In this video, we look at the elegant and refined Scarlet Sunrise Jian by LK Chen. It is based on the design of Jian found in the Jin Dynasty (266-420 AD) just after the fall of the Han Dyansty. It also represents the end of the first Jian era, when the Dao took over the battlefield. It wouldn't be for another 1000 years that the Jian would again appear on the battlefield in the Song Dynasty. This sword is extremely light and hosts a number of ornate decorations and fittings, the Chi-Long (Hornless Dragon) on the belt slide, the bird on the guard, and the Tao-Tie on the pommel and chape. There are two versions of this sword available, the original long jian, and the compact jian which is the length of modern martial arts jian.

What a great overview Sifu! I certainly appreciated the in depth review of the context on which this Jian was developed, and love the idioms that persist from the z Jin dynasty. Was not aware of that more compact version but that is a very neat option to have available! I only have experience with the longer one, and was fully prepared to not be happy with it and rank it lower in my Jian hierarchy: boy was I surprised. The Scarlet Sunrise handles as pleasantly as it is well built! It really is a lot of fun to cut with, and it’s light weight makes it a very approachable sword. For completeness sake I’ll like my video which covers my discussion of the Scarlet Sunrise as well, but everyone should keep expectations low after this great overview ;-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NJczsLx4caw.html

I got the compact version of this sword. I like it a lot. The only thing I wish was that the handle was a bit more... ergonomic? And a little inlet/spot in the pommel for a tassel to be tied on, even though it isn't usually a Tang dynasty style.

I know exactly what you mean, the handle is very simple and I feel a lot of extra play when I hold it in my hand. However, the compact version is an absolute treat to work with, who knew a sword could be so nimble!

@@SifuKuttel Indeed! I'm actually considering between getting the longer version and getting the Flying Phoenix.

I can easily see someone duel wielding those two the long and normal much like how Miyamoto described with a long and normal katana in the book of five rings.

hello! Thanks for the overview! It's possible to apply the tassel decoration?
@SifuKuttel

The only way would be to tie the tassel around the handle of the sword. There are no rings or holes to put the tassel through.

Hmmmm. Similar dimensions to the Soaring Sky 8-sided Han Jian (which I have). How does the weight and balance of it compare to the standard longer version of the Scarlet Sunrise Jian? We're about the same size, but I may have slightly longer reach. I'm 6'1" but have arms designed for someone 6'3" which makes it impossible to buy off-the-rack shirts or jackets. But it's usually been a bonus in martial arts for me.

They are quite similar in length and width, with the Soaring Sky being slightly longer (handle and blade) but the Scarlet Sunrise is noticeably lighter. I thought it was going to be a much bigger difference between the two, so I was actually surprised to see them side-by-side. I can only imagine the pain in finding shirts and jackets, I have a hard enough time as it is for me and I'm not too far from the typical sizes 😅

how do you compare this, in term of handling, to lk's han jian offers? I have all the han jian options they offer, flying phonenix was the most lively I find, and white arc is more of saberish handling, not sure where this one lands
@SifuKuttel
@SifuKuttel Год назад
This seems a bit more lively than the Flying Phoenix, but the handle lacks shape which the Phoenix has making for a comfortable, and supported grip.

Can it used in battle formation?
@SifuKuttel
@SifuKuttel Год назад
It is quite a thin blade which would run into issues against more robust weapons and armor on the battlefield. It was more commonly carried by officials and the wealthy and if used was most likely in a dueling/plain clothes context. I mean, you could take it out on the battlefield, but no guarantees for how long it would last. 😅

I'm working on it! I can tell you now it is massive. The handle alone can fit six hands!
