This was the first McAlpine album I've listened to... i loved it. Drunk, Running- an incredibly beautiful, lushly orchestrated track about codependency was my favorite. Each other song hooked me in, to various degrees. I loved the chord progressions and instrumentation. Looking forward to listen to Five Seconds Flat and see what all the buzz is about! Thanks for the review!

After having listened to this album multiple times over the last month or so, I’ve found that the impact and even the melodies have definitely improved over time. Anyone who liked her last album “Five Seconds Flat” but found this one a bit underwhelming on first listening, I recommend you give it a second or third chance.

Of course you gave my favorite from the album "Worst song". Personally, I really liked this album, though I thought it got a bit redundant. Laid-back album. Reminded me of Kacey's new album, but not quite at that level.

i really loved this album and this is coming from someone who enjoyed but didn't really love five seconds flat. i do think a lot of firepower was lost with Older and there's nothing that comes close to the greatness of doomsday but in exchnage, Older feels more cohesive and relatable. i just connected with this album in a way i never did with five seconds flat and i guess that's due to the production taking a back seat but in my case the tradeoff might have been worth it.

I loved Five Seconds Flat & it is special, but this is just simply not as good. Anyone mad that people don't like it should be mad at the people involved with creating it not those who dislike it. People can't force themselves to like something.

Lizzy feels like the weakest part of the album to me. I really like most of the instrumentation and production. But I just feel the songwriting isn’t there for most of the album. Many half baked songs imo. And the only song I feel like Lizzy sings with any conviction on is the title track.

Five Seconds Flat has a lot more individual songs I'm likely to return to, but I could actually see myself listening to Older front-to-back more often. The style and production generally worked a little more consistently for me here. I'm not sure I really see the built-for-TikTok aspects you do here, I actually kinda doubt much of this will do big numbers in those spaces, but maybe I'm wrong. It's funny how the Maggie Rogers album dropping in a couple days is ALSO a more folky, organic turn for a musician whose last album was more of a pop variety show. That's very much the sound that's "in" right now for this particular category of semi-mainstream singer-songwriter, I guess.

On first listen I really enjoyed the album but I agree that it felt like she was told "ceilings was a hit, lets try and recreate that 14 times". Also, I don't know if these style of songs are built for Tik-Tok but the run times certainly scream that (14 tracks, 45 minutes).

I honestly agree with you more than I disagree with you, but this is one of the times I do disagree with you because I really fucking loved this album. “OLDER” is more successful than it isn’t. While it certainly isn’t as explosive as some of the best moments on five seconds flat, I feel like while that album showcased Lizzy’s vocal ability and ear for musicality as a whole, OLDER is a showcase for Lizzy’s lyricism (and also her vocal ability). While I can hear SOME potential label fuckery here, I also do feel like this is the album Lizzy wanted to make. Pretty solid 9.5, pushing a 10 for me, but that’s just me

i don't know how contentious your sentiments towards the record will be on the large, but all I can say is that this album was, so far this year, the most boring record I went through, mainly because I wanted it to work so bad but it was boring me to the point of frustration that I didn't even finished the last two or three songs (i don't remember- it felt like the record did not want to end.) For what type of music its trying to be- the lowkey, more quiet brand of acoustic and piano pop- it is way too fucking long and too milquetoast. Whoever pushed her to this direction: why. And in a year with so much good folk and acoustic-adjacent records to the point of ridiculousness, McAlpine having middle of the road is frustrating

Agree with you on Broken Glass. I had a crush on Lizzy McAlpine but her music's not for me! This album is a 2/10. Did not make her music better.

Making a criticism based on your own or others' supposed expectations is just an exercise in narcissism and arrogance. This dude is a very good example. "Older" is an awesome album, absolutely Macalpine at it's finest and a step beyond in her own growth as the impecable songwriter and performer that she is. Every song Lizzy delivers is not to be necesarily understood but rather to be feeled and this album is full of emotion from her very inner soul. I was also surprised at first listen, but the thing is that you have to listen to it over and over again and inevitably you become involved in the mood of the album, which is absolutely intimate, as if Lizzy were practically telling you her story in your ear. And the production is the key, as always very meticulous and full of the atmospheric and technical details to which we are already accustomed in her previous work. But you have to listen very carefully and with an absolutely open heart to feel the true beauty of this magnificent album. Lizzy is a true artist devoted to her own needs of expression, not to the expectations of fans or critics, and that's a huge plus in today's world full of fake'n'famous pseudo artists.
