I have a special guest from Australia and his Filipina wife give me a tour of their squatter's home and compound in Iloilo City, Philippines. See how the families live, work, and share their lives and homes together. I'm proud to be able to bring you such an interesting video. Poverty in the Philippines is everywhere here but the people seem to work through it. It was an honor to be with them. Thanks for the share, that was a real good video and i actually watched it to the end.. I have been in the Philippines now for three years and have seen quite a lot of poverty myself, but the one thing i have always noticed is that people always seem to have a big smile for ya, thanks again, really enjoyed this one... +A Brit In The Philippines Carl Roberts Ya, the Philippine is an amazing place. Most of these people live in conditions that most from my country, America, would not tolerate or be able to stand for a minute and yet filipinos always seem to be able to smile and have a good time.

Well, that´s one of the master keys for happiness. Keeping all things as simple as possible and far away from consumerism and materialism. In my western european country never have seen such friendly smiling people or any kind of hospitality. I´ve been in several squatter areas in the Philippines and found what I was looking for. So I am glad comming back in a few months and stay there. Unfortunately many Pinoys still dreaming the "amercian way of life", don´t realise that in the US also million of people living from 3 Dollar a day or they are working poors. Truth is that thousands of foreigners here would love to change into such simple living

Those seeds from the pod are from the tree ipil (flax) and is also used to de-worm hogs/pigs. We had that in our backyard when I was growing up but I was not aware that it can be consumed by humans. Tapeworms in humans can be the cause of ingesting bacteria or dirt from foods not properly handled or improper handling of foods. Thanks for sharing Mike.

Another Wonderful day Sir Mike being an average Filipino Citizen...Feel Pleased everytime i watch your shared video...Sharing a short Recap of the things showed Sir Mike; at 8:05 is the 'Moringa Tree" or localy called "Malunggay" is a kind of vegetable tree with many uses, from leaves, flowers and the fruit...the juice extracted from the leaf serves as an antiseptic wound remedy...the second one is the bud or the leaf of the Guava Tree possess anti-bacterial and disinfectant properties...at 9:46 the fruit of the Ipil-ipil tree has its medicinal value, the pods and seeds has been eaten to subdue internal pain and a decoction...at 11:35 the 'Tropical Almond or Talisay" as what we call it is very common in many beaches used as shades, the seed can be eaten as a nut...at 12:15 is the "Bilimbi or Kamias" another vegetable tree, the fruit can be use for cooking like Sinigang and Pangat,..12:35 is a Pomelo fruit, belongs to the citrus family, rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene and vitamin B, a source of folic acid...at 14:15 is the "Spanish Pum or Sineguelas/Sarguelas" a famous succulent fruit available during the summer season that contains antioxidants...Thank you once again...

i keep finding your videos. I do think they are better than most videos and are much more interesting than most of the crap on utube about the Philipines which is more about the girls than the people and their lives. I would buy you a beer if you are around in November. My gfriend and I are in Manilla and then are likely to be visiting her sister in Mindoro and then just taking a wander for a week.

+richard none I agree, the people of the Philippine are simply amazing. I am not sure I would say the country is doing well economically. Lots and lots of poverty EVERYWHERE in the Philippines. I stay a lot in Makati Manila and even in that city, considered one of the upscale cities in the Philippines, there is a lot of poverty.

Really love this video! While I would not consider this area a squatters area maybe in that part of the Philippines that is what they call it. That is paradise compared to the squatter areas in Manila. I really love this simple type of life and many more would also love it if they just gave it a chance. As far as the nipa hut issue and someone NOT being able to live in them. That is not true as you mentioned. Many people live in Nipa huts in the Philippines and they can be quite comfortable and roomy. Great video.

young guava leaves are really potent for small wounds/cuts and minor skin abrasions, skin infections etc. It has anti microbial/anti bacterial properties. It works like magic, probably the best topical wound solution. You can apply the fresh extracts directly on wounds or you can boil it then use it to clean infected wounds. It keeps the wound dry and it helps in skin regeneration. Yep 2 days for small cuts thats true.
@vnadal236
@vnadal236 9 лет назад
***** hahaha I don't know if guava leaves is used as vegetable, it taste a little bitter. I'm pretty sure that you can make a guava tea from it. It is good for digestive track cleansing, there are scientific studies on it as well. The fruit, however, is used in sinigang(fish soup).

the comment about the squatter village is interesting. I think many places that might be perceived as squatter are peoples homes in legal areas of residence and not in squatter areas. My almost sister in law and bother in law lived in a house similar to the one you showed which was also the Sunday Church. To me it seemed almost impossible to think they could live there, but they did with their two children. But I do think their is a marked difference in the people in the provinces and in Manila. Even in the poverty. The provinces appear to offer a much better quality of life and even hygiene than the poverty in Manila. Even Cebu which appeared cleaner to me than Manilla. The river is disgusting. I am surprised more people do not get ill.

+My Philippine Journey I live part time in the Philippines and I have lived with my gfs family. Never once had an issue with anything getting stolen. In fact, when I am in the Philippines my filipino friends and family members are more careful with my money and possessions than I am! This idea that everyone in the Philippines is looking to steal from some foreigner is totally ridiculous.

@sackssixthave.8264 8 лет назад
+linda brown Yes, that is what I said in an earlier comment. The squatters areas I have seen in Manila are 1000 times worse than this. I actually do not even consider the people in this video to be in any type of "bad" place. Sure, most of them don't live in nice apartments or condos but they have a pretty decent simple life...like most filipinos like it...even without much money. They have family, friends, a joy for life...and most are much happier than most Americans I know.

I don't think any area is necessarily a squatters area, is it? I mean they live where they live. By that definition, any settler or homesteader in America could have been called a squatter or their neighborhoods.
@stevenhardy2898
@stevenhardy2898 9 лет назад
My wife says your description of squatter area is incorrect. A squatter area would be on an illegal place such as a highway or riverside. The area you are walking thru closely resembles a mobil home park land arrangemet in the usa
@crewcutter2030
@crewcutter2030 8 лет назад
What it really means is you are living on a piece of land that you dont own without permission, if you live and build a house in a land which does not belong to you but with permission from the owner you are called a tenant.
@stevenhardy2898
@stevenhardy2898 8 лет назад
Well,there is a negative connotation to the term...squatter areas are primarily those areas which the Philippine government does not want people to live in,especially for safety. Two prime examples would be along the river bank of the Mindanao river or along the railroad tracks of Manilla. I am sure you have noticed by now that most of the Philippine people are very conservative and reserved about negative connotations about anyone in public or sometimes in the media. Even now,after being with my wife for eight years,there are things she just wont discuss about the Philippines or is deliberately vague about. You are now a part of the media Mike and doing positive things.....keep up the good work. !

Thanks for your reply. It is interesting how we forget people's names... Perhaps it is the same with you, Mike, names are not important: (a) they are given and (b) they are not what leaves an impression. Hope all is well... In reference as to why I asked if you were still in contact with him is that I am wishing to implement a dream I have for people (in particular children) in the Philippines , and, as such, am looking for people who may be interested in either partnering up or kindly giving me advice. While I am here, I'll guess I may as well give you my address should it just happen to interest you, Mike. oneplanetonefamily@gmail.com Stay "frosty," as my father puts it.. Cheers.
