The Mindful Muslim is an Inspirited Minds podcast that hosts raw, open, and honest conversations on various topics within the sphere of mental health, psychology, Islam and spirituality.
In this episode, Sivan spoke to Faisal who is a creative entrepreneur based in Cambridgeshire and has a background in marketing, coaching/mentoring and community development. After being diagnosed with ADHD and dyspraxia in November 2021, he feels that it’s now part of his duty to raise awareness about neurodiversity in the Muslim community and beyond as being undiagnosed for 26 years of life impacted his life, upbringing, education, relationships, spirituality, mental health and career.
Faisal's creativity as an artist has helped him therapeutically throughout life and he likes to show the impact it can have in wider society and his mental health. He continues to implement awareness in society about neurodiversity, most recently helping create the neurodiversity training package and support groups for staff at London Fire Brigade. He also has created social media awareness channels to raise awareness about ADHD which have received a worldwide response - especially from the Muslim community.
A video Faisal created about having ADHD in November went viral, the reaction from the Muslim world showed him the importance of raising awareness about it. He believes that Muslims need to also learn that learning difficulties are different to mental health issues however can exist and can impact them further.
Their discussion explored:
Impacts of ADHD on mental, physical and spiritual well-being and as well as social, educational and work lives
Misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding ADHD and neurodiversity
Navigating life after a late ADHD diagnosis and being able to understand childhood experiences
Regaining confidence and building self-esteem
Managing lifestyles and self-care practices to embrace ADHD
Helping others understand ADHD

I got diagnosed with ADHD at 31. This video made me feel so seen and understood so thank you. I have both inattentive and hyperactive. It’s honestly so exhausting. Trying to pray and be a better Muslim has always been a struggle, I love learning about islam but I can’t for the life of me retain the information. Every day is extremely difficult. I feel like an alien trying to fit in the world, extreme I know lol

Same boat sister! Autism and Adhd here. I get so depressed sometimes because it's hard but Allah is always with us so I keep trying. Neurodivergence needs to be a more talked about topic in the Muslim community. Especially fatwas..too many sheikh don't know what to do with people like us and they just get frustrated

@@ADHDVisualized I live in the Netherlands and refused to get a diagnose or treatment. They feel too comfortable to blame all our symptoms on being a black and brown immigrant..

ASalam wa’alaikum. I don’t usually comment but I felt so strongly I really had to. So it’s a bit of a long one, but SubhanAllah I was hitting a major low and literally just found out recently I may have adhd. I’ve sort of been in denial about it. Thinking nah just another reason you’re giving yourself as to why you’re such a failure. Anyway long story short. I’m 29 now and married with kids and my life’s been taking such a downward hil due to me not knowing I have ADHD. (I think 😩) altho I’m super sure of it after watching this but how I came Across this video is what truly is a miracle. I started looking into ADHD and at the same time askin Allah regularly to help me figure out what’s going on and what to do. I prayed tahhajud and that day around asr time I made such a heartfelt dua about answers and how to get the diagnosis I need to confirm that I have it without paying 1000s of pounds I don’t have or waiting upto 5 years to get it with the NHS. I knew I couldn’t more Forward until I had a diagnosis. So anyway the next day I opened RU-vid and SubhanAllah I just simply wrote “adhd and Muslims” because there’s loads for adhd in general but I wanted it to fit with my way of life which is Islam and this video came up. The more I watched I could have cried. You described my life in one video and it all fell into place and was that missing piece to the puzzle that made sense. Then the best part is you gave that useful information about psychiatry uk and their right to choose nhs referrals and today I’m going to sort it out and take it to my gp. Bi’idnillah. But wow, Allah led me here to my answer through this page and this brother allahuAkbar. I pray Allah puts Baraka in your life and helps you along your journey ameen. Because you surely have helped me along mine. I could have cried. I asked Allah for an answer and I got one. Alhamdulilah ya rab. I also pray for the success of this channel too ameen! 😅 sorry for the long message (oversharing I think is an adhd thing, or so I’ve heard) ASalam wa’alaikum wa rahmatullah wa Barakatu

I have waited ages to get a diagnosis . The thing is is you dont have obvious symptoms they will tell you you dont have it . Poor people that paid for nothing and stimm have to live like that .. That is the problem mostly for women. Women try to hide their adhd all the time . All they done is diagnose me and gave me pillss.. and it was thru nhs ( nhs will do the bare minimum for 2 years of waiting ...) Its better to pay but sis you said its a 1000 pound !!??? Thats alot

Thank you for talking about this. My life has been so difficult, and I thought I was just a horrible human for always hurting around me. But now I love my ADHD brain because Allah made us how we were meant to be. I keep doing my part in educating, and thank you for doing the same.
