This is exceptionally good. Thank you for producing a video about this rarely-discussed period of our history.

@@garethbryneithin It's nice they're putting that out. I wish they hadn't glossed over of the reasons for Edward's war against Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (because he didn't come to his coronation? Really?) and used Robert of Rhuddlan's motte at Aber as the site of the Llys instead of Pen y Bryn. But ah well. It's still in dispute.

@@SarahWoodburyBooks I have visited Pen-y-Bryn and found the research of Mrs Gibson (previous owner) as to its importance very convincing.

An interesting comment there about not having to defend against their own people, really struck out at me. I have been pondering about old mottes with no baileys and have come to a theory that they didnt actually need a bailey if the castle was Welsh, as the land is the support unit. The Normans had to bring their own support units and keep them defended in the baileys.

Interesting what you say about the English destroying sheaths and incorporating them into the new polity. I live in Norfolk, not far from from Castle Rising. Castle Rising is only a small castle, not much more than a keep on a motte and bailey plan. But when the curtain wall was built, the local village church was actually BURIED in it, presumably to be replaced by a new church within the grounds of the castle. So presumably the new church was firmly under the thumb of William de Warenne, William the Bastard's butler. Talk about oppression of the locals!

Yes, the Saxons definitely experienced that too!
