In the late 17th century, Llanvihangel Court was home to a man on a mission. The vehemently (indeed, feverishly) anti-Catholic John Arnold became the chief proponent of the Popish Plot in Monmouthshire. Was his desire to hunt down priests borne out of a sense of religious duty or did he have his eye on political advancement? Either way, tragedy was to follow treachery.
We also have a quick look at the legends surrounding the Skirrid and its eponymous inn, and learn about the early 20th century owner of the Court, Mrs Attwood-Mathews, who had a keen eye for Egyptian curios and rather radical thoughts about home improvements.
P.S. We were fumbling for the former name of the Skirrid Mountain Inn - It was originally called 'Millbrook' and in 1110 a trial is recorded having taken place there.

I know you are usually both light-hearted but I thought the account of the execution of Father David Lewis was quite moving. I'd heard of him but had never heard of John Arnold. I should have done as he was clearly a hugely important figure of his day in Monmouthshire - a bit of a religious version of a Witchfinder General (who also mostly acted within the legal parameters of the time, too!). He probably saw priests under the bed at every turn.

Hi, Larry! Yes, I was very saddened by the story of Fr. David Lewis. As a child in Bettws, Newport my primary school (Millbrook) was next door to the Catholic St. David Lewis Primary School (now Ysgol Gymraeg Ifor Hael). The church that my Aunty Esther attended, who was Catholic, was the St. David Lewis RC Church. It was only in this programme that I learnt who St. David Lewis was - it took me sixty years to find it out! The history in this area of the of the Civil War and the Restoration is, like much of our local history, something seldom told. One of my joys in doing this programme is finding out the fruits of Mr. Busby's research along with the viewer. Goff.

All hail Lord Newport of Chepstow! What a superb title, albeit a fake one. Very interesting in John Arnold. I wonder what the local aristocrats thought of him? You suggest that the Herberts were not fans, and the Duke of Beaufort loathed him. What about the others?

Certainly in 1678-9 he was shown support by the Bishop of Llandaff, by William Morgan of Tredegar and - somewhat strangely - by Charles, son of the Marquess of Worcester (Worcester was created 1st Duke of Beaufort in 1682 and was the arch-enemy of Arnold). As Arnold's behaviour got wilder and more unpredictable (he would assault strangers in public and accuse them of being 'papists') then this support melted away. He still managed to be elected MP for both Monmouth and Southwark in 1689 and again for Monmouth in 1695, so although apparently unpopular with the public he must have retained some establishment support.

Devil wearing an apron... LOL... lightning strike or otherwise that created the gap in that mountain - it would have been an incredibly massive landslide. Hopefully there weren't any people in the vicinity. Heartbreaking story about David Lewis - 50 pounds to catch a priest - this also happened in the American colonies in a way.. native Americans and Loyalists were paid for scalps of American rebel patriots.. many of my ancestors died that way in New York. neighbor against neighbor... what a scary time it must have been not feeling safe in your own neighborhood.
