont have iphone 6 :/
Installing whitedoor ruined this test from the start. The whole test was to see if the stock original was obselete or not...installing something that came out later nullifies the entire point of the video...
Do your local providers still support Edge in 2021? I occasionally see my (5G) phone on an Edge data connection when I'm deep in a big concrete structure (it's due to be switched off in June though).
