First the new P2 and now the Black 5: Hornby at its best. Hornby's Black 5 has always been a top model, and this iteration is contuinig the fine tradition. It'll be interesting to see how the new, innovative drawbar mechanism stands the test of time. The LMS Black lined livery is not only iconic but gorgeous. Your review style has developed quickly, and you now have an established methodology and approach. This is excellent infortainment. Do you ever see yourself having an "mechanism investgation" segment, where you open up the model? Nice to see Hornby including crew again. Your "Hill of Dispare" is on a par with Jenny Kirk's "Torture Track"! Thanks for an excellent video.
@Proper_Chuffed

Right? It really does feel like they’ve stepped up to the plate of late. I think they catch a LOT of flak in general, but a loco like this proves why they’re still regarded as one of the best. Thanks for the feedback Stephen, an interesting thought about the mechanical aspect, is that something you would like to see? I must admit, I would be very nervous about cracking open new locos. But if there was a want for it c I would be happy to look into doing that. Haha yes, it’s a great piece of track, and a real good test, I built the layout with reviews in mind and I’m glad it’s showing its colours. 👍 Cheers Stephen, have a great weekend sir!

@Proper_Chuffed I know what you mean about taking new, expensive, highly detailed and therfore quite fragile locos apart. I wanted to change the headcode characters on my new Accurascale class 37 (yes, another one!), but chickened out, as I would've had to remove the body. Perhaps you could ask the rest of your viewers and see what feedback you get?

@stephendavies6949
@stephendavies6949 3 месяца назад
@Proper_Chuffed Yes. It's always interesting to see what makes locos tick. SamsTrains does it very well, for example. The mechanism is the key element of good running and longevity. But perhaps not everyone wants to see whether a loco has a flywheel, wiper pickups, separate wheel bearings and a 3 pole, 5 pole or cordless motor. It could be a bit niche.

Ho hum, sadly the sort of thing we have come to expect from Hornby. They have developed the habit of depicting anything brass as shining like 24ct gold and what's with the white axle ends - I doubt they looked anything like that when built or at least not for very long!

I haven't got a Black Five and it is a really wonderful looking loco. I will deffo be getting an early emblem BR one to weather to within an inch of its life when I finally finish my stupid electrics and track which is driving me loopy atm. The whole packaging setup seems to be a good step up for Hornby (to match Accurascale/Rapido etc I spoze). My incline is planned for 3% (I have the WWS incline set) but I'm a little dubious about some locos being able to pull stuff up it... Anyway, it looks fantastic on a long freight and doesn't seem too expensive, really... Cheers for a good video, Hylton :)

The two gold-painted pieces in the baggie are steam blowdown pipes for the bottom of the steam chest. Presumably, there are some pre-drilled holes on the bottom side of the cylinders to glue these in. The other bits might be replacement plugs for the forward NEM coupling if you want the plow instead; just my guess.

It's a bit bewildering to me that Hornby doesn't use the new style of packaging on all releases now, regardless of if they are new tooled or just a re-release. Any other company I can think of (at least in the US) would put it in the new packaging if it is released after the redesign. Not to mention the fact that the new packaging is better for the model than the previous style.

Anyone considering buying one of these should check out Sam’s Trains video review of the same loco. Things did NOT go well…be warned. Electrical connections from Tender to loco badly failed; glue marks on body; plastic boiler instead of die cast (really cheap approach considering the high loco price); metal running board warped; removeable lamps…didn’t see to want to be removed; loose crank on drive wheels, etc. Detail was good for sure…but given its high price, not a good value purchase, and very lightweight.

@Proper_Chuffed but 0.61 still doesn't convert to the measurement you recorded.

True. So in fact, it’s 0.63 on the website, which is 285 grams, so the model is in fact heavier than indicated 🤔

They have missed the front steps off.
@davidstrains4910
@davidstrains4910 3 месяца назад
The front footsteps are not missing, they are included in the extra detail pack to be fitted by the end user depending on the sort of layout they have, it’s standard procedure with UK steam locomotives if they have front footsteps they won’t be fitted from the factory because we use tighter curves which if those footsteps are fitted can cause the front bogies to not have enough movement to get round those tighter curves.

It is. I can’t really comment on Sam’s, but I am rather grateful mine seemed so faultless. I think when reviewing, it’s always a sample size of one right? Mine was great, his, not so much. I can only give you honest impressions of the one I have 👍

It does seem so 🤔 I would be really unhappy getting something in that condition, I hope he can get it swapped out, that would leave a really bitter taste in my mouth.

Hi, Thanks for this positive review. But I have mixed feelings after viewing "Sam's Train" review of this new Black Five from Hornby. Guess you are lucky to have a perfect RTR and neat model. In the past I experienced faulty Hornby products due to the NON existence of Quality Control where these models are produced: China. Not only true with model trains ! To many times Ready to Run was "Ready to Repair". And with the new prices of over 200£ I'm not willing to repair faulty nor badly assembled products. Another observation is that the TXS decoder is not chuff to wheel rotation synchronized. A minor detail ... but still. There seems a lack of consistency with Hornby steam locomotives. Some have the die cast boilers like the new 2MT; this one is plastic. Looking at Accurascale locomotives, per example, that have all the modern quality features for a far more 'democratic price' Hornby runs behind and is way overpriced. But no wonder that companies controlled by book keepers and share holders can't stand up to smaller and thus more flexible companies. Still all in all - don't get me wrong: I love Hornby products and have a nice roster of fine Hornby steamers but I advocate they get their act together starting with efficient QC and more reasonable prices. Success and thanks for your model railroad enthousiasme !

Hello Phil. Thank you for watching, I totally understand where you are coming from on this and a few other people have shared that sentiment with me. All I can say is what you see in my video, mine was without a hiccup thankfully. It really is a case of quality control more than anything at the end of the day, the product is beautiful, genuinely, in person I am smitten with the darn thing, but with running like Sam had, that's not cricket. Lets hope its a bit of a wake up for them, they are still close to many modellers hearts no doubt and it would be a shame to see them really fall off. Thanks for watching again, Hylt

I do think his comments on value for money compared with the Accurascale GW Manor model are very valid, regardless of how well turned out this actual example of the model is. Hornby should be taking note and aiming for similar, even if their pricing has to be a little higher. Just my opinion of course.

Yes his was faulty. Some others have had problems - I wonder if there is a faulty batch? The detail is excelkent though. Hopefully the problems are few and far between.
